Description

A. TANGENBE'RG' 3 HINGE.

INVENTOR. EDWARD AL BEAI' MAUBVBEFG I I This invention app Patented July 1, 1936 V, EDWARD A. TANGENBERG, or GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN V HINGE Application filed April'ze,
ertains tohinges and more particularly to hingesof thetype em bodying 'a' support associated therewith, so
that the'hingewill act as means for limiting.
the swinging movement of the leaves of the hinge relative toone another and for sup porting a device to which one of the leaves is connected. v "one of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a novel desk hinge, which isso constructedas to fully support a lid of a desk in a fully open position flush with the 'bedof the desk so as to permit said lid tobe used as a writing surface,'the leaf of the, hinge being countersunk in the edge of the lid so-as to-permittheentire top surface to be used as a writing portion.
Another important object ofmy invention is the provision of a hinge having a toggle, forming a support, hingedly connected to the leaves ofthe hinge, the toggle being so arranged as to rest on the hinge itself when i the lid of the desk is open in horizontal position flush with the bed of the desk, the bearing surface of the toggle seating on the edge 1 of the toggle and not at the ends thereof.
A further. object of my invention is the provision of a combination support and hinge embodying a pair of fiat leaves arranged at right angles to one another pivotally connected together at their inner ends by means of a rivet or pivot pin, with a toggle connected to the leaves on each side of the pivot point thereof through the medium of suitable pivot ears formeddirectly on said leaves.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved combination hinge and support of the above character, which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view,'the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imbed 11 to which the lid is adapted to so-that the leaf 15 can be secured 1929. Serial No. 358,377.
proved hinge showingthe same applied to a fragment of a desk and illustrating the position of the hinge when the desk lid is in its raised position. v
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the position of the'hinge whenthe desk lid I is in its fully open position;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the hinge showing the same in its fully open position. Figure4 isa detail transverse section through the hinge taken on the line H of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows, and 7 A Figure '5 is a detail transverse section through the hinge taken on the line 5-5 of'Figure 3 looking in the'direction of the arrows I,
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters desig nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indic'ates my improved hinge and B a desk with which the'sameca'n be associated; I have only shown a fragment of the desk Band the same includes the swinging lid 10 and be connected-' by means of my novel hinge.
I My hinge A comprises leaves 15 and 16 which are preferably formedfroin flat sheet metal and the leaf 15 is preferably dis leaf l6 isdisposed-on edge in a vertical plane, tothe top fa'ce'of thebedll, as clearly shown, and the leaf 16 secured to the edgeofthe lid 10, as shown. 'These leaves are preferably coun tersunk respectively in-the top face of'the bed and in thesideedgeof the lid, suitable screws 17 being employed for holding the leaves in place. The-forward end of the leaf l5 hasfformed o'nits'side edge a depending so" posedfiatin: a horizontal plane while'th'ej' ear 18 whichcan be likewise countersunk'in the side edge of the bed 11 if preferred;
This ear projects slightly beyond the for-f Ward edge of the leaf 15 and is arranged in overlapping relation with the pivot: ear 19 formed on the inner end of'the leaf l6; The A ears 18 and 19 are connected together'by arivet or pivot pin 20 which permits the free swinging of the leaves relative to one anare Each leaf has ,formed thereon intermediate theendsthereof upstanding pivot ears 21 and'j22c respectively and it can be 5 seen 'that' the pivot ears: 21 is turned at right angles "to-{the body portionof the leaf,
