Description
Sept. 9, 1930. H, OSTRQWER 1,775,137
BUCKLE Filed Nov. 22, 1929 dum/Mg Patented Sept. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES ra'rleu'r OFFICE HARRY OSTROWER, 0F' BROOKLYN, NEW YORK BUCKLE Application inea November 22, 1929. serial No. 409,084.
The subject-matter of the present invention relates to buckles and the improvements are directed to a novel and unique form or" fastener whereby the free end or" a belt, or the like, is engaged with a loop arrangement directly forming a part of the buckle itself.
Those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains are aware that various forms of structures have been improvised whereby one end of a belt may be attached tol a buckle, the other end, or free end, of said belt, being engaged by the buckle and linally passed through a loop to maintain the saine in a flat condition against a contiguous portion of the belt. In the past it has been cus tomary to form this loop of leather, of the like 'andsuitably secured the same to a portion of the belt.
In the invention about to be disclosed in detail it is 3ro osed to rovide a loo for the Y p .p 2 purpose aforesaid, said loop becoming sub-V stantially a part of the buckle and the clamping means whereby the belt-strap is secured in position. Hence, my improved buckle will comprise the buckle proper, the clamping means, also carrying said buckle, and .finally a loop arrangement; all combining to form a unitary structure which requires but the addition of the leather belt for subsequent of fering to the public as a iinished article.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a buckle of the above-mentioned character which embodies a loop arrangement, either formed separately, or inclamping means and able material.
As will presently appear, the arrangement is exceedingly simple, neat in appearance and in view of easy assemblage may be oiered to the public at a low price, thus assuring its commercial success.
l/Vith these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement oil parts, all as will be described more fully hereinai'ter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In said drawings:
Lformed from a single .As clearly shown tnred, as indicated at 21 and nally of the parts shown in F ig. 1 to depict clamping means and the loop arrangement imprisoning the end of the belt strap.
F 3 is a view like unto Fig. 1, but with the free end of the belt strap removed.
*Fig e is an edge View of the parts shown l in Fig. 3.
Fi g. is an inverted plan view oit the buckle removed from the belt strap. y V Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view, slightly enlarged, and taken on ythe line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring now more in detail to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of :reference denote similar parts throughout the several views, let 10 indicate atypical form of belt' strap having its free end 11 provided with apertures 12 for the reception of the tongue or prong portion 13 of the buckle 14. Said buckle 14 is preferably piece ot material, suitably decorated, and having its rear portion rounded as indicated at 15, (see Fig. 5) for pivotal engagement with the loop eXtensions 16 formed in the plate 17. It will be noted yin Fig. 3 that said extensions 16 are spaced to permit the attachment of the prong 13 to said rear portion 15, said prong 13 being bent to form an eye 18 for this purpose. in Figs. 2 and 5, the sides of said plate 17 are bent laterally to provide Ganges 19 and 20, each being aper- 22 for the reception of pintles 23 extending from the clampe ing jaw 211, the latter being angular in crosssection, one leg Vbeing provided with serrations 25, while the other leg 26 serves as means for operating said jaw. The rear portions of said flanges 19 and 20 are cutaway, as indicated at 27, and this cut is continued into the adjacent portion of said plate 17 to portion of said plate, said loop beingadapted indicated at 29, (see permit the insertion of the loop arrangement 28, and in order that the latter may be maintained in this position the rear marginal portion of said plate 17 is slightly deflected, as Fig. 4). Asshown in be formed from a Fig. 6, said loop 28 may bent as shown, but
single piece of material, obviously a continuous loopmay be provr From the foregoing it 1s apparent that my invention comprises but a few simple parts,
which are groupedv or combined 'to formla f unitary structure embodying a buckle, a plate pivotally carrying said buckle, said 1plate further being constructed in a manner to permit thelattachment of a clamping jaw and finally al loop arrangement for the reception of the free end of a belt strap clamped at its otherV end by said clamping jaw.
The article will be sold to the public as a structure and hence it isonly necesunitary sary to aliiX one end of the belt strap beneath said plate and operate the clamping aw,
lwhereupon the strap is affixed as indicated in Fig. 2. After the free end has been passed through the buckle and adjusted within the proper aperture 12, the extremity of said strap ris inserted within the loop arrangement 28, as shown in Fig. 2. The buckle is l adapted to withstand hard usage andv permits the interclianging offbelt rstraps as desired.
Various slight changes might be madein the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, vand hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and Y scope of the appended claims.
`I claim: f l. In a buckle,
from the sides of said plate, a clamping Jaw mounted in said apertured flanges and adapted to be operated to affix one end of abelt strap beneath said plate, said flanges presenting cutaway portions, and a loop insertible with-in said cutaway portions andaixedto said plate, said loop being adapted. to receive the free end of a belt strap. f
2.V In a buckle, a plate pivotallysupporting a buckle, a clamping jaw cooperating ywith said plate and adapted to be operated to affix one end of a belt strap beneath said plate, u
said plate presenting cutaway portions ad] alcent the rear thereof andy a loop insertible kwithin said cutaway portions and adapted to be secured by deliecting the/'rear marginal to receive the free endof a belt strap.
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature.
