In this way there is provided a container for the flexible ladder which is of a minimum number of parts and of such material that it can be cheaply and economically manufactured, the plates 28 and 27 being preferably formed of light sheet metal.
The device is adaptable for use on private homes and other buildings which are not of sufiicient height to warrant the erection of expensive fire escapes.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fire escape of the class described adapted for use in connection with a building having a supporting portion, comprising: supporting members secured to said supporting portion and projecting downwardly therefrom in spaced relation; a bar connecting said supporting members adjacent their lower ends; a plate swingably mounted at one edge on said bar; side members projecting outwardly from one face of said plate at its opposite ends, the outer edges of said side members being curved; a curved cover plate swingably mounted on the free edge of said first mentioned plate and adapted for swinging into engagement with the curved edges of said side members; a flexible ladder mounted on said supporting members, said first mentioned plate being swingable into horizontal position and adapted for support ing said flexible ladder; an engagement member secured to and projecting upwardly and outwardly from the upper end of said supporting members; a notch bearing arm mounted on one of said side members and engageable with said engagement member for releasably locking said first mentioned plate in horizontal position.
2. A fire escape of the class described adapted for use in connection with a building having a supporting portion, comprising: supporting members secured to said supporting portion and projecting downwardly therefrom in spaced relation; a bar connecting said supporting members adjacent their lower ends; a plate swingably mounted at one edge on said bar; side members projecting outwardly from one face of said plate at its opposite ends, the outer edges of said side members being curved; a curved cover plate swingably mounted on the free edge of said first mentioned plate and adapted for swingnvsavee ing into engagement with the curved edges of said side members; a flexible ladder mounted on said supporting members, said first mentioned plate being swingable into horizontal position and adapted for supporting said flexible ladder; an engagement member secured to and projecting upwardly and outwardly from the upper end of said supporting members; a notch bearing arm mounted on one of said side members and engageable with said engagement member for releasably locking said first mentioned plate in horizon tal position, said cover plate having a notch formed in its free edge for accommodating said notch bearing arm, the edge of said cover plate being swingable upon movement of said first mentioned plate to horizontal position into engagement at its free edge with the under surface of said engagement member.
