I Application led April 19, 1827. Serial No. 184,927.
This invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to a combination lamp and smokers stand.
One object of this invention is to provide an article of furniture of the above nature 1n which the smokers stand is provided with a cigar lighter operated from current supplied by the same conductor which supplies current to the lamp.
0 A further object is to provide an article of furniture of the above nature which is convertible into a smokers stand.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above nature which 5 will be simple in construction, inexpenslve to manufacture, easy to manipulate, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there 0 has been illustrated on the accompanying drawings two forms in whichthe invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Fig. 1 represents a side view partly in section of the device as it appears when converted into a smokers stand.
Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section and on a reduced scale of the complete combination lamp and smokers stand.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the shelf of the 0 smokers stand.
Fig. 4 is a diagram of the electrical connections.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modied form of insulating member adapted to be located in the ornamental base. l
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral indicates the ornamental base of the device, said base being preferably made conical in shape, as shown in Fig. 1. The base 10 is provided with a bushing 11 through which passes a conducting cord 12 leadin to a house lighting wall outlet, not shown. he cord 12 comprises a pair of supply conductors 13 and 14 connected by binding screws 15 and 16 to an insulating member 17 located under the ornamental conical base 10. The insulatin member 17 has a reduced upper neck 18 tted within the apex of said comcal base 10, and is provided at its center with a vertical passage 19, the upper end of which is threaded to receive the lower threaded end of a tube 20. The upper end of the tube 20 is also threaded at 21 and is adapted to engage a lower threaded depending neck 22 of a circular shelf 23, said shelf 23 being adapted to support any desired smokers articles, such as a -pair of ash trays 24 and 25 and a cigar lighter 26.
The shelf 23 is provided with a raised rim 27 to prevent the articles from sliding 0E, and the periphery of said shelf has a key-hole slot 28 to provide a support for the cigar lighter 26. The cigar lighter 26 is connected by a conductor cord 29 to a plug member 30 adapted to be inserted in either of a pair of twin sockets 31 and 32 of a double receptacle 33. The receptacle 33 is of standard rec-J tangular shape and is adapted to be located in a similar shaped recess in the shelf 23. The receptacle 33 has a flange 34 located underneath said shelf 23 and below said flange is a depending body member 35.
The flange 34 and the body member 35 are housed within a casing 36 having a side bushing 37 through which a pair of electric conductor cords 38 and 39 are adapted to pass into said receptacle 33. The conductor cords 38 and 39 also pass through a bushing 40 in the neck 22 and then down through the tube 20 into the hollow conical base 10, where they are connected to the supply conductors 13 and 14 by the binding screws 15 and 16.
The top of the shelf 23 is provided with an ornamental neck 41 internally threaded for interchangeably receiving the lower thread- 4ed end of a handle member 42 (see Fig. 1)
or the lower threaded end of a lamp supporting tube 43 (see Fig. 2). Mounted upon the top of the tube 43 is an ornamental section 44 and a laterally extending hollow bridge arm 45, from which is pivotally supported a lamp 46 having a shade 47. Current is supplied to the lamp 46 by a pair of conductors 48 and 49 of smaller gauge than the conductors 39 and 40, said conductors 48 and 49 passing down through the tube 43 and the tube 20 and being connected to the supply conductors 13 and 14 by the binding screws 15 and 16 of the insulating member 17.
In operation, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig.` 1, thedevice may be used solely as a smokers stand. It will beunderstood, however, that if desired, one `or both of the sockets 31 and 32 may be employed for supplying current to electric heaters, vacuum cleaners, radio sets, or any other power consuming appliances other than a cigar lighter. l
When it is desired to convert the device into a combination lamp and smokers stand, it will only be necessary to unscrew the handle 42 from the neck 41 and replace it with the lamp supporting tube- 43.
The modified form of insulating base mem` ber 50 shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and a cup-shaped cover 51 is provided to avoid the possibility of short circuits.
The cover 51 is provided with a central aperture 52 for admitting the two-wire conductor cord 12, and said cover member is detachably connected to the body member 17 by means of a pair of oppositely disposed screws 53, said screws being located at 90 degrees from the position o f the binding screws 15 and 16.
One advantage of the present invention is that when the conductor cord 12 connecting the base with the wall outlet becomes worn, it may be easily replaced without changing the other wires leading to the power consuming units and lamp and without the .necessity of soldering, taping, or splicing wires.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In an article of furniture, a hollow standard'adapted to rest upon the floor, a shelf mounted 011 said standard and having a slot, an electric socket depending from said shelf, a ci ar lighter carried by said shelf and detac ably mounted in said slot, and a pair of conductors connected to said socket and passing down through said standard, and means in the base of said standard for connecting said conductorsto a source of current.
2. In an article of furniture, a hollow standard adapted to rest upon the floor, a
shelf mounted on said standard and having a slot, an electric socket depending from said shelf, a cigar lighter carried by said shelf and detachably mounted in said slot, a pair of conductors connected to said socket and passing down through said standard, and means in' the base of said standard for connecting said conductors to a source of current, said socket having a fiange located under said shelf.
