This invention relates to loose leaf binders.

Objects of this invention are to provide a loose leaf binder in which the cover and l back are equipped with members, one of which carries posts adapted to be projected through the sheets and to provide a slide or locking means carried by the other of said members .adapted to lock the free ends of the posts in position.

Further objects are to provide a binder in which the parts are non-removable and cannot become lost, and in which the locking of the posts may be most easily effected in a simple and rapid manner with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator.

Further objects are to provide a loose leafl binder in which auxiliary flaps are carried adjacent the rear edge ofthe covers, one of 2 these flaps being provided with a plurality of posts which are adjustable and equipped with heads, the other of such flaps being provided with marginally opening latches adapted to receive such heads by-a sliding motion w and to thereafter lock such heads securely in position.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen o that the binder is provided with a back 1 which is joined to a pair of covers 2. The back is composed of a pair of flexible members which are secured together and Iwhich continue over the inner and outer faces of the 5 covers to form an enclosing covering therefor. Preferably these portions are extended to provide flaps 3 and 4 which project outwardly from the back and are positioned between the covers when the binder is closed. 5o The flaps 3 and 4 enclose respectively a sheath 1925. 5 and a metal strip 6, as shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3. This sheath is preferably made by a longitudinally folded metal strip, as illustrated in the drawing. y

The strip 6 rigidly carries a plurality of posts 7, suchposts being secured to the sheath in any suitable manner. For instance, as shown in Figure 3,the posts may be provided with flanges 8 and with`headed portions 9' which grip a portion of the strip. These posts are each provided with a telescopic member 9 which is in turn provided with a head 10 formed by constricting the portion of such post adjacent the head, as shown in Figure 3. Preferably, the members 9 are externally threaded and cooperate with the internally threaded hollow portion of the post 7 as shown in Figure 2, to thus permit adjustment of the length of the post. Preferably one or more auxiliary posts 11 are provided intermediate the posts 7 to relieve such latter posts of some of the strain due to the leaves 12 and also to provide additional points of attachment for the leaves. The sheath 5 is provided with a plurality of slits 13 which extend transversely across its bottom sides and open through its marginal edge, as most clearly shown in Figure 1. These slots are adapted to permit the passage therethrough of the heads 10 of the posts. A slide 14 is positioned within the sheath 5 and is provided with a manipulating portion 15 projecting from one end of the sheath 5. This slide is provided with a slot 16 which cooperates with a pin 17 to retain the slide in position within the sheath while permitting a limited motion. The slide 14 is provided with right angle slots, as shown in Figurev1, which are each composed of a transversely extending relatively large portion 18 and with a longitudinally extending constricted portion 19. The portion 18 of the slots is adapted to. align with the slots 13 formed in the sheath 5 when the slide is in one extreme position, and to permit the en- 95 try of the heads 1() of the posts. Thereafter, the slide 14 is moved longitudinally of the casing 5 and the portions 19 of the slots engage below the heads 10 of the posts and receive the constricted portions of such posts. 100

An auxiliary strap-lilre member 20, (see Figure 2) is provided which is equipped With thimbles 2l adapted to slide over the post to facilitate positioning and reinovai of the sheets.. vvWhen the binder is opened, the requisite number et sheets may be held upon the thiinbles 2l and such sheets, and thimbles.l and plate may be bodily removed, thus retaining the removed sheets in alignment and facilitating their repositioning.

In using the binder, the sheets are positioned as desired and, thereafter, the bach is rocked into the position shown in Figure 3., It is a simple matter to slide the sheath 5 laterally across the heads ot the posts 17 With such heads positioned Within the slots 13. This is a very simple operation and does not require bodily lifting oi the sheath 5 upwardly and then positioning such sheath by 'a downward motion. lnstead, the sheath is slid laterally, as stated, and the headed ends of the posts slid into position. Preferably the sheatl 5 is provided with upwardly struclt recessed portions 23 to receive the heads ot the posts. Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to he understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.,
