means of the character referred to with driving shafts for the parts comprising said means and a shaft common to and directly connected to these driving shafts for operating the same.
Another object is to provide an improved attachment of the character referred to hav-' in advantages over those constructed hereto ore as regards simplicity of construct-ion,
manner of operation, accuracy, and flexibility of operation.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of a standard milling machine showing the improved attachment applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, and looking toward the left in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken from Fig. 2 and looking toward the left with respect to Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic, perspective view of the driving connections.
The milling machine shown is of standard construction and includes the usual base 1 supported by a screw 2 for vertical adjustment, a tool 3 supported over the base for rotation about a vertical axis, a driving gear 4 arranged in a protective casing 5, a casing 6 containing a suitable electric motor for driving tool 3 and gear 4, a guard 7 for the MACHINE 6, 1926. Serial No. 86,395.
driving connection between the motor and gear 4, and a table 8 supported by base 1 below tool 3 for forward and backward movement with respect thereto, all of Whichparts are of common construction and have only been shown in suflicient detail to enable those skilled in the art to understand the manner in which they are related to the respective parts comprising the improved cam attachment and the driving or operating means therefor.
A member 9 is secured to table 8 by means of bolts 10 and 13 and is provided with bearings 14 and 15 for a worm shaft 16 provided at one of its ends with a beveled gear 17 and having its other end 18' shaped to receive a suitable wrench. A work-holding table 19 is fitted upon member 9 for rotary movement 1 about a vertical axis, the table being provided on the underside thereof with a worm wheel 20 meshing with and being driven by worm shaft 16. Member 9 is further provided with bearings 21, 22 and 23 for a shaft 24 on which are loosely mounted beveled gears 25 and 26 arranged in constant mesh with beveled gear 17 a clutch member27 being splined on shaft 24 and arranged for interlocking engagement with either of the beveled gears 25 and 26, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4, whereby the rotation of shaft 16 may be reversed to reverse the direction of rotation of the workholding table 19. For the purpose of shifting clutch member 27, a cam 28 is arranged in an annular groove with which this member is provided, and is fixed to a pin 29 loosely mounted in member 9 intermediate beveled gears 25 and 26, an arm 30 being also fixed to pin 29 and provided at its free end with teeth meshing with similar teeth formed on the underside of a lever 31 pivotally mounted on a pin 32 fixed to member 9, the arrangement being such that upon movement of the lever to its extreme position to the right, as shown in Fig. 4, a clutch member 27 will engage beveled gear 26 to connect the sameio shaft 24 for rotation therewith, while movement of the lever to its extreme position to the left will effeet engagement of the clutch member withbeveled gear 25 to connect the same to shaft 24 for rotation therewith, the
clutch member moving out of interlocking engagement with either of the beveled gears before it enters into interlocking engagement with the other. i
From the foregoing it will be seen that-- upon rotation of shaft 24, the work-holding table 19 may be rotated in either direction upon the shifting of clutch member 27 by means of lever 31. The work or cam blanks 33 may be secured to the work-holding member or table 19 by means of bolts 34 passing through these blanks, the heads of the bolts being arranged in the usual T-shaped slots which the housing is provided. Intermediate its ends, shaft 39 is provided with a worm wheel 42 fixed thereto and meshing with a worm shaft 43 journaled in a bearing 44 with which the housing is provided and being driven from gear 4 through a similar gear 45 fixed to a shaft 46, and shaft sections 47 and 48 connected, respectivelv. to shaft 46 and worm shaft 43 by universal couplings 49 of any suitable construction.
Secured to one end of base 1 by means of bolts 50 is a shelf or bracket 51 upon which a table 52 is supported for rotation about a vertical axis, bracket 51 being provided with an annular inwardly extending flange 53 upon which table 52 rests, the flange being arranged, as more clearly shown in Fig.
1, between table 52 and a worm wheel 54 secured thereto in any suitable manner, the
worm wheel thus acting to hold table 52 in operative relation with respect to bracket 51, while permitting free rotation of the table with respect to the bracket. A shaft 55 1s journaled in bracket 51, as shown, and 1s provided with a worm portion 56 meshmg with worm wheel 54, shaft 55 being further pro-' vided at onefend thereof with a worm wheel 57 meshing with a worm portion 58 with which the vertical driving shaft-39 is provided, as more clearly shown in Fig. 5. A master cam 59is secured to table 52 by any suitable means such as a bolt 60 passing through the axis of the cam and the vertical axis of rotation of the table, and other bolts 61 for holding the' master cam against rotary movement with repect to the table about bolt- 60 as a center. As more clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a'vertical bolt 62 provided at its lower end with a roller or cam follower 63 i's supported by a bracket 64 fixed to the A adjacent end of table 8 by meansof bolts 65, roller 63 beina arranged to engage the periphery of master cam 59- and being held in masses close engagement therewith by means about to be described.
A weight 66 is suspended by chains 67 trained about pulleys 68 and 69 carried by plates 70 secured to base 1 by means of bolts 71, and pulleys 72 and 73 rotatably mounted upon pins 74 fixed in the end of table 8, the chains being fixed at -75to plates 70, the arrangement being such that table 8 is urged to the right, as viewed in Fig. 1, and the roller or cam follower 63 held in close engagement with the periphery of the master cam by a force equal to twice the weight of weight 66. By using the chain and arranging the pulleys 68, 69, 7 2 and 73 as shown in Figs. land 2, the resultant force acting to urge table 8 to the right is coincident with the longitudinal center line of the latter, bolt 62 and roller 63 being arranged with their vertical axes coincident with this longitudinal center line, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. From the foregoing it will be seen that the forces acting on table 8 to control the movement thereof are equally distributed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the same and that through the roller or cam follower 63, the master cam 59 acts directly upon table 8 to effect forward and backward movement thereof and of the cam blanks 63 in exact accordance with the shape of the master cam.
An adjusting feed screw 76 threaded into a member 77 secured to member-.9 by means of bolts 7 8 is journaled at its outer end in a bearing 79 secured to table 8 by means of screws 80, the feed screw being provided with a suitable collar 81 and an indicating dial 82 arranged on opposite sides of bearing 79 to prevent axial movement of the feed screw with respect to the bearing so that upon rotation of the former in either direction by means of the crank or wrench 83, member 9 and the work-holding member or table 19 and cam blanks 33 secured to the latter are cam blanks 33 adjusted with respect to tool 3 by applying a wrench to end 18 of shaft 16 and rotating the same in the desired direction, feed screw 76 providing means for adjusting the work longitudinally with respect to table adjusted longitudinally with respect to table 8. Clutch member 27 is then engaged with 1 aither of the beveled gears 25 or 26, dependmg upon whether a right or left cam is to be made, and the usual driving motor of the machine located in casing 6 started to drive tool 3 and the common drive shaft 39 for shafts 24 1 and 55, the relation of the various worm shafts and worm gears being such that work table .19 and master cam 59 are rotated at exactly the samerate.
The improved cam attachment may -removed by moving bolts and 13, housing 36, bolts 50 and 65, and the housing 83 for gear 45 and shaft 46. 1
From the foregoing it will be seen that an improved attachment has been provided which may be readily applied to a milling machine of standard construction to adapt the same for the cutting of cams, that a common drive shaft 39 is provided for the respecstive driving shafts 24 and 55 for the master cam and work table, the common drive shaft 39 being directly connected to the latter, that the feed screw 76, clutch member 27 and actuating lever 31 therefor and the exposed end 18 of worm shaft 16 provide means for adj ustin the work with respect to the tool and e ecting rotation of the work in either direction for the cutting of right or left cams, that the action and arrangement of the roller or cam follower 63 is such that the master cam 59 acts directly upon table 8 to effect the forward and backward movement thereof, and that the improved cam attachment has advantages over those constructed heretofore as regards simplicity of construction, flexibility of operation and accuracy.
