Description

,W. T. De LUCE.
VALVE-GRINDING MACHINE. No. 177,105. Patentd May 9,1876.
N PETERS. PHOTDJJTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D. C.
" NITED STATES WILLIAM T. DE LUGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVE-GRINDING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 1. DE LUcE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Grinding Device, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a bottom view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for holding a valve upon its center while grinding it in its seat, which shall be so constructed as to enable the valve to be ground without detaching it from the pipe, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use. The invention consists in the combination of the slide and its clamping-bolt, the couplings and their setscrews, the rods or tubes, the cross-head nut, and the center-screw with the vise, to adapt the device for use in grinding valves in their seats while attached to their pipes, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base, B the stationary jaw, and (J the movable jaw, of a vise. D is the screw by which the jaw O is moved forward and back, to clamp and release the pipe to which is attached the valve to be ground. Upon the base A is placed a slide, E, which is secured in any desired position by a bolt, F, the head of which slides in a T- groove in the bottom of the said base "A. Upon one side of the slide E is formed a stem, which enters the arm of an L-coupling, G, where it is secured in place adjustably by a set-screw, 9 In the other arm of the coupling G is secured, by a set-screw, 9 a short rod or tube, H, the other end of which is secured in an 177, 105, dated May 9, 1876; January 29, 1876.
arm of the cross or double -T"coupling I by a application filed set-screw, 2. In the other'arm of the coupling I is secured, by a set-screw, a short rod or pipe, J, To the other end of the rod or tube J is attached a crosshead, K, through which is formed a screw-hole to receive a centering-screw, L, the point of which is to be applied to the center of the valve-stem. This construction enables the device to be adj nsted as the position of the valve to be ground and the pipe to which it is attached may require.
In using the devicethe jaws B O are secured to the pipe, and the device is adjusted to bring the point of screw L to the center of the valvestem. The screw L is then turned up, the valve-stem'removed, and the stnffin box moved up upon the valve-stem as far as it will go. The emery and oil are then applied to the disk, the stem is replaced. and the screw L is turned down so as to be just tight. The valvestem is then turned around I by its hand-wheel a few times, and the valve will be ground into its seat as Well as when new.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of pipe-clamping device A B O D E F and valve-stem centering-screwv L of the L-coupling G, receiving the adjustable stem of slide E in one arm, the rod H adjustable in the other arm, the T-coupling I adjustable on the rod H, the rod J adjustable in coupling I, and the cross-head nut K, as shown and described, to enable valves to be ground without removal.
