Description

May 6, 1930. w. P. SCHISSLER 1,757,543
VISE
Filed Aug 2, 1929 Patented May 6, 1930 UNITED STATES WILLIAM P. SCHISSLER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN VISE Application filed August 2, 1929. Serial No. 383,063.
This invention pertains to Vises, and has primarily for its object to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive, and effective vise for securely gripping smooth, round objects, such as fruit jars and the like, and objects of irregular contour, which are difficult to grip in conventional vises.
Incidental to the foregoing, a more specific object is to provide a vise having floating clamping jaws carried by toggle links whereby maximum pressure of the jaws is obtained with minimum effort, and the jaws readily adjust themselves to an object of any contour to effect secure gripping.
lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in'the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a detail section through one of the gripping jaws taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 comprises a base consisting of a pair of longitudinal angle irons 2 connected by the end brackets 3 and 4, respectively, which are secured to the angle irons by rivets or other suitable fastening means. A light supporting plate 5 is secured to the irons 2 between the brackets 3 and 4:, which serves to support the object to be gripped.
Pivotally mounted on a stud 6 carried by the end bracket 3 is a pair of links 7, having pivotally connected to their opposite ends the opposed gripping members 8, the gripping faces of which are concave and provided with facings of soft material, such as fabric, leather, rubber, or the like, to effect a secure grip upon an object without marring its surface.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the gripping jaws are securely anchored to the base through links 7 pivotally connected to one end thereof, while the opposite ends of the members 8 have pivotally connected thereto the links 9 which, in turn, are pivotally connected to a block 10 swivelly mounted upon one end of a screw 11, which is threaded in a swivel block 12 carried by the end bracket 4.
The outer end of the screw 11 is provided with a conventional manipulating handle 13.
As best shown in Figure 3, it will be noted that the gripping members 8 are formed of angle iron to which are secured the jaws 8.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily noted that a very simple and effective vise has been provided which can be constructed largely of stock material and which will effectively grip a round, smooth object, or one of irregular contour without marring its surface, and it is found that the same has particular advantage in gripping such objects as fruit jars and the like during the capping or uncapping operation.
I claim:
1. A vise comprising a base, a pair of links pivoted horizontally upon said base, gripping jaws carried by said links, a block pivotally mounted 011 said base, a screw threaded into said block, a block swivelly carried on one end of said screw, and links connecting said gripping jaws with said swivel block.
2. A vise comprising a base consisting of a pair of spaced longitudinal frames, end brackets connecting said frames, a pair of links pivotally connected to one of said brackets gripping'jaws pivotally connected to said links, a block pivotally mounted on the other of said brackets, a screw threaded into said block, a block swivelled on one end of said screw, and links connecting said gripping members With said swivel block.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand atMilWaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of W'isconsin.
VILLIAM P. SCHISSLER.
