ROAD SIGN Filed Feb. 20, 1929 7 JF III!" 6: w'
o I nu Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER A. RIDA, OF WEST HAVEN, AND HOWARD A. PERRIGO, OF WHITNEYVILLE,
- CONNECTICUT ROAD SIGN Application filed February 20, 1929.
This invention relates to improvement in road signs. In some cities, particularly in narrow streets, traific is allowed to move in only one direction and parking is allowed on only one side of the street, but at intervals the direction of traffic and side for parking are changed. This necessitates the changing of signs and involves considerable time and expense.
The object of this invention is to provide a sign Which may be readily turned so as to present opposite faces, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a road sign constructed in accordance with our invention;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the same; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the plate or disk for the top of the sign.
In carrying out our invention We employ two brackets 5 and 6, herein represented as bands adapted to be secured around posts or trees. Whatever the form of the clampingmeans, they comprise an upper arm 7 and a lower arm 8 which are adapted to receive and support studs 9 and 10 formed at opposite ends of a sign 11 which is free to turn in the supports. Secured to the top of the sign is a. disk or plate 12 formed with notches 13 and 14 to receive a latch 15 which is pivoted to the top-support 7. The sign will be turned to indicate the direction of trafl'ic and when so turned will be locked in position by the latch 15. When it is desired to change the sign it is only necessary to move the latch, which may be readily done by means of a stick with a hook in the end, so as to disengage it from the disk, permitting the sign to be given a half-turn, and when so turned the latch will fall by force of gravity into the other notch and thus lock it in position. This latch is arranged so high that it cannot be readily reached without a suitable implement, so that the signs are not liable to be tampered with and changed without authority. We thus provide a road sign which may be read- Serial No. 341,416.
ily changed when necessary and which will be firmly locked in its proper position.
We claim:
1. A road sign, comprising a pair of horizontal supports, a sign pivotally mounted in said supports and provided at its upper end with a disk having a plurality of notches, and a gravity latch pivoted to the top support and adapted to engage either of the notches in said disk.
2. A road sign, comprising a pair of horizontal brackets provided with outwardly-extending arms, a vertically-arranged sign provided at opposite ends with studs engaging with said arms and supported thereby, a disk secured to the upper end of said sign and provided on opposite sides with notches, and a pivotal gravit r latch mounted in the upper arm and adapted to enter either of said notches, whereby the sign is locked in different positions of adjustment.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification.
WALTER A. RIDA. HOWARD A. PERRIGO.
