Description

J. ZILLIOX WRENCH June 17, 1930.
Filed March '7, 1928 Patented June 17, 1930 JOHN ZILLIOX, 0F ORCHARD PARK,'N YORK WRENCH Application filed March 7, 1928. Serial No. 259, 54.
This invention relates to a wrench and more particularly to an open end machine end wrench in which a plurality of open end machine wrench heads having different sized jaws are employed in connection with the same handle thereby greatly decreasing the cost of a set of such Wrenches as well as permitting of a compact and convenient kit.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide such a handle and open end machine wrench heads therefor, in which the heads can be quickly applied toor removed from the handle and when so applied are securely held to the handle and operate reliably topermit the desired pressure to be applied to the object gripped.
A further object is to provide such an open end machine wrench which is strong and which will stand up under the severe and constant use to which tools of this character are subjected.
A still further aim is to provide such an open end machine wrench which is simple and inexpensive and in which all of the more expensive manufacturing operations are performed on the handle since only one handle is used in connection with a large number of heads.
Another aim is to provide an open end machine wrench of this character in which the head can be held in different positions relative to the handle thereby permitting of its use in places where an'open end machine wrench having a head set at a fixed angle could not be employed, and in which such adjustment in the angularity of the head can be effected expeditiously and be reliably held.
Other objects are to provide such an open end machine wrench which is compact, light' and strong, thereby permitting of its convenient use by the mechanic.
In the accompanying drawings v Figure 1 is atop plan view of the preferred embodiment of my invention. Figure "2 is a side view thereof. Figure 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view thereof. Figure 5 is a fragmentary bottom planview of a modified form of the invention.
Similar reference numerals refer to like parts in each of the several views.
The preferred embodimentof my invention shown in Figs. 1-4 is constructed as follows:
The wrench i'scomposed of a handle to one side and at one end of which the open end machine wrench head 16 is applied. The wrench handle 15 may be of any suitable construction and preferably, is hollowed out on oppositesides for lightness and is provided with a hole or opening 17 "at oneend so that it can be hung up whennotin use.
The opposite end 18 of the Wrench is formed tofprovide a, flat face ,19 on its. underside whichface is engaged by theupper fiat face of the open end machine wrench head 16. This face ispref'erably set- ,at an angle to the handle sothat the head is held at a. similar angle forconvenience in manipulating the wrench;
' I The wrench head 16 comprises a pair of.
jaws 20 and a shankor neck 21 which is provided with a circular opening-or recess 2:2 which extends therethrough and receives a 75 cylindrical stem 23 which stein. projects I downwardly from the flat face 19 and is formed integrally with the handle. The engag-ement of this stem in the opening 22 holds the head tothe stem and to prevent the head 179 from accidentally dropping off friction means are providedwhich are constructed as fol lows: T
011 the underside of the handle in rear of the flat face 19 a transverse ridge 24 is pro- 2-? vidcd which engages the rearend of the neck or shank 21 of the vV1GI1Cl1 l1.8Zld andalso houses-a spring loaded pin 25 which bears against the rear end orcdge of the wrench head and thereby tends to prevent it from be 59 ing mov'ed laterally except when pressure is intentionally applied to the head to remove it from the handle. This ridge,as best-sh own in Fig. ,.4 is formed atits outer edge to pro H vide a.v flat; vertical face or shoulder 26 in the center of which a V-shaped notch 27 is provided. To permit ofdifierent angular adjustments ofthe wrench head, the shank 21 0f thesame .is formed to provide three gangular faces or its head relative to the handle are provided.
thereby providing five different adjustments for the same. In using the wrench it is merely necessary to slip the head over the stern at the desired angle'and it will be securely held thereon until it is desired to substitute the head when it may be removed laterally and another substituted.
The form shown in Fig. similar to the preferred form except that the spring loaded friction pins are provided in the sten123 and bear outwardly against the more of the opening 22 in the head. Two spring pinsfil are provided in this construction and areforced outwardly by an interposed spring 32. This form is avaliable for larger sized wrenches Where the size of the stem permits of housing the spring loaded pins.
Each form of my invention proi ides an open end machine wrench which is compact, light and durable, the wrench head is easily applied and may be adjusted to the desired angularity and when so applied is securely held against accidental displacement; but is readily removed; and the wrench and particularly the wrench headscanbe produced at low cost, thereby permitting of marlceting the wrench for a low price,
I claim as my invention:
A wrench comprising a handle, a stem projecting laterally -from one side of said handle, an open end wrench headhaving jaws and a shank, said shank being provided with an opening adapted to fit said stem and said shank being formedon its outer side torprovide at least three flat faces arranged at an angle to one another and forming pointed projections, and a ridge formed on said handle adjacent the outer sideot' said shank, said ridge-being formed to provide a. flat face opposing said shank and adapted to engage any of said faces on said shank and said ridge being formed to provide V-shaped notch at the center of its flat face, saidnotch being adapted to receive any oneot the pointed pr'ojections on said wrench head: In testimony whereof I hereby affix my signature.
