This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 199,042, for
boom bucket control mechanism'for concrete distributing apparatus, filed June th, 1927,
and is directed particularly to a novel type of bucket door operating mechanism.
An important object in View is the provision of mechanism of this character which will operate to automatically open and close the bucket door coincident with certain op erations of the boom, but wherein the mechanism is dependent for automatic operation only on movement of the bucket along the boom, and is not associated in operation with the cable conventionally employed to cause backward and forward movement of the bucket along the boom. As a result of at taining the end just described, I am able to employ my new bucket door operating mechanism with any type of boomand bucket regardless of what mechanism is availed of for causing movement of the bucket along the boom. V
In carrying out my idea somewhat more specifically, I aim to include in the bucket door operating mechanism, a member which is adapted for cooperation with the boom to impart opening'and closing actions to the bucket door.
A highly important feature is the provision of a member as noted in the preceding paragraph, which is designed to cooperate with the boom upon movement of the bucket in only one direct-ion therealong. 'This is accomplished. in view of the conditions created by conventionaloperation of a paving machine embodying such a boom and bucket construction wherein a loaded bucket is moved outward along the boom to any desired point without depositing any of its contents on the road bed,.but immediately reverse movement is imparted to the bucket, my novel mechanism is operated by the member engaging the boom to open the bucket do or whereupon distributing action commences.
Upon the bucket reaching the inner end of the boom, certain instrumentalities there located operate to bring into operatlon the member which cooperates with the boom to' cause opening and closing movements of the v bucket door, and in this manner the bucket dooris automatically closed, so that the bucket 1s ready'to receive a fresh charge of mate rials. i y
In a practical embodiment of the inven tion this member which engages the boom,
takes the form of a friction wheel which normally is out of engagement with the boom. but which is brought into contact therewith when it is essential to automatically open or close the bucket door through the bucket door operating mechanism. Thebucket D is provided with aswing door 1 suspended from two arms, 2 and 3, and weighted at its upper edge as shown at 4 to provide a counter-balance. Assum'ethat the distributing bucket has deposited its contents upon the surface and under power of the mechanism causing movement of the bucket along" the boom, is returning towards the innerv end of the boom so as to receive another charge of material. With reference to Figure 2 ofthe drawings, it will be noted that the trip'lever 23 is in its upper vertical position andin its path-of movement lies a trip arm 24 carried by the boom and depending therefrom. It is notable that at this time the flat 22 is uppermost and slightly spaced from the boom so that the Wheel 20 is out of engagement therewith and stationary; Immediately the trip lever 23 impinges the arm 24:, the shaft 15 is rotated in its bearing, causingthe true periphery of the wheel 20 to contact with the boom as shown distinctly in Figure. 3, marking the initiation of the closing movement of the bucket door, the rotary motion of the wheel being transmitted through the parts 15, 14C, 13, 12,10, 9, and 6 to the door lever 2. When the wheel has rotated so far that the flat 21 reaches the uppermost positio nit will then be spaced from the boom, and turning action ceases and the door is in its closed position. Thislast described rotation of the wheel'20 brings a one-way actuating pawl 25 carried by the wheel 20, into cooperative relation with the boom with which it has, under certain conditions, biting engagement. thereby initiating rotation of the wheel 2-0 sufficiently to bring the true periphery thereof lnto contact with the boom, and the continuation of the inward travel of the bucket causes further rotation of the wheel 20 which moves the bucket door into open position such as shown in Figure 2, whereby the contents of the bucket are distributed on a road bed. Immediately the bucket door reaches the inner end of the boom, it is automatically closed as previously described.
So as to insureproper operation of the bucket door operating mechanism, certain safety instrumentalities are provided which will now be described. Pivotally mounted on the head of the bucket D adjacent the wheel 20 is a safety friction stop 26 which permits free movement of the wheel 20 in one direction but which functions to prevent any reverse of such movement which might possibly allow the wheel 20 to accidentally operate reversely to the desired direction, as will be clearly understood.
Inasmuch as the inward movement of the bucket not only'deposits prepared concrete on a road bed but also distributes the same, I have provided for a variable opening of the bucket door. To this end the crank 9 and its connection with the rod 6 are formed with a series of apertures 27. The number provided in the illustrated construction will permit of three different degrees of the opening of the door such as shown in full and dotted line positions of Figure 2 of the drawing. i
The door 1 has the movement in the plane of its body or that of the opening of the bucket which closes, also as it floats, so to speak, into and from closing positions there is caused slight movement lateral to such plane. This insures tight closing especially when the latter movement is obtained by the linkage mounting of the door and the greater length of the arm or link 3 as compared with that of the arm or link 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In combination, a boom, a bucket, a carriage therefor to traverse said boom, means to move the bucket outwardly and inwardly of the boom, a door forsaid bucket, and means to positively operate the door from the boom to open and close the same including a member which travels both along the boom and in contact therewith during door open-' ing and closing operations.
2. In combination, a boom, a bucket to traverse said boom, meansto move the bucket outwardly and inwardly of the boom, a door for said bucket, and means to operate the door from the boom including a member which-travels on the boom during door opening and closing operations and means for interrupting such travel during periods when 3. 6. In boom bucket door operating mechanism of the class described, the combination of a bucket and support therefor, a door for said bucket swingingly supported on said bucket, a rotatable actuating member, a yieldable support for said actuating member, means for adjusting said support to dispose the actuating member in cooperative relation to the bucket support, a shafton which said actuating member is mounted, connections between said shaft and the bucket door, and a trip member connected with the shaft for shifting the actuator from inoperative position to cooperative position with relation to the bucket support. In combination, a boom, a carriage to traverse said boom, a bucket swingingly supported from said carriage, a door for said bucket, operating means for said door comprising a friction wheel disposed adjacent the boom, a crank shaft on'which said wheel is mounted, a yieldable support in which said shaft is journaled, connections between said shaft and the bucket door, a trip lever connected to said shaft, a trip arm on the v 4 V 1 1,770,054. a
