COMBINED DOLLS CARRIAGE AND SOUND PRODUCING MEANS March 18, 1930.
Filed Jan. 28, 1928 INVENTOR Lows Marx Patented Mar. 18, 1930 iurrsn s LOUIS MARX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed January 28, 1928.
This invention relates to a combined dolls carriage and sound producing means.
The principal object of my invention centers about the provision of a carriage or wheeled vehicle for dolls and the like combined with a sound producing means operative for simulating the cry of an infant, the sound producing means or crier being associated with the dolls carriage so that a wheeled movement of the carriage results in the operation of said sound producin means and in the production of a series of intermittent cries intended for association with a doll receivable by said carriage.
A further prime object of my invention relates to the combination with a dolls carriage of a self-contained sound producing unit which is mounted on the carriage for a'bodily movement and which is connected to the running wheels thereof so that a wheeled movement of the carriage produces a bodily movement and operation of said sound producing means. A still further prime object of the invention resides in the provision of a combined dolls carriage and voice producing means or crier embodying means which may be set by the child at will for rendering the sound producing means operative or inoperative, so that the carriage may be wheeled with or without the production of a voice simulating sound, to suit the playing proclivities of the child.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one to the other, as hereinafter more particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which show the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the combined dolls carriage and dolls Crier of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a view thereof taken on an enlarged scale in cross section in the plane of the line 22, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe sound pro- Serial No. 250,153.
ducing means on a still further enlarged scale, and I Fig. 4 is a view thereof taken in cross sec tion in the plane of the line 4.4, Fig. 2.v
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, I show a preferred embodiment of my invention as comprising a wheeled vehicle or carriage generally designated as Av and a sound producing means generally designated as B. mounted for a bodily movement on the carriage A and operated by a wheeled movement of the carriage for producing a simulated crying of a young infant or other appropriate sound to be associated with a doll or similar manikin receivable by said carriage A.
The carriage A may be of any standard design or construction and comprises a body 10 for receiving a doll, a frame generally designated as 11 for resiliently suspending or supporting the carriage 10, the said frame including the front and rear axles 12 and v 13 respectively on which are journaled the front and rear wheels collectively designated as 14:, 14. As usual, the carriage is provided with a push and pull handle frame 15.
The sound producing means 13 comprises a self-contained unit mounted on the carriage A so that a wheeled movement of the carriage produces a bodily and operative movement of the sound producing unit. In one of the preferred constructions the self-contained sound producing unit B is mounted directly on so as to be rotatable with one of the axles of the carriage and preferably on the rear axle 13 so as to be readily accessible to the playing child. This sound producing unit B is preferably fixed to the axle 13 by providing said axle with a U-shaped bend 16 arranged preferably medially thereof, which bend forms a seat for the sound producing unit B. The unit B is preferably encased in an outer enclosure 17 forming a holder for the sound producing unit, which enclosure is notched at opposite sides 18, 18'for, receiving the axle 13; and the said casing or enclosure 17 is provided at its top with a transverse strap 19 which is active for holding the unit B in seated position. If desired, parts such as 20, 20 of the side wall of said casing or enclosure 17 may be inturned for supporting engagement with the outside wall of said sound producing unit B, as clearly shown, for
7 example, in Figs. 2 and 30f the drawings.
The sound'producing unit B is preferably of the type used in the art for producing a simulated crying of an infant and'known as a mama'voice or crier. 'In accordance .w th an approved form of des1gn, such crier comprises a tubular casing having a side wall 7 '21 made, forexample, of ordinary cardboard mailing tube, a perforatesheet'metal wall 22 V. at one end thereof and an imp'erforate sheet metal wall 23 at the other end thereof; The] sheet metal wall 23 defines a cover for the casing 21 andal'so forms an airtight cover for one end of a collapsible bellows bag24 "which may be made of a rubberized fabric or the like, the other endof the bellows-bag being closed bya weighted member 25 and an outer cover section 26, the. said outer cover section 26 being clamped onto the. end of the "bellows bag forafixing the latter" onto the weight 25, as clearly shown, for example, in,
Fig. 4 of the drawings. A sound producing element in the formof areed 27 is provided,
and this reed is preferably attached to the 7 "'weight 25 and communicates by means of'a port 28 in the weight 25 with the bellows chamber, the said reed extending through an orifice 1n the outer cover sect1on26, as
clearly shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
' By means of thisrecited construction it will be apparent that a' wheeled movement imparated to the carriage A results in the rotation of the sound producing unit B; and
this rotation effects an oscillating movement of the weight 25 in the casing 21 of the sound producing unit, the movement of the weight .causingan alternate distendi'ng and collapsing of the bellows bag 24 and a consequent production of a series of intermittent sounds sound producing means B so that the same or cries simulating the voice of a young infant. By this means, therefore, the playing child, by imparting either aback and forth movement to theccarriage A or a continuous movement of the carriage in either direction, in simulation of a mother mov ng a carriage to induce a baby to sleep,"causes the desired operational movements of the sound producing means:
It is desired to control the operation ofthe may bejrendere'd operative or inoperative at will,'thus permitting-the child to move the carriage without effecting the-operation of 1 the sound producing unit. ThisI accomplish by providing a switch means ,whichmay be readily set or controlled by the child, such switch means comprising a rod'29 freely finger 32 which is adapted to be engagedby an arm 33 which is swivelly mounted as at 34 on the strap 19. The arm 33 is movable from r the full line position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings; and when said arm 33 is in the dotted line position it is caused to engage the top finger 32 of the rod 29, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, this engagement preventing the weight controlled or operated sound producing means from moving when the unit is rotated. Movement of the switch member-33 to the full line position, however, frees the rod 29 and consequently permits a' gravitational movement of the weight 25 in response to the bodily or rotating movement-ofthe sound 7 producing unit B.
The manner of main, be fully apparent from the above dev making and operating the. p
combined carr age and sound producing ap- "s5 paratus of my present invention will, in the tailed description thereof. It will be further e apparent that I have provided a combined carriage and mama voice or crier 'unit designed so that standard-orders maybe a readily 'mounted on carriages of *standard construction to produce an effective and easily workable combination. It will be further seenthat the crier unit is mounted for quick and convenient accessibility and isprovided with means which maybe operated ina facile way by the child for controlling the operav tion of the crier at will,,ithe-sound producing means being rendered operativeor inoperativeto suit the requirementsor desires of service.
' It will also be apparent that while I have 2 shown and described my invention; "in the preferred form, many changes and modifications may be made-in the structure disclosedwithout departing ,from'the spiritiof the in-. vention, defined in the I'following claims.
