Description

PATENT FFIGE.
ELIAS STILLWELL, OF ROOKVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,703, dated April 25, 18 76; application filed February 28, 1876.-
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, ELIAS STILLWELL, of
Rockville, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Olothes-Line and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact 7 description of' the same, reference being had ing. This is done as it receives the'garments that are to be dried, so that the washer may not be required to go far from her wash room to hang the clothes. It also relates to a mode of tightening the line with facility, and protecting the line from injury by the Weather.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointedout in the claim.
A A represent two posts, which may be fixed in the ground, or in a stationary base,
and are provided with the open bearings a a on the rear side andnear the top. B is a roller having grooves 11 to receive lines, and the journals b that turn in bearings a. 0 is a second roll, having a crank, c, the roll being journaled in a frame, D. The latter is pivoted on a cross-par,c,.of the two fixed posts E E, that are placed in a proper relative position to the posts A. By drawing the frame D from the roll B until the lines F that run in corresponding ring-grooves on the rolls B O are tight, and then inserting between the frame and posts E the bar 0, the Whole is now ready for drying the clothes. The frame D is located in as convenient a position as possible to the washer, and the endless lines extended from roll 0 to the other roll B, which is situated some distance outin the yard. The washer now hangs a batch of the clothes on the lines near frame 1), and gives the crank a few turns to take them out. This is continued until all the clothes are hung out, or the lines are full. By taking out the bar 0, and loosening the lines, the roll B may be removed from its open bearings, and the lines wound up on roll 0, undera cover, G, so as to avoid being wetted by rain.
Having thus described 'my invention, what I I claim as new is v The combination of the posts A A, having open rear bearings near the top, the correspondingly-grooved rolls B 0, provided with crank on the latter, the pivoted frame D, and the endless lines F, as shown and described, so that a number of lines may be moved out with the clothes, may be tightened or loosened by a bar, 0, or may be wound up on the-r0110, as set forth.
ELIAS STILLWELL.
