Description
MayZO, 1930. EFERRlS 1,759,739
BIRD CAGE PERCH (PLEANER Filed Dec. 3. 1928 WITNESS: ATTORNEY.
Patented May 20, 1930 UNITED STATES FANNIE FERRIS, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
BIRD-(lAGE-PERGH CLEANER Application filed December 3, 1928. Serial No. 323,450.
This invention relates to perch cleaners generally and has particular reference to a novel implement for cleaning the removalfle perches of bird cages.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder for supporting a cleaning agent in such relation with a perch as to enable thorough scraping of the latter with- Outbringing the hands of-the person using the holder into contact with either the cleaning agent or the accumulated substance to be removed from the perch.
Another object of the invention isto provide a cleaning device which may be manufactured from inexpensive material, and which is functionally reliable as there are no parts which might accidentally become out of working order.
A further object of the invention .is the provision of a cleaning device having a holder to which abrasive material is appropriately attached for removing from the perches of bird cages substances which have become hardened thereon and which substances, when not removed, injure the feet of the bird using theperches, and also tend to render cages unsanitary.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of I parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly.
pointed out. in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
j which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my cleaning device, showing the method of inserting a erch therein.
igure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken 16, the operator grasps. the handle 22 in one 90 centrally of the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical transversesection on the line 44:"of Figure 2.
Referring particularly to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my perch cleaner in itsentirety, which includes a" split cylindrical or tubular resilient body 11, which may be of any suitable material such as springy metal. The edges.
,13 of the respective ends 14 of the shell .12
' passage of the element.
are flared outwardly as at 15, in order to facilitate movement of the cylinder 11 back and forth on the perch 16 being cleaned,
while the longitudinal edges terminate short of each other to provide an opening 18 which extends the length of the cylindrical body, which edges are rolled or beaded as at 19 for ease of movement when the device 10 is used by turning the same during the cleaning operation. 7
In the preferred embodiment ofthe invention, an abrasive material 20, such as a strip of .emery cloth or fine sand paper, is illustrated on'the inner walls of the body 11, the same being adhesively secured thereto to maintain said .material securely in position; but the cleaning device is not limited to this exact abrasive material, as other substances of a spongy or fibrous nature may be utilized with good efiect, without departing 7 from the invention, particularly when a fluid such as Water is utilized.
The device is used advantageously with a handle or hand grip 22 which may be of wood, and of general cylindrical configura- 7 tion, While a metal ring or ferrule 25 encircles a reduced portion or neck 26, which receives a fastening element 27 therein for holding said handle rigid with the cylinder 11. This cylinder is press countersunk at 28 thereby forming a projection 29 which is seatedin a. recess 30 in the top of the neck 26 and which receives said fastening element, there being an aperture 31 in the projection 29 for the Perches are removable from bird cages and f are generally cylindrical in shape to provide a suitable gripping surface for the feet of the birds housed in the cages. To clean a perch hand and with the other hand inserts the perch endwise through the cylinder 11 for back and forth movement thereinuntil clean.
In order to .facilitate escape of matter removed from a perch, the latter may be sup- 9 ported vertically by placing one of its ends .on any convenient surface, .a finger of the operator being placed on the opposite or top end, thereby allowing the matter removed to fall gravitationally to the supporting surface, as
the cylinder is reciprocated verticallg'. Progress of the cleaning operation is o served through the slot 18.
My perch cleaner may be sold in the assembled position and requires no further attention for removing any of its parts or assembling the same. The cleaning material 20 may however be renewed when required. To clean the device, the cylinder 11 may be agitated in water, or held in running water. The bore of the cylinder, or its slot 18, may
be used to suspend the device on any available pin or the like, when not in use,
- The split body being constructed of a springy material tends to normally contact to fit upon a perch of a relatively small diameter, but perches of larger diameters may be cleaned by merely expanding the split body to accommodate'the same. y
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that parts of the improvements may be used without others, that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set I forth nor to anythin less than the whole of my invention limite only by the appended claim. I
What is claimed as new is A perch cleaner comprising a single tubular outer wall of resilient material, said wall having a split throughout its length, abrasive material carried on the inner surface of said wall, a right angularliy disposed handle exteriorly mounted on sai wall, a fastening clement attaching the latter to the handle, said wall adapted to movably receive a perch therein, and outwardly flared edges on the respective ends of the tubular member.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
-. FANNIE FERRIS.
