A stationary horizontal plate 6, carrying a movable plate 6', is mounted between the tops of the side frames, these plates having apertures 7 and 7 to permit operation and carrier is mounted for adjustment on platform 8. This card engaging member is preferably provided with two series of perforations 13, which may be en aged selectively on a pair of pins 14 mounte on the platform 8. The card carrier may be secured in adjusted position on the platform 8 by means of a thumb nut 15 which engages a screw on the platform 8 penetrating a slot 16 in the card carrier. The card carrier-may be a one piece aflair, or as shown, may comprise two pieces 17 and 18 secured together. In this case the member 18 has a shoulder portion 19 along its reared e. The rear edge of a card 20 is adapted to 'e engaged by this shoulder 19 and moved toward and a substantial distance between the printing couple 4, 5.
The levers 12 are mounted on a rocker shaft 21, which'is connected, by means of a pitman lever 22. secured to shaft 21, link 23 and lever 24, which is pivoted to the side frame at 25, to a rotating cam 26 which is mounted on a shaft 27. Cam 26 enga es with a cam roller 28 mounted on lever 24. spring 29 secured to a pin 30 on the side frame and to a lever 31 on the rocker shaft 21 constantly maintains the cam roller 28 against the surface of cam 26, and yieldingly tends to place the levers 12 in the retracted position shown in full lines in the drawings.
The cam 26 is of such shape that as it revolves the levers 12 and the card carrier will be moved toward and from the printing couple. The forward position-of the parts are indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 2, and it will be noted that the card 20 is entered a substantial distance between the printing couple. When the card enters between the printing couple, the rubber roller 5 presses the card upwardly against the printing cylinder. Cam 26 may be connected by any suitable gearing (not shown) to any conventional driving means for the printing cylider. This driving mechanism forms no part of the'present invention and is well understood in the art.
The arrangement of the mechanism is such that each card is advanced by the carrier toward and a substantial distance'between the printing couple at the same speed as the speed at which the surface of the printing cylinder revolves. Adjustment of the speed of the feed of the card may be accomplished by turning the screw 32 of the pitman lever 22. Preferably toward one side of the machine, a guide plate 33 is adjustably mounted on the plate 6 by means of a screw 34 and thumb nut 35, and at the other side of the machine, a guide plate 36 is mounted for limited sidewise adjustment with plate 6' by means of a thumb screw 37.
The operation of the feeding mechanism will be apparent from the above. The side uides 33 and 36 having been adjusted to the width of the card, and the card carrier having been adjusted on the platform 8 in accordance with the length of the card, the cards to be printed are placed singly and successively in front of the shoulder 19 in the carrier when the carrier is in retracted position. The operation of the machine causes the carrier to reciprocate toward the printing couple, and to feed the card a substantial distance between the printing couple, at which time the card will be positively engaged between the printing couple and its feed through the machine will be continued thereby, the printing cylinder leaving its impresslon on the card.
Meanwhile, the reciprocating card carrier is reciprocated into retracted position, in which positionit is adapted to receive the next card. With a duplicating machine equipped with feed mechanism of the character described, it is 'only necessary to operate the machine by the usual power, either hand or electric or otherwise, and to feed the cards onto the carrier to obtain accurate registration of print on heavy cards.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and various different embodiments of this invention could be made 7 without departing from the scope thereof, it is understood that all matter contained in the 7 above description or shown in the. accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is: 1
1. The combination with a printing couple comprising a rotary printing cylinder and a coacting impression roller, of means independent of but correlated with the printing so cylinder for advancin a card toward and a substantial distance etween the rinting couple, said means including a car carrier reciprocable on one side of said printing couple only and along a path substantially at 8 right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinden.
2. The combination with a printing couple comprising a rotary printing cylinder and a coacting impression roller, of means inde-" pendent of but correlated with the printing cylinder for advancing a card toward and a substantial distance between the printing couple, said means advancing the card at the same speed as the speed at which the surface of the printing cylinder rotates, said means including a card-carrier reciprocable on one side of said printing couple only andalong a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder.
3. The combination with a printing cou 1e comprising a rotary printing cylinder .an a coacting impression roller, of a pair of oscillating levers, a card carrier connected to said levers for reciprocation thereby, means for oscillating said levers, whereby a card engaged by the carrier is advanced toward and a substantial distance between the printing couple and means for adjusting the speed of movement of said oscillating levers. no
4. The combination with a printing couple comprising a rotary printing cylinder and a coacting impression roller, of a pair of oscillating levers, a card carrier connected to said levers for reciprocation along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder, and
means for oscillating said'levers, whereby a card engagedby ward and a substantial distance between the printing couple, said means including a rotary cam and mechanism connecting said cam with said oscillating levers, said mechanism including an adjustable pitman rocking lever, whereby the speed of movement of said oscillating levers with respect to the speed of rotation of the cam may be varied.
6. The combination with a printing couple comprising a rotary printing cylinder and a coacting impression roller, of a card carrier and means for reciprocating the cardcarrier to advance a card toward and to move the card a substantial distance between the printing couple, said card carrier being reciprocable on one side of said printing couple only and along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder.
The combination with a printing couple comprising a rotary printing cylinder and a coacting impression roller, of a reciprocating platform, a card-carrier adjustably mounted on said platform, and means for reciprocating the platform to advance a card toward and to move the card a substantial distance between the printing couple, said platform being reciprocable on one side of said printing couple only and along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder.
8. The combination with a printing conple adapted to grip and feed a card inserted therebetween, of card-feeding means operating to advance a card toward and to move the card a substantial distance between the printing couple, whereby the card-feeding means acts alone to feed the card into initial engagement with the rinting couple and the feeding means and the printing couple act together and simultaneously to feed the card an initial substantial distance through the printing couple and the printing couple acts alone to complete the feed of the card therethrough, said card feeding means including a card carrier reciprocable on one side of said printing couple only and along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder.
9. The combination with a printing con la comprising a rotary printing cylinder an a coacting impression roller, of means independent of but correlated with the printing cylinder for advancing a card toward and a substantial distance between the printing couple, said means including a platform reciprocable' along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder and a card engaging member mounted for adjustment on the platform, whereby said means may be adjusted for cards of different sizes.
10. The combination with a printin couple comprising a rotary printing cy inder and a coacting impression roller,'"of a cardcarrier including a platform reciprocable along a path substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said printing cylinder and a card engaging member mounted for adjustment on the platform, whereby the card-carrier may be adjusted for cards of different sizes, and means for reciprocating the card-carrier to advance a card engaged thereby toward and a substantial distance between the printing couple.
