This invention relates to improvements in utility drawers for stoves rand more particularly to the construction of a drawer disposed beneath the burners in gas or other types of cooking ranges.

I'Vhile the. invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail 'the preferred embodiment, but it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend-to limit the invention tothe specific form disclosed, but intend to Cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and s cope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

In the drawings the invention is illustrated in a gas range construction having the usual base frame 6 mounted on legs 7 and supporting at one end an oven structure 8 whose front Surface may be completely enameled and which projects downwardly over a portion of the base frame'so as to conceal the same. Mounted above the opposite end of the base frame isa framework 9 in which the open burners ofthe range are disposed.

Beneath the"burners and adjacent the oven structure is a` horizontal and forwardly opening compartment in which the improved drawer is mounted. This compartment is de fined by the said wall 10 of the oven, side, rear and bottom walls 11, 12 and 13 secured to the base frame 6, and a top wall formed by the vremovable drip pan 14 which is dis posed,'beneath the burners.

In -the present instance the vdrawer is formed of sheet metal with side walls 15, a bottom wall 16, a rear wall 17 and a front wall 18. Horizontal ledges 19 overlie the sides of the drawer and are secured to the side walls of the drawer compartment. The front wall 18 is substantially larger in area than the cross section of the drawer, the upper edge extending above and concealing the drip pan 14. Thel lower edge projects beyond the bottom of the drawer so as to form a flange 20 which overlaps the base frame 6 and terminates substantially at the same level as the lower edge of the front surface' receptacle mounted for bodily movement outy wardly through a rectangular opening 21 in the front wall of the drawer so asto be accessible withoutnecessitating withdrawal of the drawer. lThis compartment is defined in part by a substantially -iat closure plate 22 conforming to the shape of but substantially larger than the opening 21 and having a convex outer surface, the curved peripheral I,edge of which abuts against the front lwall 18 'of the drawer so as to constitute the plate a beveled panel for the wall. Secured to the rear side of the closure plate 22 is a sheet metal member 25 defining the "rear side and bottom walls of the auxiliary receptacle,.the front wall being formed by the closure plate. The vertical and lateral dimensions ofthe member 25 are smaller than those of the opening 21 which permits the receptacle 'to be tipped forwardly through the opening from its normally concealed position, as shown-in Fig. 2, into the open position shown in Fig. 3. If desired, the auxiliary receptacle may be partitioned as shown'in Fig. 5 so that the utensils, such as small condiment cans, will be maintained in upright position. Preferably, the rear wall of the auxiliary receptacle has a projecion 26 against which the rear surface of the plate 18 acts as a stop to limit the 'forward tipping movement of the receptacle to the position shown in Fig. 8, in which position the recep` tacle is maintained by the weight of its contents which acts forwardly of the hinge axis. vWhen the receptacle is positioned as in Fig.

, 2 its weight acts rearwardly of lthe hinge axis, thereby maintaining the receptacle closed.'

`When itis desired to open the auxiliary receptacle downward pressure is applied'to the handle 24 which tips the plate'22 forwardly into the position shown in Fig. v3.

To withdraw the slidable .drawer without opening the auxiliary receptacle an upward force is applied to the handle at the same time as the drawer is slid forwardly.

I claim-as my invention: i A 1. In a cooking range providing` ai horizontal forwardly opening compartment, the

combination of a drawer slidably mounted in said compartment andwithdrawablel therefrom, said drawer having a front wall with anl opening therein, and a member for closing said opening hinged to said wall and swingable forwardly therefrom to afford ac cess to the interior of the drawer while the draweris in closed position.
