The main object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for molding concrete by means of which concrete material may be very rapidly and uniformly settled or compacted in the form, even when the mix is what is commonly designated as dry.
A further object is to provide an apparatus which renders practical the very rapid filling or setting and tamping of concrete material in forms with a minimum of manual labor required.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentar perspective view of a molding apparatus em odying the features of my invention, the same being illustrated in connection with a form for a column, and illustrating the manner of using or manipulating the same.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved vibrating unit partially in vertical section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the form for a column or pillar, 2 the concrete material and 3 the reinforcing elements arranged therein. The concrete material is a suitable mixture placed in the form and my improvements permit the filling of the same without directly tamping the material as is usual practice.
To settle or compact the material under the form uniformly throughout, I provide a motor housing or casing 4: within which the rotor 5 is supported. The rotor shaft 6 is 49 carried by suitable bearings in the housing, one of which is indicated at 7 This rotor shaft is provided with an unbalancing weight 3 so that as the rotor revolves a vibration of the casin is set up. This vibration is preferably in excess of three thousand R. P. M. as
it is found that a more effective tamping or settling of the concrete results.
The motor housing is provided with feet 9 at one end thereof to which I bolt the bar 10 having a head 11 disposed transversely relative to the motor caslng, this head constituting a form engaging member through which the vibrations of the motor casing are transmitted to the form when the member 11 is held against the side of the form.
The vibrating unit is suspended by means of a tackle designated generally by the numeral 12, the lower pulley or block 13 of which is provided with a link 14 which is engaged with a suspending book 15 on the upper end of the lever 16. This lever 16 is pivoted on the upwardly projecting ears 1 7 on the motor on the motor casing. The lever is provided with the downwardly pro'ect-ing arm 18 which is disposed at the side 0 the casing in opposed relation to the form engaging member 11. The lever 16 has a handle or handpiece 19 at its lower end.
A thrust arm 20 is mounted on the side of the casing and provided with a resilient pad 21 with which the lever engages, so the operator is largely relieved of the vibrations and at the same time the impact or form engaging member 11 may be urged against the side of the form.
By means of the handpiece the vibrating unit may be swung about on its suspending cable to engage the form in various positions relative to the mass of material therein. It is found, however, that in practice this rapid vibration sets up a vibration through substantially the entire body or mass of material and it is very uniformly and evenly compacted throughout, even when a very dry mixture is employed. Further, the material is so compacted andsettled that there are substantially no voids about the reinforce members or the coarser aggregates, no matter what the position of the same may be within the concrete mass.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a simple embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations possible as I believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising an electric motor casing, a rotor within said casing provided with a' shaft having an unbalancing weight thereon, a barlike form engaging member disposed transversely of and rigidly secured to said casing,
a lever pivotally mounted on the uppervend of said casing with one end projecting downwardly at the side of said casing and in opposed relation to said form engaging member and provided with a handpiece, its other end being provided with a suspending hook, and a thrust arm on the side of said :asing provided with a resilient supporting pad for said lever.-
2. In an apparatus of the class described comprising an electric motorcasing, a rotor .within said casing provided with a shaft having an unbalancing weight thereon, a
form engaging member rigidly secured to said casing, a lever pivotally mounted on the upper end of said casing with one end projecting downwardly at the side of said casing and in opposed relation to said form engaging member and provided with a hand piece, its other end constituting a suspending means, and a resilient thrust member on said casing with which said lever coacts.
3. The combination with an electric motor casing, of a rotor within said casing provided with a shaft having an unbalancing weight thereon, a form engaging member on said casing, a lever pivotally mounted on said casing, one end of said lever being disposed in opposed relation to said form engaging member and provided with a handpiece, the other end of the lever providing a suspending means, and a resilient thrust member interposed between said lever and said casing.
4. The combination with an electric motor casing, of a rotor within said casing provided with a shaft having an unbalancing weight thereon, a form engaging member on said casing, a lever pivotally mounted on said casing, one end of said lever being disposed in opposed relation to said form engaging member and provided with a handpiece, the other end of the lever providing a suspending'means, and a thrust member interposed between said lever and said casing.
5. The combination of a casing, a rotor within said casing provided with an unbalancing weight, a form engaging member on said casing, a flexible suspending means for said casing, a handpiece for manipulating ancing weight, a bar-like form engaging member disposed transversely of and rigidly secured to said casing, a handpiece pivotally mounted on said casing, and a thrust member on said casing'provided with a resilient pad with which said handpiece coacts.
' 8. The combination of a casing, a rotor within said casing provided with an unbalancing weight, a form engaging member secured to said casing, a handpiece-pivotally mounted on said casing, and a resilient thrust member on said casing for said handpiece.
9. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a casing, a rotor within said casing provided with an unbalancing weight, a barlike form engaging member disposed transversely of and rigidly secured to said casing, a lever pivotally mounted on said casing to project downwardly at the side thereof, said lever having a suspending hook at its upper end and a handpiece at its lower end, a flexible suspending means with which said hook is engaged, and a resilient thrust member interposed between said lever and said casing.
10. In a molding apparatus, the combination of an electric motor casing, a rotor within said casing provided with an unbalancing weight,a form engaging member on said casing, a lever pivotally mounted on said casing, one end of said lever being disposed in opposed relation to said form engaging member and provided with a handpiece, the other end of the lever providing a suspending means, a cable connected to said suspending means, and a resilient thrust member interposedbetween said lever and said casing.
11. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a motor casing provided with a form engaging member, a vibrating means within said casing, means for suspending said casing at the side of the form with its engaging member in engagement with the form, and a handpiece for manipulating said casing on its said suspending means, there being a resilient element between said handpiece and easing.
12. In an apparatus of the class described, the combinationof a motor casing provided with a form engaging member, a vibrating means within said casing, means for suspending said casing at the side of the form with its engaging member in engagementwith the form, and a handpiece for manipulating said casing on its said suspending means,
there being a resilient element between said handpiece and casing.
13. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a vibrating unit provided with a form engaging member,- means for suspending said vibrating unit with its said form engaging member in engagement with the form and movable thereon, and a handpiece whereby said vibrating unit may be ma nipulated on its said suspending cable. 1 In witness whereof I have hereunto set my land.
