Patented July 15, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE LOCK Application led .Tune 20,
This invention relates to locks, and is more particularly concerned with portable locks of the pad-lock type 1n which a shackhng element is inserted through an opening and" is held locked against unauthorized removal.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a portable lock of this type hav ing a shackling element formed for general application and use and presenting an abutment surface ol substantial area resisting withdraual.
A further object is the provision of a lock having a shackling element capable of insertion through locking openings with the shackling element and the body of the lock different angular posi- Such an arrangement disposes the body of the lock where it is out of the way and does not present an obstruction or an awkward a ppearance.
The invention consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations hereinafter described and claimed and is more fully described in the following detailed specifica- -tion which is to be read in -conjunctionwith the accompanying drawings forming part thereo'tl and in which l Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention` the toggle shackle being shown in iexed locked position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the'lock shown in Figure 1. y
Figure 3 is an end elevation of said lock with the shackle inserted through a fastener opening and flexed to locking position and with the main lock body singularlyv disposed relatively to the shackle and its supporting yoke. l
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the lock in toggle flexed position, taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2, the links of the toggle being shown in dotted lines in their Straightened longitudinally alined position for insertion t'hrougha fastener opening. Figure 5 is a transverse horizontal section taken on line'- of Figure 4. i
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail showing the key-receiving locking foot of the actuating plunger.
1928. Serial No. 286,785.
Figure 7 is an exploded view of the toggle links and their actuator plunger.
Figure 8 is a detail of a key be used to operate the plunger.
In'structurally embodying the invention, 55 provision is made of a main'lock body portion l of suitable shape and material which is cored 'to provide a central circular bore 2 extending vertically therethrough. The base of body `1 may be faced by a plate 3 60 having its inner face in line with bore 2'prosuch as may .vided with a circularrecess of greater diameter than the bore seating a key hole disk 4 having itsedges held between plate 3 and body 1 for rotative movement.
The upper face of the body portion 1 in line with the borei-2 is formed with anl upstanding anchor block 5 centrally bored in alinement with the bore 2 which extends upwardly within the anchor block. At oppo- 70 site sides of this bore, parallel upstanding wings 6 are provided. Between these Wings and the opposite outer faces of the anchor block, curved seats 7 are formed to receive the similarly curved feet 8 of any elongated 7 shackle yoke 9, thevparallel verticalbars 10 of 'which are joined at their upper ends byl the lcross bar 11 forming an abutment seat for a shackle in the form of a toggle joint mounted Within the yoke between its bars 811 10. This toggle joint is formed of comple` mental pairs of pivotally interconnected links, the upper links 12 of each pair being provided with staggered -hinge lugs 13 (Figure 7) .by means of which they are pivotally Si connected to each other and to the upper end of the yoke through a pivot pin 14; The lower ends of the upper links 12 and the up.- per ends of the lower. links 15 of each pair havesimilarly arranged hinge lugs by means 5 of which they are interconnected through pivot pins 16. The lower free ends of the pairs of interconnected links 12 and 15 have similar hinge lugs 17 by means of which they are pivoted to the ear.18, Figure 7, at the 95 upper end of an actuating plunger 19 which extends through the bore in the anchor block 5 which bore is alined with the pivot point' 14 at the upper end of the yoke. The actuating plunger 19 is provided with an oper-l 10U arranged for reverse movement through key controlled means to actuate the locking toggle joint to a fastener locking position.
Accordingly, the bore 2 is provided -with i diametrically opposite slots 22 therein extending from the bot-tom plate 3 upwardly to a point adjacent the top face of thebloc where they are mergedinto an annular recess 23 forming retaining ledges extending outwardly trom the walls of the bore. The lower plunger section 20 is formed with a locking disk 24 having op'posed'radially extending arms 25. The diameter of the disk corresponds with that of the bore 2 and the radial arms 25 are of a length to extend in and slide up and down in the slots 22 and to enter and turn in the annular recess 23 and rest upon and be supported upon the ledges formed by the lower side-thereof. Be-
1 tween the upper face of the disk 24 and the upper end of the anchor block within the extension of the bore 2 therein, a coil spring 26 encircles the lower plunger section 20 and normally. urges the plunger 19-20 downwardly when the arms 25 of its bottom disk are alined with and seat in the Vertical slots 22. The disk 24 will, therefore, normally be positioned through the spring 26 atz the bottoni of the bore 2 in the mainy body 1. In this i position, the toggle joint formed by the pairs ot pivotally, interconnected toggle links 12 and `,will be straightened out so that the pairs of links 1215 are inV longitudinal ailinement with each other and. with the yoke liiiirs 10. 'l'heret'ore in this position of the parts, the yoke bars with the longitudinally alined toggle liniks may be easily inserted tlrrrough a. ii'astener' opening such as the usual hfaisp eye. When; the yoke -and its. tog" eshackle` have thus been inserted, a key'T as' the key 27, (Figure- S) is inserted through the key disk 4 and into a correspondingly shaped slot 28 formed iinf the underside of the locking disk 2:4 ol" the' actuating. plunge-r 20, the slot extending only partway into the disk which is suitably swiveled on the plunger for rel'ati'v'erotary movement. Upward pressure now applied to the disk through the inserted key will move the disk 24..and its connectedv plunger 19-20 upwardly until the arms reach the upper ends of the slots 22. lVhent-his point-is reached; thearms are alined withthe annular recess 23 and the key is given a partial "rotation bringing e um@ m-mq nvm- Hm lower wall of the recessV such against which they are. held by the pressure l of the tensioned coil sprlng 26. As the key is thus rotated, the key disk 4 turns on the plate 3 and the swiveled connection of the disk 24 with the plunger 20 permits a similar rotatin(r movement independently of the plunger. ihe key may now be withdrawn and the plunger is locked in its Aupwardly moved position.
This upward increment of lthe plunger flexcs the toggle joints formed by the pairs of links 12-15 moving the links transversely, and in the construction shown, extending them in horizontal alinement to present a transversely extending abutment traversing a. fastener opening such as the alined slots 29 in the fastener plates 30 (Figure 3) and preventing withdrawal of the shackle formed by the toggle joint from the fastener.
The extent of upwardmovement of the plunger 19 is pre-figured by reasonof the location of the locking recess 23 to position the plunger pivot- 21 in alinement with the point' of pivotal connection between the lower ends of the yoke bars 10 and the anchor block 5. This alinement of points of pivotal-connection in the locking position of the shackle toggle pern'iitsthe toggle with its supporting yoke and upper plunger section 19 and the main lock body 1 with its anchor block 5 to have a relative angular swinging movement as suggested in Figure 3' so that the body Aof thelock will assume' a vert-ical or othwith the Yoke to form an awkward obstruction. When it is desired to release the lock, the main body portion 1 will be swung' up.` wardly to aline with the yoke, the key 27 will be inserted through the key disk 4 and into the slotted'bottom disk 24 of the plunger and rotated to aline the arms 25 with the bore slots vwhereupon the Vcoil spring 26 will function to move the plunger 19-20 downwardly straightening the links 1'2-15 of the toggle joint into longitudinal alinement as shown in dotted lines7 Figure 4, and permitting the shackle formed by the toggle joint to be withdrawn through the fastener opening. j
l A lock constructed as above described has lCl the 'advantage' over padlocks as heretofore made or proposed in that its shackli'ng eiemen-t may be inserted through an appropriate openingin a door.rx drawer or other object to be locked, and through a hasp or other fastener located'on the-interior;` so that with a lock of this type, a concealed hasp or other lock can. be used which is not subject to breakage in attempted forcing of the locked art.
Preferably, the under tace of the cross bar 11 of theyoke is oppositely beveled as at 31, Figure 4; to provide for engagement therewith of the upper ends ofthe linksl 12 in tlfie iiexed transversely extended ,positionof any suitable locking mechanism effective to able in line with said yo e, with its upperv provide for the closing and opening or alining and flexing of the toggle joint may be utilized. The specific construction of locking yoke` shackle, plunger and lock body, while represent-ing a preferred embodiment of the invention is intended as illustrative and notl restrictive thereof, the construction being subject to modification and adaptation to suit varying conditions of manufacture and use within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
