Description

Sept. 2, 1930. J, B FR|EDMAN ET AL SAFETY RAZOR HANDLE Filed Jan.' 11, 192e v /NVENTO/?s. JOSEPH B. FRIEDMAN. ALBERT E. FRIE Patented Sept. 2,' 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE i JOSEPH n. FBIEDMAN AND ALBERT a Immun, or sm yann-cisco, cnLrronNu SAFETY-RAZOR HANDLE Application med January 11, 1928. Serial No. 245,949.
Our 'invention relates to a new and improved article of manufacture wherein the detachable handle of a safety razor of the type having a detachable head and blades operates as a container for said head and blades wnen detached and not in use/thereby providing a self-contained safety razor. A
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved article of manufacture comprising a self-contained safety razor.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved handle for safety razors arranged to operate as a container forl the detachable head and blades 0f said razor when said head and blades are not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved article of manufacture consisting of a safety razor having a handle rovided with means for storing the detacha le head and blades as Well as additional blades, whereby the cost of a separate container for the razor, when not in use, may be eliminated.
A still further object is to provide a convenient means for storing or transporting a safety razor when not in use.
We accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings formin a part of the present application wherein lljrike characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the specification and drawings, and in which?- Fig. 1 is an elevation of our improved razor assembled for use; v
Fig. 2 is a partly broken side elevation of 1g. 3 1s an end view of the container or with the detachable head and blades removed.
Referring to the drawings the numeral l is used to designate a hollow handle having an open end and provided with a reduced portion 2 having a threaded aperture 3 in the end thereof to detachably engage the central threaded lug, not shown, of a head 4 of a safety razor of the Gillette type. As this detachable head, consisting of two pieces, is so well known and forms no part of the present invention it need not be shown in` detail or further described.
F rictionally engaging the interior surface or wall of the hollow handle l is a U-shaped spring member 6 provided at opposite sides with suitable spring legs 7 at the bottom thereof, which legs 7 are arranged to hold the member 6 in such relation to the hollow handle and the open end thereof that a package of razor blades 8 held within said Ujshaped spring member 6 will be projected slightly beyond the said open end, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings and thereby facilitate removal of one or more blades when re uired for use.
ne of the legs of the U-shaped spring member 6 is provided with a shelf formed by a struck up leg 9 extending laterally from the members 6 in order to support the detachable head 4 within the recess of the hollow handle 1 in such relation thereto that said head 4 will also be projected slightlybeyond ',the open end of the hollow handle 1 as dis! closed in Fig. 4 of the drawings, also for the purpose of facilitating removal of said headv 4 when required for use.
A suitable. semi-circular flap 10 may be provided on the top of one leg of the member 6 opposite the head compartment in order to close the space at the open end of the hollow handle 1.
The member 6 is a spring member in order to exert a slight pressure upon the head 4 L and press the same close to the opposite or adjacent inner surface of the hollow handle 4 and thereby provide a snug fit. This is further enhanced by the package of blades 8 so that the said head 4 and blades 8 may be snugly contained within the hollow handle 1 and thus form a compact self-contained safety razor with the handle operating as a container for the head and extra blades.
A cap 11 is provided to screw onto the open end of the container or handle 1 and is provided with an annular shoulder 12 to engage the end of the said open end of the said handle 1 and thereby hold the inner surface of said cap 11 in spaced relation to the end of the handle'l to prevent jamming of said cap against the ends of the extra blades 8.
\ In operation the cap 11 is unscrewed and the head 4 and one of the blades 8 are removed and assembled in the usual manner and the head 4 is then detachabl mounted upon the reduced end of the hand e 1 by screwing the central threaded lug or stud of said head 4 into a threaded aperture 3 in the end of the reduced portion 2 of the said handle 1, and the tension or adjustment of the blade 8 is accomplished in the. well known manner, andthe razor is then assembled for use, such operation being completed, if desired, by rescrewing the cap 11 back onto the open end of the container 1.
This flat cap further provides a means whereby the razor may be temporarily stood upon its end, vertically, if desired, instead of laying the same flat upon a surface, which is not ossible with the present safety razor of the illette type.
After'use the head and blades are disassembled and restored to their respective compartments within the hollow handle 1 as dis-I closed in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the cap '11 is then screwed in lace to close the open end of the hollow han e or container.v
` Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let-1 ters Patent is- 1. As an article of manufacture, a hollow handle open at one end and provided with means for detachably engaging a safety razor head and blades at the other end thereof; a spring member detachably mounted within the handle and comprising a pair of spaced partitions connected at their lower ends and adapted lto normally spring apart, said partitions formin pockets within the handle to receive a` sa ety razor head and a plurality of blades.
