COMBINED COAL QR CLINKER TONGS AND STOVE LID LIFTER Filed July 5, 1929 72.212102)! frailty Jsqpb fio n an/llicnkmsl'i I Patented Oct. 14, 1930 PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH EDWARD WTSNIEWSKI AND'ANTONI BRZYKCY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA COMBINED COAL OR CLINKER TONGS AND STOVE-LID LIFTER Application filed July 5, 1929. Serial No. 376,167.
Our invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly efficient combined coal or clinker tongs and stove lid lifter.
To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim. I I
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a pair of coal tongs constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
F igs. 3, 4, and '5 are transverse sections taken on the lines 33, l4: and 5-5 of Fig. 2,17espectively; and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a pair of clinker tongs constructed in. accordance with the invention.
' Referring first to the coal tongs shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the numeral 7 indicates'a pair of legs each formed from a channel bar. The side flanges of the legs 7 are turned toward each other and at one 'of their ends the side flanges of one of said legs are fitted between the side flanges -of theother leg, overlapped therewith and pivotally connected thereto by a hinge pin 8 which extends through alined holes in said side flanges. These overlappedportions of the side flanges of the legs 7 hold said legs against lateral angular movements in respect to each other. A pair of concavoconvex co-operatin'g rosettes 9 are rigidly secured by spot welding or otherwise to the legs 7 at their outer or free ends with the concave sides thereof turned toward each other. By reference to. Fig. 1, it will be noted that the rosettes 9 are circumferentially adjusted in respect to each other so that the peripheral prongs of one of said rosettes extend between the prongs of the other rosette when the tongs are closed to facilitate the gripping action thereof. The side flanges of the legs 7 in the vicinity of the hinge pin 8, at their outer longitudinal edge portions, are rolled inwardly toward each other, as best shown in Fig. 4
. the lid lifter 11 to receive a hook or other support for hanging the tongs thereon.
To operate the tongs, the legs 7 are gripped just forward of the hinge pin 8 and around the side flanges thereof where rolled at 10. The purpose of thus rolling the side flanges at 10 is to prevent the same from pinching the operators hand when closing the tongs. In case the operators hand is caught between the side flanges of the legs 7 the rolled section 10 thereof will force the hand from therebetween without pinching the same. As shown, these rolled edges 10 extend only a relatively short distance but if desired they may be extended the full length of the legs 7. Referring now to the clinker tongs shown in Fig. 6 the same is identical with the coal tongs shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, and like parts have the same reference numerals with the exception of the legs which are indicated by the numeral 13. These legs 13 are considerably longer than the legs 7 and their outer or free end portions are curved forwardly and downwardly so that the rosettes 9 extend substantially edgewise in the plane of the opening and closing movements of said legs. These curved end portions of the clinker tongs facilitate the insertion thereof through a furnace door opening for the purpose of removing a clinker from the fire pot.
What we claim is:
A device of the class described compris ing a pair of channel legs pivotally connected at one of their ends with their side flanges turned toward each other, the outer longitudinal edge portions of the side flanges of each leg, in the vicinity of the pivotal connection of said legs, being rolled inwardly toward each other.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
JOSEPH EDWARD WISNIEWSKI. ANTONI BRZYKCY.
