Another object of this inventionis to provide a table of the character mentioned having a simple, inexpensive and easily oper- 2 ated control. 1 p p It is another object of this invention'to provide a leaf-operating mechanism for a table of the character mentioned adapted to be set to positively hold the leaf in operating position.
The various objects and featuresof my invention will be bestand more fully understood from the following detailed description, throughout which reference ishad to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the table in its normal or unextended position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the table showing it extended or with the extension leaf in operating position. Figures 3,4 and 5 are diagrammatic views illustrating various positions of the table parts. Fig. 3 illustrating the position of the partswhen the table is unactuated as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4 illustrating the position of the parts when the extension leaf is elevated and the dowel means ready to be engaged and Fig. 5 illustrating the dowel means engaged'and the extension leaf positively set in operating position. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the mechanism taken substantially as indicated by line 66 on Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the parts shown in Fig. 7 being a view taken by line 7-7 on Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detailed view showing the lift mechanism with" the parts positioned as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken as indicated by line 9-9 on Fig. 8. and Figures 10, 11 and 12 are detailedviews illustrating various positions of the control and locking mechanism.
The construction provided by my invention is intended primarily for application to orembodiment in a table construction comprising two maln or end sectlonsA and B andcentral extension leaf L. For the purpose of facilitating a clear understanding of my invention, Ihave set forth a simple enibodiment of. the invention as applied to a table of the type just mentioned. Inthis table the main or end sectionsA and B are slidably carried by a frame 10 having sides 11. The sides 11 of the fralneare' mortised or notched to receive the central extension leaf L when the partsare positioned as shown in Fig. 1. The frame 10 may be supported on suitable legs12 in a manner common to table construction and any suitable construction may be employed inslidably mounting the end sections on the frame. The construction provided by this invention includes,generally, means 13 interconnecting the end sections A and B of the table top so that they operate together making it possible to operate the table from one end, leaf-lifting means'le operable to raise and lower the extension leaf L and control means 15 for the operating means 14.
In" the drawings I have disclosed a simple form of means 13 for interconnecting the main top sections A and B. This form of construction includes a pair of centrally pivoted levers 17 carried by a stationary central part of the frame 10 and links connecting the ends of the levers with the movable top 7 posed plate having vertical guideways 25- for guiding the leaf-carrying bracket 21 vertically. The bracket 21, operating member 22 and guide plate are arranged together or one next to the other, and the bracket 21 has pins 26 projecting from it through the cam slots 24 in the operating member and into the guide ways 25 in the plate 20. lVith this arrangement horizontal movement of the operating member 22 causesthe cam slots 24 1 and pins 26 to cooperate so that the leaf-car- 'rying bracket 21 is moved vertically. The operating member 22 is guided horizontally from the plate 20 by guide pins 27 which proj ect from the plate 20- through horizontally disposed guide slots 23 in the operating member 22. The cam slots 24 are diagonally disposed. For instance, formed at an angle of about 45 degrees, and are proportioned to give the leaf-carrying bracket 21; the. desired vertical movement.
The control means 15 provided by my in- V vention provides a releasable connection between one of the end sections of the'table and the operating member 22, and a releasable lock for setting the operating member 22 against movement with reference to the guide plate 20.
The control meansincludes, generally, a
manually operable control rod 30 having a handle 31 on its outer end and a head. or projection 32 on its inner end, a flange 33 projecting from the operating member 22 and adapted to cooperate with the head 32 of the operating rod, and a latch 34 carried by the flange 33 for locking the operating member with reference to the guide plate and arrangedto be under control of the rod 30.
' In the preferred form of the invention, the control rod is mounted on the under side of one of the end sections of the table by means of suitable mounting brackets 35 and may be a plain rod having one end turned to form the handle 31Hand the other end turned to form the projection or head 32. It will be obvious that this construction permits of the parts being arranged and proportioned so that the handle 31 is conveniently located and can be easily operated. Theflange 33 is preferably horizontally disposed and is formed on or attachedto the operating member 22 to project horizontally therefrom.
The flange 33 has adeep notch37 formed in it from dne end to receive the head 32 of the control rod. The'head 32 of the control rod is adapted to engage the inner end 38 of the notch 37 to operate the member 22 outwardly or in a direction to cause lifting of the extension leaf, and is adapted to be operated into a recess 38 in one side of the notch. at its inner end to operate the member 22 inwardly or in a direction to lower the extension leaf. The head 32 of the control rod is adapted to be moved into .andiout of operating position in therecess 38 by turning of the rod 30.
The latch 34 is pivotally carried by the flange33 and is adapted to cooperate with a fixed projection or lug 39. The lug 39 may be on any stationary part. For instance, it may be provided on the guideplate 20 as shown in the drawings. The latch has a head 40 designed to engage and hold the lug 39 and has a notch 41 which registers with the notch 37 in the bracket when the latch is in operating position. The head 40 of the latch is designed to cooperate with the lug 39 to throw, the latch to the open position shown in Fig. 3 as the mechanism is moved to the out position. wherethe leaf is lifted. This automatic movement of the latch causes the head 32 of the operating rodto be automatically turned or moved into the recess 33 at the inner end of the notch 37. A stop 45 may be provided on the flange 33 to stop the latch 34 in the operating positions shown in Figures 4 and 5.

The head 32 cooperates with the inner end 38 of the notch 37, so. that continued outward movement of the end sections causes the operating member 22, to which the flange 33 is attached, to be operated horizontally until, the extension leaf is lifted to the plane of the end sections; The parts are proportioned so that the leaf does not lift until the end sections have separated enough to allow the leaf to be lifted into positionbetween them. 1
7 When the extension. leaf has been fully lifted, the handle 31 is operated causing the latch 34 to be thrown into cooperative engagement with the lug 39 so that'the operating member 22 is locked against movement and the head 32 of the control rod is in position to move freely outward through the notches 37 and 41. The end sections A and B are then moved inwardly, causing the leaf to lower to its unactuated position as shown in Figures 1 and 3, whereupon further, inward movement of the end sections will be stopped until the handle 31 is operated to disengage the head 32 from the recess 38. When the head is released from the recess the top sections A and B can be furthermoved inwardly to their original or unactuated position as shown in Fig. 1.

A table construction including slidable end sections, a vertically movable central leaf, operating means for moving the leaf vertically, including an actuating member, and a control for the operating meansineluding a manually operable control part, a flange on the actuating member having a notch to receive the control part, and a lock- I ing latch pivotally carried by the flange and operable by the control part when in the notch of the flange, the latch having a notch to register with the notch in the flange.
