invention relates to boring tools and to the reaming of holes has special reference toexactsizes. v i a More particularly'the invention relates to an expanding reamer and mandreL.
Oneinup omntobj ect of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of:
reamer wherein ashellreamer having fixed blades may be used on an expanding mandrel lo and be itself expandedby the expansion of said mandrel,
A secondimportant object of theinvention 18113.0 provide an expansionshell reamer cap-H able of use in connection-with an expansion mandrel of standard dimensions, the mandrel acting as the expansion member ion-the rearner.w 3 a A third important object of the. invention is to; provide a novel arrangement of expand, 20. ingwmandrel and expanding shell reamer for use therewith wherein thereamer is prevent; ed' from rotationrelative; to the mandrel by interengaging means on the reamer and man dreL. I
With the above and: other objects in view as: will behereinafzter. apparen the nv n tion' consists general of certain novel dewas or construction and cembin tionof parts hereinafterfully described, i lus rated inthe aceoinpanying; drawings and specifie callyiclaimed;
In the accompanying drawings like characr parts in I the ters of reference indicate like sevenal'views, and: I 35. .Figure 1 is a sideelevation of the learner and mandrel assembled. Figure :2 is .an-uend view thereof.

lar extremity open at its free end. The wall of the cylindrical tubular portion is slotted from its'free end through the wall back to the bottom of the tube, the slots being shown at 13. Internally the inner end of this tubular; portion is screw threaded and the outer or open end is tapered to receive a tapered plug 1i having its innerend 15 threaded to screw into the threaded end of the tube. The outer end of this plug is provided with a wrench square 16 so that the screwing in of this plug may be accomplished and thus the mandrel expanded.
Fitting on the portion 12 is a shell reamer having a cast alloy body 17 in which are held the blades 18 projecting at one. end to form a face reamer and terminating short of the other end of the body. Around the last mentioned end of the body is fitted a steel band '19; and in this end, under the band, are
formed notches 20 which engage, pins 21 on the part 12 so as to keep the reamer from roa tating when in position for use. The other,
or face end of the body is provided with slits 22 between the blades and these slits are preferably arranged out of alinement with the slits in the part 12.,
In use the reamer is slipped, on the part 12 and the mandrel expanded just sufficiently arbor has other utilities than its use in con nection with an expansion shell reamer. In
machine shop practice cases arise, in machining where it is necessary to hold a reamer rigidly on the arbor or mandrel due to the nature of the set-up and the work to be done.
In such cases it is common to drill and tap a hole in a standard arbor, place the shell reameron the arbor and screw a bolt carrying washers to bear against the end of the shell reamer into the tappedhole. When this is done it is not possible to ream to the bottom of a blind hole but by using the arbor cf the Pltflfii invent-4 .1 an rdmarr r t ll r ent r of the fixed size type may be positioned on the arbor to project beyond the end thereof and then the arbor expanded to grip the reamer firmly so that reaming may be done to the bottom of a blind hole, the arbor holding the tool firmly in place under all working conditions and preventing the reamer from pulling OE and spoiling either the work or the tool. 1
There has thus beenprovided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified. v
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is: p
