Description

June 24, l930 E. B. CLEMENT ET AL 1,766,055
WINDSHIELD -SCREEN Filed/Sept. 9, 1926 Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE W'INDSHIELD SCREEN Application filed September 9, 1926. Serial No. 134,504. i
The main object of this invention is to rovide a screened windshield of the ventiator type in which ,the screen does not interfere with the opening and closing of the windshield pane and protects the opening both when adjusted to'fully open the pane or when it is opened to provide a ventilating o ening only.
A rther object is to provide a' screen which may be readily attached to windshields of the ventilator type.
Objects pertaining to "details and economies of our improvements will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a partof this application, in'which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a vehicle body having a Ventilating windshield equipped with our invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the screen proper.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the manner of attaching the screen.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section on a line corresponding to line 4 4 of Fig. 1 showing further details in the arrangement and attachment of the screen.
Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section illustrating a modified form of attaching means.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentarysection illustrating still another form of attaching means.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary vertical section showing a modified form of'screen support.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the vehicle body which is shown'conventionally. The body is provided with a windshield frame comprising a sill member 2 having a forwardly facing gutter 3 therein,
the sill member being inclined forwardly from this gutter. The frame has vertical ways 4 in which the pane 5 is mounted for vertical sliding movement. These ways are formed by suitable stops the` arrangement of which forms no part of this invention. It should be noted, however, that the pane closes in front of the gutter.
At the rear of the sill is an air delector'or ventilator 6 having its upper edge 7 curved forwardly and overhanging the` sill member but spaced from the pane. We provide a screen 8 having a bottom frame member 9 preferably offset rearwardly to engage in the gutter 3. The screen is provided with a, top frame designated generally by the numeral 10 carrying a resilient facing 11 bearing against the inner side of the pane and with which the pane slidably engages.
At its ends the screen is provided withv frame pieces 12 having angled plates 13 adapted to overlie the window stop 14 and. rest against the outer side of the finishing strip 15. The attaching plates have slots 16 therein positioned to receive one of the .attaching screws 17 of the str-ip 15.
The screen is preferably provided with a vertical cross piece 18 for reinforcing and still'ening the same, this cross piece having a downwardly projecting supporting finger 19 engaging the deflector 6 as shown in Fig. 4. With the parts thus arranged the screen may be quickly attached or detached and is supported so that it is free from vibration and rattling, and so that it is effective in screening the opening to the ventilator and also when the windshield pane is l fully raised.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the attaching plates 20 are conformed to it under the finishing strip 15 and to be clamped thereby.
`In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the attaching plate 21 is provided with a flange 22 adapted tobe clamped by the edge of the iinishingstrip 15, the ,attaching plate overlying the strip.
In Fig. 7 the screen is provided withv as clip-like attaching member 23 slotted at 24 to receive the edge of the deflector 7 to which it is secured by means of the set screw 25.
We have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other embodiments or adaptations which we contemplate as we believe the disclosure made will enable those sln'lled inthe art to embody or adapt our improvements as maybe desired.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
