Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 177,187, dated May 9, 1876 application filed February 11, 1876.
To all lwhom it may concern v Beit known that I, ELMOEE WILLIAMSON, of New Ross, county of Montgomery, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Windmills, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of the construction of parts, as fully set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. v

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the socket of the sail-frame. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the angular support of the sails. Fig. 5is an enlarged view of the revolving head and its connections.
A A represent the standards, upon which is securely bolted, at the top, the cap B, which has a hole through it to allow the pump-rod FlL to vibrate in. a revolving head, D C, which is mounted upon rollers (not shown) between the bottom of C and top of cap B. The upper part of the revolving head C D is formed with a frame, D
i D', the upper end of which is provided with a hollow guide, F, and the lower part, G, has a hole through it from bottom to top, in which works the pump-rod F1.i On one side of the frame D is secured the vane E. 0nthe other side ofthe frame D is permanently attached a wrought-iron tube, H2, (shown more fully in Fig. 5,) and on the inside of this tube, which is bored out, is fitted the main shaft H1, which extends through the side frame D', and is provided with a crankwheel, H. The other end of the shaft H1 projects beyond the wrought-iron tube H2, andis firmly secured in the hub B ofthe wind-wheel. On the outside of the hollow wrought-iron pipo H2 is also fitted the hub M of the governor. This hub is provided at one end with a sheave, O, and at the bottom side with a projecting lug to receive the weightrodY, and at the top side is provided with a hinge joint, Q', to which is pivoted, at Q, the upper shaft or arm T of the governor.` At the upper end of the shaft T is secured a faceboard, U, which is perforated with a large hole, in which is secured, at an angle, the sails V by Above the cap B is arranged is pivoted to the vane E at d, and to the shaft.

This causes the face Of the wind-wheel to be moved around at anangle to the wing and prevents the wheel governor is provided with a chain, Y, which is also'attached to the revolving head C D, as shown, to prevent the governor or faceboard V from being thrown too far on eitherside. On the side ofthe revolving head-frame, near the top, is arranged a sheave, L, over which the rope m is carried to the sheave 0 on theend of the governor-hub M.' The other end of the rope mis secured to the clutch F2, which is attached to the lower part of the pump-rod F1. This clutch encircles the sleeve n, which is formed with a square socket that fits the Square shaft Fl, and by this means the shaft F can revolve or move around with the wind without changing the position of the clutches F2 and F5, which are below and connected together by the rods p p. The lower end of the pump-rod F1 is pivoted to the upper end of the square pump-rod F5, between the two clutches F2 F5, as shown. And the lower clutch F5 is also connected with the lever m2 by means of the connection m1. This lever m2 is at the bottom ofthe mill, and is designed to be operated by hand, to throw the wind-wheel out of the wind, by pulling down on the rope m, which passes over the pulleys L and O and operates the governor by pulling the faceboard V to one side, thus throwing the windwheel into the Wind, so as to stop the mill. The crank H is connected direct with the pump-rod F1 by means of the pitrnan J, as shown, and the pumprod F1 works in a bearing or hole forward inthe lower and upper part of the revolving head C D, and prevents the rod from getting out of line. The sails of the face-board and wind-wheel are secured to the angular screw sockets $2503, (shown in Fig. 4,) andthe braces ofthe wind-wheel are secured in sockets, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the pipe H2 and re volving head C D, the `hub M of the governor, arranged to operate in the manner shown and described. 2. The hub M, provided with the sheave O at one end, and the hinge-joint Q at the top, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the hub M, rod an weight Y Y1, and hinged arm T, provided with the face-board U, which is perforated and furnished with the sails V, as shown and described.

7. The angular sail-supporting casting zo, constructed as shown, and provided with the screw :v3 to secure the casting to the windwheel or face-board, as set forth and described.
