IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FILLERS AND MEASURERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,555, dated April 25, 1876; application filed a January 29, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. SGHOLFIELD, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Filler and Measurer, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a funnel-topped sheet-metal tube, with open bottom, and having springs upon the outside to hold the bag up around the tube, which is enough smaller than the bag to be put in it freely, and inside the tube is sealed with lines, showing the different measures, all so that by putting the filler in the bag and shoveling in the grain the quantity can be readily ascertained, and the grain can be quickly discharged by merely pulling the filler out of the bag.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved filler and measure, taken on the line a; a; of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line y y.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is the tube; B, the funnel-top; (J, the springs; D, the scale-lines, and Ethe bag.

The springs are attached to the tube near the top, and extend to near the bottom, where they pass through slots G in the tube, to prevent the ends from catching in the bag, and to hold them so that they will contract and expand properly to hold the bags of different sizes snug and taut. The scalelines are marked on the inside of the tube by paint, or by wires soldered on, or grooves or ridges formed in the tube.

The tube may be used for filling and measuring without the springs, by having contrivance for hitching the bag to it at the top, and it may be used without the funnel, although it is better with it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The combination of spring. 0 with the filling-tube A, substantially as specified.

'2. The springs 0, connected to the tube at one end, and fitted in slots at the other end, substantially as specified.
