This invention relates to improvements in guards for tool handles and has for an object the provision of a guard which may be detachably secured to an axe or other tool handle for the protection of the latter- Another object of the invention is the provision of a guard for this purpose which is easily applied; may be stamped or cut from a single piece of sheet metal at a single operation, which is so constructed that it will remain in place without danger of slipping.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates an axe handle, while 11 indicates the body of the axe.

The shield which is designed to be applied to the helve immediately adjacent the axe blade is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, being stamped or cut asshown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The blank so formed is shown at 12 and is provided along ately adjacent the openings 14 and 13 so that when the guard or shield is tightened upon the handle, the points will be forced into the Wood.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention what is claimed is A guard for tool handles formed from a single sheet of metal, trapezoidal in contour, to conform to the shape of said handle, said sheet being bent upon itself to provide a sleeve adapted to be inserted over the handle of the tool in abutting relation with respect to the tool, the corners of said sheet having apertures therethru in alignment on one side of the handle, clamping bolts extending thru the apertures to clamp the sleeve upon the handle and inwardly extending penetrating elements formed on the sheet adjacent the tool and adjacent one of said clamping disks,

one edge with holes 13 and along its opposite edge with holes 14, all of which are adapted for the reception of bolts or screws 15. Holes 13 are preferably rectangular so as to hold the bolts or screws against turning.

The blank 12 is shaped as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings so as to engage around the axe handle, while the bolts or screws 15 serve to tightly clamp the guard or shield in place. As a further securing means there is provided penetrating elements 16 which are struck up from the blank 12, preferably at the same operation that the blank is out.
