UNITED STATES PATENT oFFrcE FEDEBIOO TBOGCOLI, BOSTON, IASSACHUSETTS min-mime DEVICE This invention relates to improvements in hair drying devices and one of the objects of the invention is to provide means for drying the hair upon the head of a person rapidly I and evenl I am aware that variousdevices for drying thehair have heretofore been emplo ed, including fans for delivering a blast o air upon the head, hose or other conduits for conducting a blast of heated air upon the head,
and devices in the nature of a helmet, adapted to enclose the upper portion of the head of the person, havin an interior shell through apertures in w ich air is projected upon the head of the person. Fans and hose are capable of projecting the air only u 9n a portion of the head of the person, w 1le he met devices confine the air about the head, and if the air is heated are exceedingly uncomfortable to the person.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair drying device which will project a plurality of unconfined blasts of, prefera 1y heated; air upon such diiferent portions of the head of the person as will rapidly and evenly dry the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide the respective air delivery devices with distributing means which will divert the air delivered from the air "delivery devices in such a manner that practically all of the hair of the head will be dried simultaneously.
A further object of the invention is to provide adjustable air distributing devices which will enable them to be located at different distances from the head of the person and which also desirably are so constructed as to permit the respective blasts of air to be projected in such difierent directions 10 as may be necessary or desirable.

The assembled hair drying mechanism i1- lustrated in Fig. 1 comprises a hair drying device having an inlet conduit 1, which is connected at one end to, and preferably telescopically mounted upon, the delivery pipe 2 of a blower 3 adapted to supply air under pressure to the hair drying device.v By reason of this construction the blower may be mounted upon a portable base and the conduit 1 vertically adjusted upon the delivery pipe of the blower so that the hair drying device may be located at such distance from the floor as may be required to position the hair drying device properly with respect to the head of the person seated in a chair.
Suitable means may be provided for heating the air which is supplied to the hair drying device and this, as illustrated in Fig; 1, comprises an electrically heated coil 4 which is located within the delivery pipe 2. Obviously other usual means may be employed for heating the air.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 the blower 3 is mounted upon a suitable pedestal or base 5 which constitutes a convenient mounting where the device is tobe used in a hairdressing parlor or a barber shop. Obviously the device may be ortable.
Where the device is use in barber shops or hairdressing parlors having means for an plying a conduit with heated or unheated air under pressure, the hair drying device embodying the invention ma be suitably attached to such conduit. 11 the preferred form of hair drying device illustrated in the drawing the inlet conduit 1 therebf communicates with a plurality of branches arranged res ectively to deliver the air upon the back an sides of the head of a person. The central branch comprises a conduit 6 rovided with an air delivery nozzle 7 whic desirably is telescopically and rotatably mounted upon the branch 6 and is provided at its end with a preferably conoidal deflector -8 of considerably less diameter than the diameter .of the nozzle 7 and which preferably extends at an angle to the axis of the nozzle 7. By reason of this construction a portion of the air which is projected through the nozzle 7 will be diverted upwardly through thedeflector 8 along and over the top of the head, while the remainder, and larger portion, of the air will be projected upon the back of the head and downwardly along the neck of theperson. By rotatably adjusting this device about its axis, however, the nozzle 8 may be positioned to project the air further down upon the neck of the person. By slidably moving the nozzle 7 the mouth thereof may be placed at a greater or less distance from the head of the person so that a desirable distribution and strength of blast may be provided.
The other branch members, which diver e from the central branch '6 and which desirably lie in substantially the same plane th ere-' 12 which are telescopically mounted upon the branches 9 and 10 and are also rotata ly adjustable relatively thereto. The ends of these air delivery devices are curved toward each other and present mouths 13 and 14 lying in parallel planes upon 0 posite sides of the position of the head of the person. By moving the air delivery members longitudinally upon the branches 9 and 10, the position of the mouths 13 and 14 may be se arated to greater or less distances, thus modifying the strength of the blast projected therefrom by reason of the greater distance from the head. Furthermore, such adjustment permits the head to be moved. toward or from the position of the nozzle 7. As the nozzle 7 is also adjustable the position of the several air delivery devices may be so adjusted as to produce a sub stantially uniform rate of drying of the hair.
The mouths 13 and 14 of the air distributing devices desirably are rovided with deflectors 15 which, in the orm illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, are curved and extend transversely across and in angular relation to the axes of the mouths 13 and 14. These deflectors serve to pro'ect a orti'on of the air toward the rear of t e hea as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, while the main portion of the air is projected upon the side and forward portion of the head. The air delivery members 11 and 12 preferably are also capable of rotation upon the branches 9 and 10 res ectively so that the direction in which the last of air is rojected upon the head may be varied vertica y as may be required or desired.
By reason of the construction above described the blasts of air which are projected upon the head of the person are unconfined so that the moisture which is absorbed from the hair is rapidl dissipated throughout the room. The mec anisms for delivering air upon the head are-such that a substantially even distribution is made over the entire head and the hair dried quickly and uniformly. If, by improper positioning of the head relatively to the hair drying device, or by variations in thickness of the hair, some ortion dries more slowly than others, the elivering members may be so adjusted as to project the blast directly upon such more moist portion so that it will be dried ra idly. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hair drying device comprising a conduit to receive air under pressure having a' plurality of air delivery branches lying in substantially the same axial plane arranged respectively to project blasts of air upon the back and opposite sides of a persons head and means in the respective side branches for distributing the air projected therefrom, and means for causing the blast upon the back of the head to pass both downwardly along the neck and upwardly along the top of the head.
2. A hair drying device comprising a conduit to receive an under pressure having air distributing branches havin their ends arranged to project unconfined blasts of air upon opposite sides of a persons head, and a nozzle to project a blast of air upon the back of the head provided with means for deflecting a portion of the air delivered therefrom in an angular direction with respect to the axis of the mouth of said nozzle.
3. A hair drying device comprising a conduit to receive air under pressure having air distributing branches having their ends arranged to project unconfined blasts of air upon opposite sides of a persons head, a nozzle to project a blast of air upon the back of the head provided with means for deflectinga portion of the air delivered therefrom in an angular direction with respect to the axis of the mouth of said nozzle, and means for adjusting said nozzle whereby the diverted portion of said blast of air may be projected upwardly along the top of the head or downwardly along the neck of the person.
