This invention relates in eneral to valves and, more particularly,.'to improved means for operating valves.
While in the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated, the valve is of the well known rotary plug type, it will be understood that the operating mechanism disclosed is susceptible of suflicient modification, within the terms of the invention, for adaptation to other forms of valves.
The principal objects and advantages which characterize the present invention reside inthe provision of an improved valve and valve operating means therefor; the provision of an improved rotary valve and improved valve operating means therefor; the provision in a valve of an improved construction of the valve proper and,-more particularly, an im- 'proved construction of valve operating means, preferablyfor detachable association therewith; the provision of an improved valve operating mechanism which is in the.- nature of a complete unit capable of applicaorms of valves or in use for the valve when the same is tion to various embodiment in manufactured.
This invention is further characterized by the provision of'an improved valve operating unit which serves to afforda compact power transmission means which permits of large valves being operated by hand where a relatively small amount of space is .availableand 'wherein the application of an ordinary lever l justment of a valve opening by multiplication factured or which may be appliedto valves already in use and which also'will serve as a gland member for retainingthe valve stem packing in place.
The foregoing objects and advantages, and such other advantagesa's may appear orbe pointed out as this description proceeds, are' attamed by the several structural embodi ments of this invention illustrated in the drawings, in which:" i 1 Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a' valve constructed in accordance with this-invention;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and first to Figures 1-3 inclusive, there is provided a valve body 10 having a" transverse fluidpassageway 11, said passageway being formed bythe extensions 12, 12 and suitably secured to p pes lines (not shown) by the provision of annular valves 13, 13. The body 10 is provided with a centrally substantially taperingbore seat 1 1: and a strong pocket 15, the lower end of the body,
as viewed in Figures 1 and2', being provided with an' annular valve 16 to-which 'is secured a cover plate 17 by the provision of bolts 18,
18 having nuts 19 i 7 The valve member is in the form of a taper ing plug 20 and is inserted into the body 10 when the cover member 17 is removed, said valvemember engaging the seat 14 and having a transverse passageway 21 adated to register with the fluid passageway 11 or controlling the flow of fluid through. The valve member 20 is maintained snugly onits seat by the provision of a helical sprmg- 22 engaging an axial stud 23 on the bottom of the valve member 20 and also engaging a button 24 whichvseatson the member 17 /The upper end of thebod 10 is open, and the adjacent ortion' of the valve member 20. is reduced in 'ameter as at 25 where it passes shoulder 28, and an annular packing element 29 is received on said'shoulder and extends over against the reduced portion 25 and hence onto an annular shoulder 30 formed by thus reducing the diameter of the valve member.

that it will afford a fluid-tight joint at the upper reduced end of the valve member.

The casing 31 includes a substantially cylindrical wall reduced in diameter to afford an annular flange 33 which fits between the extension 25 and the body 10 adjacent to the packing 28 and thus forms a glandfor engagement with said packing.
v The outer end of the casing 31 is closed by a removable plate 34, said plate being secured in proper relation on the casing 31 by the provision of bolts 35, 35 having nuts 36, 36.
The plate 34 is provided with an axial opening 37 in which is journaled an operating shaft 38, and having a hand wheel 39 fixedly secured thereto.
v The shaft 38 projects into the casing 31 and carries a pinion 40, the latter being conveniently formed integrally with the shaft 38' and having a reduced axial extension 41 which is received in the recess 27 in the valve stem 26.
The pinion 40 forms a sun-gear about which the planet gears 42-42 arerotatable said gears 42 being revolubl mounted on shafts 43, 43 fixedly secured in a spider 44, the latter-having a squared opening 45 for reception of the squared valve stem 26., The
spider 44 is preferably formed with radialguide members 46, 46 which serve to engage the inner surface 47 of the casing 31 and thus prevent rattling and other vibration of the spider and at the same time to reinforce this structure. As will be seen in Figure 3, the spider is conveniently enlarged as at 48, 48, to accommodate the shafts 43, 43. j
To complete the planetary gearing, the inner surface of the casing 31 .-is milled or otherwise formed to provide an internal ring gear 49 with which the planet gears 42, 42 mesh. Y J In order to securely removably. mount the valve "operating mechanism as a unit on the valve, the casing 31 is provided with lugs 50, 50 through which bolts 51, 51 pass, said bolts end of the valve stem so that said pinion will be supported in operation. However, under some conditions, it is desirable to force the valve 20 off. its seat against the tension of the spring 23, an example of this being where it is desired to introduce lubricant between the valve and its seat, the relatively slidable connection of the valve stem 26 and member permitting of such displacement of the valve member. Reference may be'had to my copending application, Serial No. 88,737, for an example of a plug valve and it will be obvious that the valve member 20 may be provided with passageways, as shown in said application.
Referring now to the form of the invention shown in Figures 4-7, both inclusive, it will be observed that the valve structure is substantially the same as that in Figures 13, and it will, therefore, be unnecessary to describe the valve structure per se in detail.

The plate 78 is rovided with openings for receiving bolts 9, having nuts (not shown) said bolts serving to retain the plate with its flange 77 impinging upon the packing 76. The valve shown in Figures 8 and 9 is provided with limit stop means which conveniently include an arcuate recess 82 cut in the stem 80 and will afford increased power, enabling manyx valves to be readily manually operated and also permitting of a relatively fine degree of adjustment of the valve member.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claimvasvnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an operating unit for valves and-the: like in combination with the valve body and valve stem projecting therefrom, -a casing and containing and forming a part of valve operating means enga ing said stem, a packing for said stem, sai casing engaging said packing and serving as a land therefor.
