REUTENEB, or BAY VILLAGE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T HOWE COMP NY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO HINGE-TAPE-AFFIXING MACHINE Application filed August 15, 1928. Serial No.1 299,781.
sign to be supported in an upright position.-
In such signs, ithas been customary to score or cut the cardboard along predetermined lines so that the same may be folded. Unless some means-are provided for reinforcing the cardboard adjacent this scored or cut por tion, the sign will frequently become broken at the fold. I have therefore provided amachine for aflixn'igtape or a strip of flexible '20. material over the scored portion to provide a hinge which will permit the sign to be folded many times. without breaking. These signs are made in a variety of sizes and shapes and 1 signs of different types or sizes' are not'folded along the same lines. It is therefore the main object of this invention to provide amachine for aflixing tape to signs which can be a'djusted for use on signs of different types or sizes so as to form a hinge at any desired polnt.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus ofthe character described which is simple and compact in construction, efiicient and dependable in operation, readily assembled and disassembled and well adapted for production at comparatively low cost.
Further and more limited objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view in end elevation 'of the'right hand or drive end of the machine; Fig. 2 is aview in end elevation of the left hand end of the machine; Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary detail views of the sign showing the tape affixed thereto so as to provide a hinge; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevation of the machine taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2 with the feeding table omitted; Fig. 6 is a vertical cross sectionalview of the 50 machine taken on the line 66of Fig. 5; and
Fig. is a plan sectional view of the machine f taken onthejline 7-7 shown in Figs. 2,- 5 and6.fi v
Referringnow to the drawings the ref'-' erence character l designates generally the frame or support having a base 2, upright members 3 and 4, and cross'pieces 5. Carried by the frame is a feed table 6 and a discharge table J ournaled on the frame at one side thereof are upperandflower feed shafts 8 and 9. Keyed on the shaft 8 are a plurality of feedlrollers 10 and'keyedon the shaft 9 are a plurality of feed rollers'll. J ournaled on the frame at the opposite side thereof are upper and lower feed shafts '12 and 13 on which are keyed a plurality of' feed rollers 14. and 15, respectively. Journaledin the frame above the table 6 and adjacent the shaftS is a shaft 16"on which is keyed a pairj of rolls; 17 and 17 a which are slidable along theshaft, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
Extendingtransversely' of the frame are a 7 pair of stationary shafts 1'8an'd 18 Carriedv by the shafts 1 8, 18 are apair of platforms or shelves 19 which are slidable 'alongth'e shafts transversely of the frame. Resiliently and adjustably mounted on one of the plat forms 19 is a stub shaft 20 carrying a roller 21 which is urged into engagement with the roller 17 by coil springs 22 and 22 A similar roller 21% is carried by the other platform 19 and is urged into engagement'with theroller 17 by coil springs 23 and 23 The lower rollers 11 and 15'project through Suit able openings provided in the table 6 and are spaced from the upper rollers 10 and 14 a distance slightly'less than the thickness of thedisplay signs. 1 The upper and lower rollers are driven in opposite directions as indi-. cated by the arrowsin Fig. 6 and serve to grip the signs-and to move the same across the table 6. The reference character A in Fig. 6
designates one of the signs about to be gripped by the feed rollers. 1 1
Extending transversely of the frame above thetable 6 are a pair of stationary shafts 24:, 25. Carried by the shafts 24 and25 are a pair of platforms or shelves 26 and 27 which are slidable along the shafts independentof each other. The platform 26' is'shown in section in Fig. 6 and supported on the platform 26 is an adhesive container 28. J ournaled in the platform 26 is a shaft 29 on which is keyed a paste roller 30. Also j ournaled on the platform 26 is a shaft 31 on which is keyed a feed roller 32. The shaft 31 is adj ustably mounted and may be moved toward or away, from the shaft 29 by means of adjusting screws 33. The roller dips into the adhesive container 28 and is driven in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6. The feed roller 32 is driven in the opposite direction and normally bears against the roller 30. Keyed on the shaft 31 is a gear 34 which meshes witha gear 35 keyed on shaft 29.. "Carried by the plat form 26 is a substantially rectangular frame in which are j ournaled rollers or pulleys 36, 37 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42. Rotatably mounted in this frame is a roll of tape or similar flexible material43. The free end of the tape is passed over roller 36, thence under roller 37, then across roller 30, thence under roller '38 and under rolled 39, thence upwardly over roller 40, thence across and over roller 41, thence downwardly over roller 42 and thence around the roller 17*. Asthe tape is passed over the paste roll 30 it will be coated with a layer of adhesive material. The end, of the tape will be affixed to the display sign. being feda'cross the feeltable 6 by the feed rolls 10 and 11. The roller 21 which is resiliently mounted andurged against the roller 17 a by the springs 23 and 23 provides sufficient pressure to cause the tape to be aflixed to the sign. It shouldbe pointed out that the signs are first scored or out along straight lines and are fed between the rollers '17 a and 21 in such a position that the tape is aflixed to the sign immediately over the scored portion. The platform 26 and the mechanism carried thereby may be moved-along the shafts 24 and 25 transversely of the frame and is secured in the desired position by clamping screws 24 and 25 7 The lower platform 19 may also be moved along the shafts 18 and 18 and is secured in the adjusted position by clamping screws 18.'
The roller 17 is also adjustable along the shaft 16 to properly position the. same with respect to the adhesive applying mechanism.
The platform 27 is likewise adjustable transversely of the frame along the shafts 24 and 25 and is secured in the adjusted position by clamping screws 24 'and 25 The platform 27 likewise is provided'with mechanism for applying adhesive to the tape which is identical with the mechanism described in connection with the platform 26, the corresponding parts being designated by the same reference character with the exponent a. Supported on the top of the frame is an elec tric motor M by means of which the apparatus is driven althoughit is understoodthat the drive may be modified as desired. According to the preferredembodiment of my invention,
the motor M drives a shaft 44 through a suittable reduction gearing or transmission 45. Keyed on shaft 45 is a sprocket 46 which drives sprocket 47 keyed on shaft 16 through a chain 4"2 Keyed on the opposite end of shaft 16 is a gear '48 which drives a gear 49 loosely mounted on shaft 8. Shaft 8 is driven from shaft 16 through sprocket 48% sprocket 49' and chain 50 Upper feed shaft 12 is driven from shaft 16 through sprocket 50, chain 51 and sprocket 52. Lower feed shaft 13 is driven from shaft 16 through gear 48, loosely 'mounted' gear 49, sprocket 53 which is nonrotatably connected with gear 49, sprocket 54 and chain '55. Lower feed shaft 9 is driven from lower feed shaft 13 through sprocket 54 ,'chain 55 and sprocke't56 keyed onthe opposite end of shaft 9. It will therefore be seen that shafts 8, 12. and 16 are driven in the same direction and that shafts 9 and 13 are driven in the same direction but opposite to the shafts 8, 12 and 16.
Keyed on shaft 16 intermediate the ends thereof are gears 56 and 57' which serve to drive the adhesive applying mechanisms carried by the platforms 26 and 27 respectively. The gears 56 and 57 are freely slidable along the shaft 16. Gear 56 drives a gear 58 keyed on shaft 31 through chain 59. Gear 57 drives a gear 58 keyed on shaft 31 through a chain The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The display signs are first cutor scored along straightlines about whichthey are to be folded and are placed on the feed table face down and fed between the feed rolls 10 and 11 which grip thesame on opposite sides and feed them across the table between the rolls 17 and 21 and-17 and 21 Thetape with the adhesive applied to one side thereof is fed in strips between the rolls 17 and 21 and the rolls 17 and 21 where the coated side of the tape is applied to the display signs immediately. over the scored portions. The signs are usually scored so as to be folded along two straight lines. They are fed across the table and engaged between the rear feed rolls 13 and 14 and delivered onto the discharge table. The tape applying mechanisms are adjustabletransversely along the frame independent of each other to adapt the device for use with different signs and types of signs in which the folds are in different places with respect to the signs. It will now be clear that I have provided an apparatus which will accomplish the objects of the inventionas hereinbefore stated. Various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and my invention is to be limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claims.
