The present invention relates to improve ments in pliers, and has for an object to provide an improved construction of pliers, in which a novel form of catch or locking e device is incorporated to hold the jaws of the pliers adjusted to either a close or a loose bite.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of pliers,
l in which the aws are held normally open by spring pressure and will automatically reopen as soon as the pressure of the hand of the operator is relieved.
A further object of the invention is to l provide an improved construction of pliers in. which an arrangement `of teeth is provided in the jaws of the pliers, the inclination of the teeth extending in opposite directions to increase and improve the biting l0 action.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, and 11 indicate the jaws of the improved pliers and 12 and 13 designate the 45 handles to which the jaws are coupled.
.lne handle 13 projects through a slot 14 in the companion handle 12, and it is pivoted therein on the bolt or fulcrum pin 15, which is provided with a head 16, shown 53 in Figure 1, and the nut 17, whereby the Serial No. 406,468.
fulcrum pin may be removably mounted through both of the handle members. lt will be noted, particularly with reference to Figures 3 and t, that the shank of the pin 15 is substantially rectangular or is provided with flat sides in order to agree substantially with the flat walls of the intermediate portion 18 of the slot in the handle member 13. This slot is composed of the intermediate narrow constricted neck 18 and the two outer enlarged, preferably rounded, end portions 19 and 20. The slot 14 in the handle 12 will be of such dimens sions as to permit the handle 13 to move therein through a distance necessary to shift one enlarged end of the slot 18 into and out of engagement with the pin shank 15, in order to get either a close or a loose bite in the jaws 10 and 11. (Compare Figures 3 and 4.) A socket 21 is provided in the handle member 13 with its axis extending in alignment with a channel 22 `also in the handle member 13, the axes of the socket and channel 'being at substantially right angles to the axes of the fulcrurn pin 15. Slidably mounted in the channel 22 is a locking rod 23 having an upturned operating end or piece 211 slidably mounted in a recesss 25 opening through the side wall of the handle 13 and exposed for manipula tion.
The jaws 10 and 11 are provided with teeth 26 and 27, which incline in opposite directions for the purpose of securing a better biting effect and to enable the pliers to be operated either forwardly or reversely. The jaws are also preferably provided with the fine teeth 28 and 29 at the outer tip ends thereof to facilitate gripping objects that the teeth 2G and 27 would not be suitable for.
A coil spring 30 is secured between the two handle members and acts to hold the jaws 10 and 11 apart, and to return the jaws to open position after the handles 12 and 13 are released from pressure in the hand of the operator. The handle 12 is preferably provided with a square slot, or a slot hav ing hat walls 31 to fit snugly against the flat sides of the shank to the pin 15, whereby to avoid turning of the pin in the device. The turning of the pin l5 would interfere with the proper relation of the shank with the slots 18, 19, 20.
In the use of the device, the pliers are in the usual manner gripped in the hand, and the handles 12 and 13 squeezed together, thus causing the jaws to rotate in the pin 15 and to close together about the object to be turned or manipulated. Instead ofhaving to openthe pliers also by hand, as is customary, the spring will attend to this function, the operator simply releasing the pressure ofthe hands` upon the handles 12 and 18; whereupon the pliers may be moved to obtain a new grip `and thereafter squeeze and rotate it as before.
Now it will be clear from Figure 3 that the locking rod 23 intersects the slot 18 and its end occupies the socket 21 by which the rod is made steady. This rod acts to confine the shank l5 of the fulcrum in the enlarged end 19 of the slot. In this condition, the pliers will have a close bite. By shifting the fulcrum pin to the other slot end 20, as shown in Figure 4, the jaws will have a loose bite. This shifting is rendered possible by withdrawing the locking rod 23 to the position shown in Figure it, in which the slot neck 18 is uninterrupted, and the flat shank 15 may pass freel therethrough. The latch rod 23 may be frictionally fitted in the channel 22, so that it will remain either in the inner or the outer position. This latch rod provides for the easy and quick chan e of adjustment.
The han les may be provided with screw driver ends, as shown, and a wire cutter 32 may be provided in conjunction with the handles, if desired.
A slot 33 is provided in the jaw 11 to receive the sprin cured in the sot by a screw 34 or other fastening. This slot 33 is so devised that the spring 30 will not come beyond the surface of thepliers, and will aford full protection to the spring.
It will be obvious that many cli-anges in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts could be made, which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do noty mean to limit the invention to such details, except asV particularly pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An improved pliers comprising a pair of jaws and handles, one of said handles having an elongated slot therein, a ful'crum pin passing through the crossed handles and adapted to engage in one or the other end of said slot, and a locking device mounted in one of the handles and movable into and through the intermediate portion of the Slot to confine the pin in the one or other end of said slot.
2. An improved pliers comprising pivotcd crossed handles and jaws, a fulcrum pin having a Hat shank non-rotatably held in one handle and passing through the other handle, said other handle having an elongated slot therein with enlar ed ends for adjustably receiving said flat shank, and a sliding latch rod movably mounted in the handle having the slot and adapted to extend across the intermediateportion of the slot.

An improved pliers, comprising crossed pivotcd handles and jaws, a fulcrum pin carried'by one handle, the other handle having an elongated slot with aconstricted narrow intermediate neck, enlarged opposite end portions for selectively receiving said fulcrum pin, said last mentioned aw also having a registering socket and channel on opposite sides of the intermediate portion of saidslot, and having a recessopening through the face of the handle, and a sliding latch rod frictionally fitting in said channel and adapted to extend across the ,i
intermediate portion of the slot and enter said socket, said pin having an out-turned end portion moving 1n said recess.
