Description

T. K. MARLOW METALLIC TIE Filed March 21, 1930 Inventor flamslzllwiow Patented Oct. '21, 1930 METALLIC TIE Application filed March 21, 1930. Serial No. 437,864. I
This improvements in metallic ties and more particularly to devices of this character which are especially adapted for use in constructing mine railways, but it is to be understood that a tie in accordance with this invention may be utilized for constructing standard railroads if desired v The primary object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a metallic tie of the aforementioned character embodying a construction and rail fastening means whereby the'liability'of same slipping either longitudinally of laterally will a be reduced to a minimum.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a metallic tie of the character set forth which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eflicient in its use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
jects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a study of the following specification, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein I t Figure 1 is a View in top plan showing a pair of metallic ties constructed in accordance with this invention mounted beneath a pair of rails.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 2,2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 isa fragmentary View in longitudinal sectionvtaken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will beseen that the reference numeral 1 designates the body portion of the tie from the opposite ends of which project the integral diverging arms 2 upon which the rails 3 are mounted. As clearly 'illustratedin Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the marginaledges of the body portion 1 and diverging arms 2 invention relates to new and useful and prevent longitudinal or All of the foregoing and still further obas well as the free ends of said arms are provided with integral down turned flanges 4 which are adapted to bite into the road bed ment of the tie.
Secured to the inner portions of the arms 2 inwardly of the rails 3 are the cleats 5 which constitute braces for said arms 2,
Metallic clamps 6 are detachably secured on opposite sides of the rails 3 on the arms 2 and are provided with longitudinally olfset clamping jaws 7 which engage on the base of the adjacent rail. The bolts by means of which the clamps 6 are secured to the arms 2 are designated by the reference. numeral 8. If desired, the innerclamp only may be removable and the outer clamp may be permanently secured to the arms through'the medium of rivets 9 at the time the ties are manufactured'.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a metallic tie which will retain its position on the road bed and also with respect to the rails. The diverging arms 2 provide dual supporting surfaces for the rails on each tie and consequently said ties may be spaced a lateral move- I much greater distance apart than is the prac- I tice with ties of a construction in widespread use at present.
Itis believed that the many advantages of a metallic tie constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and
although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated, and described, it is to be understood that changes. in thedetails off-construction may be had which will fall withinthe scope of the invention as claimed. 7 v I What is claimed is I A metallictie of the character described comprising a fiat intermediate body portion,
integral, flat, diverging arms extending from the opposite ends of the body portion, integral down turned flanges on the longitudinal edges of the body portion and the arms and on the free ends of the arms, bracing cleats secured transversel to the inner por tion of the arms, a clamp permanently mounted on each of said arms adjacent its outer end, a clamp removably mounted on each of said arms inwardly of the stationary clamp and in opposed relation thereto, said stationary and removable clamps constituting means for securing a. rail to the arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
