Description

W. ElERMANN June 24, 1930.
COLD WATER TUBE AND CLEANER FOR'DOMESTIC BOILERS AND HEATERS Filed Sept. 14. 1927 INVENTOR Mlliwn Iu'er'manm WITNESSES ATTORNEYS Patented June 24,v 1930 WILLIAM EIER-MANN, OF '.BROOKLYN, YORK COLD-WATER TUBE AND CLEANER FOB DOMESTIC BOILERS AND ,HEATERS Application filed September 14, 1927. Serial No. 219,512.-
This invention relates to cold water tubes and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein a properly positioned functioning cold water tube is presented to-' gether with means for causing the same to swing when a cleaning action is desired.
Another object is to provide in a domestic boiler a cold water pipe in which the structure is such that the pipe may be swung from its upper end so as to distribute water over the bottom of the boiler when acting as a cleaning pipe.
A further object is to provide an improved construction wherein a cold water tube may, if desired, be swung in a circle during the cleaning action.
In the accompanying drawing- I Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through an ordinary domestic boiler, with a combined tube and cleaning means disclosing an embodiment of the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the upper end of the cold water tube and associated parts.
Figure 3 lower part of the boiler with a modified form of the drain outlet applied thereto.
Figure 4 is a sectional View through Figure 3 on line44.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a domestic boiler of the usual type provided with the usual hot water outflow pipe 2 and cleanout pipe 3. A cold water pipe 4 is clamped to a fitting 5 by a suitable packing nut 6 as shown in Figure 2. The fitting 5 is screwed into the boiler 1 and is provided with an inturned flange 7 on which rests the outturned flange 8 of the cold water pipe 9. By reason of this construction, a proper connection of the cold water pipe 4 is made, and yet pipe 9 may be readily swung.
In order to swing pipe 9 to spray the water over the bottom 10 when pipe 9 is acting as a clean out pipe, the lower end of pipe 9 is caused to travel in a circle throughthe action of a looped member or ring 25 loosely surrounding pipe 9 adjacent the lower end.
is a sectional view showing the This ring is formed with a connecting neck 26 formed integral with or rigidly secured to the bevel gear 27 carried on a suitable standard 28 secured in any desired manner to the bottom 29 ofthe boiler 30. A pinion 31 continually meshes with gear wheel 27, said pinion having a shaft 32 extending through a suitable packing box 33 so that the knob 34 may be rigidly secured thereto. The knob 34 is in the nature of a hand wheel, and when rotated, will rotate the gear wheels 27 and 31 and thereby cause the lower end of pipe 9 to move in a circle. A forked member 35 straddles the standard 28, said forked member having a, reduced portion fitting into a suitable socket in the end of shaft 32, whereby the shaft is properly 'supported but allowed to rotate. When it is desired to clean out the boiler the cold water is turned off at some distant point and the valve 16 opened. As soon as the water is all drained from the boiler 1, the valve 16 is left open and the cold water is again turned on. This will cause the water to strike the bottom 10 with considerable force, and as the pipe 9 is swung by loop 25 and associated parts the sprayed water will be distributed over bottom 10 and charge valve 37 and also with an opening in line with pipe 36 normally closed by the plug 38. Whenever desired, plug 38 may be removed and a wire or other implement passed through pipe 36 for cleaning out anything I that might lodge therein- What I claim is: r
1. A combined cold water pipe and cleaner for boilers and heaters, comprising a pipe extending from the top of the boiler to near the bottom, said pipe at the upper end being After the I If desired, the y flared, the fitting connected with the boiler having a flange underlying said flare where by the pipe may be swung, means for connecting a cold waterpipe to said fitting, and means extending through the side of the boiler capable of manual actuation for swinging said pipe so as to distribute the water from the pipe over the bottom of the boiler.
2. A combined cold water pipe and cleaner for boilers and heaters, comprising a cold water pipe mounted at the upper end so that it can swing to difierent positions, and manually actuated means engaging said pipe and extending to the exterior of the boiler whereby the pipe may be swung for distributing water over the bottom of the boiler.
3. In a domestic boiler,-a cold water pipe and means for causing said cold Water pipe to move'in a circle when acting as a cleaning member, said means including a manually actuated member positioned exteriorly of the boiler, a shaft extending through said manually actuated member into the boiler, a pinion rigidly secured to said shaft, a gear wheel meshing with said pinion, and a looped memb'ercarried by the pinion, said looped member surrounding said pipe whereby as said gear wheel is rotated the lower end of said pipe will be moved in a circle.
Signed at New York, in thecounty of New York and State of New York, this 12th 'day of September, A. D. 1927.
