Description

July 1, 1930. L, BORN GRPJDING MACHINE EZB f! Ill/TI Filed N 5 26 II/l/l/I :55 a if [607 fs moa ATTORNEY UNITED STATES ATE LEON BORN, OF HAMPTON, VIRGINIA GRINDING MACHINE Application filed November 26, 1928.
The object of this invention is to provide,
in a device for grinding paint and other material, a removable and interchangeable container or containers, so that a separate inner cylinder may be employed for each color of paint, thereby avoiding the expense and delay usuallyinvolved in the cleansing of cans when changing from one color to another.
A further object is to provide an outer rotatable casing, with driving means therefor, and means for spacing and clamping the inner detachable container in position, these retaining devices permitting of concentric and eccentric mounting.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modificatmns may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application:
Figure 1 is a view of the device in vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 22 of Figure 1.
An outer casing or housing is designated 10 and includes end members in the form of spiders or the like designated 11 and 12,
these elements carrying rigidly thereon disk members or the like 13 and 14k formed with axle members 14' and 15, the latter being mounted in bearings such as 16 in vertical stationary elements 17 and 18.
Any suitable source of power will be employed for driving the device thru pulley wheel 19 carried rigidly by axial member 14-.
Within the casing or housing 10, which is formed in two sections hingedly connected at 10 and secured as shown conventionally at 10,I mount a cylinder or inner receptacle 20 adapted to receive the material to be ground, this material being introduced thru an opening covered by a suitable closure 21. The material may also be withdrawn thru the same opening, or liquid may be withdrawn thru a connection 24 which may be controlled in any suitable manner as by means of a plug Serial No. 322,061.
valve or the like 25. A vent opening may be provided, and closed in any suitable manner.
In order to detachably mount the inner container 20 within the casing 10, I employ threaded and adjustable clamping elements 30 having wing portions 31 on their outer ends, and controlling clamping plates or the like 32 designed to positively engage the surface of the inner receptacle 20.
In the grinding operation, balls or pebbles 33 are to be introduced with the material to be operated upon, the apparatus acting as a pebble mill, and one important feature being that the inner container is not only detachable for the substitution of another container when a difierent color is to be introduced, but the inner element 20 may be mounted concentrically or eccentrically, as desired, the eccentric movement being in tended under certain conditions to provide more pronounced agitation. It will readily be understood that the devices 30 can be so adjusted that this concentric and eccentric position may be secured.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A device of the character set forth comprising a cylindrical container having a removable section, axles carried by the ends of the container and one of said axles adapted for connection with a power source, vertical supports receiving the axles to support the container horizontally, a cylindrical fluid receptacle located in said container, adjustable wing elements carried by the side walls of the container and having the wing portions disposed outwardly of said container, and plates carried by said elements for engagement with the side walls of the receptacle to support the latter either concentrically or eccentrically with the container to decrease and increase the agitation of the fluid in the receptacle during rotation of the device.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LEON BORN.
