My present invention relates to razors, and more particularly to razors of the so-called straight type, especially adapted to accommodate removable blades of the well-known double edge safety razor type.
An important object of the present invention is the provision of a razor which will be economical to manufacture, and in which the blades will be easily and readily removable and replaceable.
A further object of the invention resides in the novel clamping means for holding the removable blade in shaving position.
Another feature of the invention consists in the fact that when the blade is assembled and clamped in ray-novel razor, but one cutting edge of said blade will be exposed, the opposite cutting edge and the ends of the blade being concealed Within and protected by the cooperating plates between which the blade is received and clamped.r
While the device illustrated in the draw ings of the present application is primarily intended as a razor, nevertheless said device also affords a convenient and handy holder for stropping or honing the blade carried thereby..
A still further object of the invention resides in slightly concaving the outer surfaces of the cooperating clamping plates soV that, when the blade is folded intothe pivoted handle, the razor will be caused to remain in f folded position by means vof the frictional engagement of the cooperating clamping plates with the handle sections. Y
Another object of the invention residesin providing, on one of said clamping plates, a plurality of studs, two yor more in number, and in providing the cooperating clamping plate with a plurality of apertures adapted to receive and accommodate the said studs when said plates are in assembled and clamped position.
A further feature ofthe invention resides in so mounting the cooperating clamping plate with the opening therein that said plate may be released from clamping engagement with the plate having the studs thereon and spaced slightly away therefrom and then swung out of engagement .with said studded plate, thus permitting removal, reversal or replacement of the blade.
A still further feature of the invention is in the fact that even when the apertured clamping plate is released from the studded slate, said apertured plate will be prevented from separating from the razor, thus insuring against loss of any of the parts of the razor.
While the clamping plates in the drawing of the present application have been illustrated as having substantially flat blade-contacting surfaces, it will .be appreciated that4 the blade-contacting surfaces may be formed slightly'concave, if desired, to more closely 65 fit the very slightly convexed surfaces of certain types of double edge safety razor blades.
The above and other objects and features of the invention, details of construction, combinations of parts and advantages, will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, described and claimed.

Referring now to the drawings, for aparticular description of the invention, its construction and assembly, said razor comprises a stem l having a plate 2'on its outer end. On this plate 2 are formed a plurality of 95 buttons or studs 3, here rillustrated as three in number, although it will be appreciated that the central stud may be omitted and but two studs utilized, if desired.` On this plate 2 is'adapted to be placed a blade 4' of the 100 illustrating a present invenwell-known double edge safety razor type. The plate 2 is of such an extent and area that but one edge of the blade 4 will be exposed, the plate 2 extending beyond the edges of the blade4 and beyond the cutting edge which is not being utilized. Adapted to be positioned over the blade 4 is a second plate 5 having therein a series of apertures G adapted to accommodate the studs 3, this plate 5 being of substantially the same size and area as the plate 2. The plate 5 is provided with a stem or shank 7 carrying a thumb screw 8 having a threaded stem 9 adapted to cooperate with a threaded recess 10 and be threaded therethrough.
lVhen the plate 5 is positioned over the blade 4 and withthe studs 3 positioned in the apertures 6, the thumb screw 8 is then tightened, securely clamping the two plates 2 and 5 together, the under side of the thumb screw 8 being of a sufficient area to insure a firm clamping action. 'I he opposite end of the threaded stem 9 is headed over, as illustrated at 11, to insure against separation of the shank 7 from the stein 1.
lVhen it is desired to remove, reverse, or replace the blade 4, the thumb screw 8 is loosened, the plate 5 raised from the plate 2 and then swung upwardly or downwardly on the screw 9 as a pivot, permitting ready access to the blade 4.
One end of the stem 1 is provided with a linger hold or grip 12 and adjacent to this finger hold 12, at 13, is pivoted a handle comprising two sections 14, 14, these sections being united at 15 and secured by rivets 16 or the like.
rlhe outside surfaces of the plates 2 and 5 are preferably concaved, as illustrated at 17 and 18 respectively, and thus, when the razor is folded to the position illustrated in Fig. 7, these surfaces 17 and 18 will engage the inner sides or edges of the handle sections 14 and cause a slight wedging action and, through frictional engagement, will retain the razor in folded position.
The upper edges of the plates 2 and 5 are relatively thick, so that the razor will have approximately the same weight as a solid blade razor of the old fashioned straight type. The increased thickness at the tops of the plates 2 and 5 also will be of assistance in stropping the blade 4, to provide the proper angle or bevel for the sharpening action. 'i
It will thus be seen that I have devised a simple, desirable, ellicient razor and since I believe the same is novel I have claimed the same in the present application.
By my invention a shaver is assured of a razor having all the beneficial attributes of the old fashioned straight razor, with the further and added feature of a constantly sharp cutting edge, obtained by reversing the blade being used, or by replacing a used blade with a new blade. At the same time he is enabled to resharpen the blades, if desired.
While I have necessarily described my present invention somewhat in detail, it will be appreciated that I may vary the size, shape and arrangement of parts within reasonably wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The head of the thumb screw 8 is of greater diameter, across its top, than the width of the stems 1 and 7. This permits easy operation of said thumb screw, and at the same time affords a wide bearing surface to insure better locking and clamping action between the stems 1 and 7, and hence between the plat-es Q and 5.
It will also be appreciated that, instead of providing the apertures 6 in the plate 5, I may provide recesses, to accommodate the lugs 3. This is optional with the manufacturer, either from being equally within the scope of the invention.
My invention is further described and defined in the forni of claims as follows:
1. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being` adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on each of said plates, and means to lock said stems together, whereby sain blade will be clamped between said pla-tes, said locking means also constituting a pivot for one of said stems.
2. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on each of said plates, means to lock said stems together, whereby said blade will be clamped between said plates, and a handle pivotally attached to one of said stems and foldable over said blade, the other of said stems being pivotally attached to said first stem intermediate the pivot point of said handle and the plate on said lirst stem.
3. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on each of said plates, means to lock said stems together, whereby said blade will be clamped between said plates, and a handle pivotally attached to one of said stems and foldable over said blade, said plates being constructed and arranged to effect a wedging action in said handle, whereby the frictional engagement of said plates with said handle will retain said razor in folded position, said locking means being located intermediate the pivot point of said handle and the plate on the stem to which said handle is pivoted and constituting, when in unlocked position, a pivot for the other of said stems.
4C. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethroughl said plates beingadapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on each of said plates, means to lock said stems toget-her, said means also constituting a pivot for one of said stems, whereby said blade will be clamped between said plates, and a handle pivotally attached to one of said stems and oldable over said blade, the outer surfaces of said plates being concave, and being of greatest thickness at their upper edges, whereby, whensaid plates are positioned in said handle, the frictional engagement thereoi:l will retain said razor in folded position.
5. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on said studded plate having a threaded aperture therethrough, a stem on said apertured plate carrying a thumb screw adapted to be threaded through said threaded aperture to lock said stems in clamping position, and means to permanently unite said two stems.
6. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on said studded plate having a threaded aperture therethrough, a stem on said apertured plate carrying a thumb screw adapted to be threaded through said threaded aperture to lock said stems in clamping position, and a head on one end of said thumb screw to permanently unite said two stems.
7. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on said studded plate having a threaded aperture therethrough, a stem on said apertured plate carrying a thumb screw adapted to be threaded through said threaded aperture to lock said stems in clamping position, and means to permanently unite said two stems in engagement, the head of said thumb screw being of greater diameter than the width of said stems.
8. A razor of the kind described, comprising two cooperating plates, a plurality of lugs on one of said plates, the other said plate having means therein to receive said lugs, said plates being adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a stem on each of said plates, one of said stems being pivotally attached to the other said stem, and means to lock said stems together, whereby said blade will be clamped between said plates, said locking means also comprising the pivot for the pivotally attached stem.
