This invention relates to improvements in machines for working on paper, card-board and the like, and is directed particularly to improvements in machines for simultaneously. deckling andfscorin'g, creasing, or slitting paper and-similar materials. It has become common practice to deckle or bevel theedges of paper to obtain artistic ef+ fects .by means of rotating cutting tools which acton said edges. According to this invention I provide means for. co-operating with the deckling or beveling mechanism referred to whlch is adapted to act on the material simultaneously with said mechanism for scor .ing, creasing, or slitting the'same.
.To this end I am enabled to produce a sheet having deckled edges which is scored or creased for folding or a plurality of bevelled edged sheets which are severed by the slitting action. y I V The invention is capable of broad application but for purposeslof disclosure will be described in connection with the accompanying'drawings 'inwhich f Fig. 1 is aplan view of an apparatus having the features of the. inventionembodied therein. Referring to the drawingsthe invention 1 and 2 tatably supported upper-and lower shafts 3 and 4. .These shafts have adjustable there along coacting pressure rolls or wheels R which are adapted to feed a'sheet of paper or the like forwardly from a feed table F to a'delivery table D, the said shafts being suitably geared together by'gears G for uniform rotation. 'Eitherone of said shafts may be utilized as the driving shaft for the'other and may carry a driving pulley 6 or one of them may be gearedto a motor. A suitable plates 20 by clamping screws-28 as shown 1 which function to draw the'parts together so that they securely embrace the shaft which;
guide 8 is adjustable'on the table, and
serves to guide a sheet 'ina feeding movear orrrce deckling tool T which is rotated by a motor Y" M suitably connected theretoby gears.
The stands 1 and 2 are secured to the ends of a transverse bed member B and the upper shaft 3 is preferably adjustable up and down in the stands so that said shaft may be moved towards and away from the lower shaft 4. The structure just described is similar to that shown and described in the U. S. patent to Joseph N. Fountain No. 1,607 ,193 dated November 26, 1926, and need not be gone into.

v The upper shaft which is rotatable as aforesaid I make use of according to my invention for supporting a slitting, creasing, or scoring member S which hasa peripherial working edge for coacting with a roll S rotatable therebelow in abracket 16'. 1 The rolls S and S"may take any form desired and may be arranged to either score, crease or slita web of paper passing therebetween. 4
According however to one form of the invention I have shown the roll S as having a scoring or creasing edge and the roll-S as having a groove to co-operate therewith so as to crease or score a sheet of paper.
Accordingto one novel feature of the in-v vention the upperroll S is made so as to be separableand also adjustable along the shaft so that it may be removed or afixedthereto accordingly as it is desired to score, crease,
and slit a sheet intermediateits side edges. In the form .shown the upper roll Scomprises a pair of upper semi-circular side plates 18 and a lower pair of similar plates 20. Each pair of plates has secured therebetween as by dowels 19 or the like inner halfdisc-1ike tool membersQt the. outer peripherial edges of which are formed to have a circumferential periphery suitable for scoring, creasing, or slitting a web.

Opposite ends of each of the members 24: are arranged so that one end such as 24 will extend beyond the plates 18 and 20 to form a tongue. The shorter end of the members serves in conjunction with the plates to which they are secured to provide a slot forreceiving the said tongues. As will be seen the extension or tongues 24 of the lower member ext-ends upwardly between the upper plates 18 while the extension 24' of the upper member extends downwardly between the lower plates 20. lVith this arrangement the pairs of plates may be assembled in one way only so as to insure that the outer working edges of the tool members 24 are in accurate register. The lowerroll S inthe form shown has a substantially sharp scoring periphery and is journalled for rotation in the bracket 16 which is movable along the bed and secured thereto. in various positions of adjustment by meansiof a clamp 32 and screw 34;. The roll S may be formed so as to co-operate with the upper rgll S for a slitting, creasing or scoring action and the bracket may be clamped to the bed in any desired manner but obviously will be arranged and adapted to position the I roll S so that it will co-operate effectively with the upper roll S. An adjusting screw A in the bracket 16 is adapted to abut the upper side of the bed for raising or lowering it so that the rolls may be brought to bear against one another with varying degrees of pressure to thereby obtain various scoring or creasing effects. In operation the roll S is secured in. the desired location to the shaft 3 and the bracket 16 is fixed to the bed therebelow so that as a sheet of paper is fed forwardly by the rolls it is acted upon by the rollsS and S for a scoring, creasing or slitting action according to the type of rolls employed.
The rolls may be located at various distances from the deckling or bevelling mechanism and as many sets of rolls may be emplayed as may be desired to the end that simultaneously with the deckling action the paperor material is also scored, creased or severed by slitting.
. By means of the mechanism described it is not only possible to simultaneously score,
crease or slit the deckle material so as to comprisingin combination, a bed, a shaft r0.- tatable thereabove, a bracket adjustable on avoid separate working operations but especially where a scoring operation is performed the rolls function in co-operation with the rolls It to feed the material forwardly and to maintain it in alignment with the guide 8.

As before statedthe form of the rolls S and V S; may be varied within wide limits accordingly as it is desired to score, crease or slit the material simultaneously with the deck- .ling operation and means of the novel construction the rolls may be readily and easily aflixed to the rotatable shaftin any desired location. The bracket 16 of course may be moved so that the roll S may co-operate with the upper roll and by means of the adjustment provided the roll S may be moved towards and away from the upper roll so as to obtain any desired degreeof pressure. 7
. The apparatus may be changed or modified within wide limits to adapt the lQVel features of the invention to various conditionsan'd to accomplish various results without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and therefore "I prefer to be limited by the appended claims ratl' er than by the foregoing description of the preferred form of the invention.
What I claimand desire 'tosecure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, pairs of semi-circular plates, each having shaft embracing apertures, .means for clamping the pairs of plates togethersabout a shaft, sheet working semi-circular members secured between the plates of each pair having their outer end portions arranged so that one end of the member of one pair fits between the plates of the other pair.
2. An apparatus of i the class described comprising in combination, pairs of semicircular plates having shaft embracing apertures, hubs extending outwardly from said plates and means for securing the hubs together to clamp the plates to a shaft, semidisc-like members secured between themembers of each pain-each of said members having relatively short and long'ends at opposite sides thereof whereby there is provided interfitting tongues and sockets. foreach pairof plates. 1
3. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, pairs of semiscircular plates having shaft embracingapertures. and means for clamping the pairs to a shaft, -semi-dis'c-like sheet working members fixed between the plates of each pair, opposite sides of the membersdisposed respectively below and above the sides of the plates to provideja socket and a tongue at opposite sides. of each :pair of plates whereby :the tongues and sockets may interfit when-the pairs of plates are clamped to a shaft.
4. An apparatus of the class described said bed, a roll on said shaft and a roll coacting therewith journalled on said bracket and means associated with, said bed and bracket for moving said bracket and roll carried thereby towards and away from the roll onsaid shaft. W
Anapparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a bed, a pair of shafts adjustable on said bed, coacting rolls for'acting on a sheet fed forwardl by'said feed rolls, one of which is mounte on one of said shafts and the other of which is rotatable on said bracket and means associated with said bed and bracket for moving said bracket and roll carried thereby towards and away from the shaft carrying said roll.
6. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a bed, a pair of shafts rotatably supported thereby, co-operating feed rolls on said shafts for feeding a sheet, a bracket adjustable on said bed having a bearing portion between said shafts, coacting rolls for acting on a sheet fed forwardly by said feed rolls one of which is mounted on one of said shafts and theother of which is rotatable on the bearing portion of said bracket and means asociated with said bed and bracket whereby said bearing may be moved to move the roll therein towards and away from the other.
