Description

June 17,1930. R. B. HARRIS COPYHOLDER Filed 'Feb. 25 1929 mvszvrog 19% Arioxuzx Patented June 17, 1930 Peres RALPH B. HARRIS, OF WILDER, KANSAS COPYHOLDER Application fi1ed February 25, 1929.
Myinventionrelates to improvements in copy holders. It is particularly well adapted for use by stenographers in copying from a copy sheet.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel copy holder which will be adapted for attachment to a type writer carriage, so that the copy sheet is carried along with and above the sheet on which the copy is made, thereby greatly facilitating the ease and speed of copying.
A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for holding and feeding the copy sheet.
Another object of my invention is the provision of novel means for releasably fastening the copy holder on the type writer carriage.
, The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my'invention,
Fig. 1 is a top view of my improved copy holder shown mounted on a type writer, parts of which are omitted.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the copy hold er mounted on a type writer, parts of which are omitted.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the feed roller and feed roller support, partly broken away, showing the copy sheet in, operative position on the feed roller, parts being broken away.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, the copy sheet being shown as about to be inserted in the copy holder.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the feed roller and its support.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal longitudinal section through one of the presser rollers and parts connected therewith.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the channel members which are mounted on the type writer carriage and which support the feed roller support.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates a horizontal substantially semi-cylindrical trough support, in which is Serial No. 342,593.
mounted a horizontal feed roller, comprising a cylindrical body 2, having removable end trunnions 3 which are respectively rotatably mounted in the ends of the trough support 1. The feed roller has alsoa flexible sheet at embracing the periphery of the body 2 to which one end portion only is attached to the periphery of the body 1.
A copy sheet 5 is adapted to have one end inserted between the free end portion of the flexible sheet 4., when the feed roller is turned to the position, shown in Fig. 4-.
When the feed roller is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, the copy sheet will have its front side exposed at the front of the roller.
The front and rear sides of the trough support 1 are each provided with openings 6 in which are respectively mounted presser rollers 7, Fig. 5, each having an axial pin 8, the projecting ends of which are respectively mounted in holes provided respectively in theoutwardly extending end portions 9 of two spring plateslO, which are fastened to the inner-side wall of the support 1, said end portions 9 being extended through the adjacent opening 6 of the support.
The tension of the spring plates 10 is such as will normally force the rollers 7 against the copy sheet 5, when the latter is mounted in the copy holder, Figs. 1 and 3.
For supporting the trough support 1 on the type writer carriage, the said'support is provided. at its bottom with two laterally extending arms 11, Fig. 5, having their rear ends formed rectangularly, as at 12, and which are adapted to be seated respectively in two recesses 13 provided on the upper sides respectively of two channel supporting members 14, Figs. 1, 2 and 7 which are adapted to releasably embrace the two transverse end portions 15 of a type writer carriage 16.
To adapt the copy holder to wider type writers, which are adapted for use with wider sheets, there is provided a horizontal longitudinal rod 17, which extends through. and is mounted in the rectangular portions 12 of the arms 11. Mounted on the outer ends respectively of the rod 17 are two rectangular blocks 18, so spaced as to be fittedin the recesses 18 of the members 14, when the latter are mounted on the wider type writer.
In the operation of the copy holder, the narrower machine being the one attached to, the channel members 14: are first respectively fitted on the transverse end portions 15 of the carriage 16. The trough support 1 then has its portions 12 respectively mounted in the recesses 13 of the members 14. The copy sheet 5 is then inserted between the free end of the flexible sheet and the body of the feed roller, after which the feed roller is turned,v
clockwise from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 3, upon which r' the copy sheet will be held between the rollers 7 and the flexible sheet 4:, with the first line on the copy sheet disposed at the front just above the front edge of the support 1.
The matter on the copy sheet is then copied onto a receiving sheet 19, Figs. 1 and 2, which has been placed in the type writer. As the linesv are copied one after the other from the copy sheet 5, the feed rolleris advanced step by step, by means of either one of its trunnions 3, each of which is provided with a thumb piece 20.
As the carriage 16 travels to the left in writing, the copy holder will move with it, and thus will always present the matter on the copy sheet in convenient position to be easily read, without having to shift the eyes to any great extent.
The flexible sheet 4 may be of any suitable material, such as paper or linen or cotton cloth.
21 designates the platen roller of the type Writer, Fig. 2.v
I do not limit my invention to the specific structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from v the spirit of my invention.
l/Vhat I claim is r 1. In a copy holder, a support, a feed roller rotatable thereon, a flexible sheet fastened at one end only to and adapted to embrace the periphery of said roller, and adapted to receive between its free end and said roller one end of a copy sheet and to release said end of the copy sheet when saidroller has been turned to feed said copy sheet a predetermined distance, said support being adjacent to said periphery of said roller and ar ranged to guide said sheets along the periphery of said roller, and resilient presser means on said support adapted to engage and press said sheets against the periphery of said roller. I V
2. In a copy holder, a guiding member having ends adapted to rotatably supporta feed roller on said member, the latter having two supporting arms, and two channel members adapted to releasably fit over and to be supported respectively by two transverse end members of a type wrlter carriage, each chanlatter havin two su ortin arms and two to t) 7 channel members adapted to releasably fit over and to be supported by two transverse end members respectively of a type writer carriage, each channel member having in its upper side a recess, said supporting arms being adapted to respectively'fit into said recesses and to be supported by said channel members and removable by simply lifting therefrom.
4. In a copy holder, a guiding member having ends adapted to rotatably support a feed roller on said member, the latter having two supporting arms, a supporting bar carried by said arms and having each end projecting beyond the adjacent arm at the outer side thereof, and two channel members adapted to releasably fit over and to be supported by two transverse end members respectively of a type writer carriage, each channel member having in its upper side a recess, said supporting arms and the projecting portion of said bar being adapted to respectively fit into said recesses and to be supported by said channel members and removable simply by lifting therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
