My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lock nuts and important objects of the invention are to provide a lock nut of the character described which embodies all the elements necessary for securely looking it' upon a suitably threadedbolt; which develops a maximum holding power against any but intentional release regardless of the load against which it is applied; which maybe positioned without liability of stripping or distorting the screw threads of the nut itself or the screw threads of the associated bolt, and can, therefore, be repeatedly applied and removed.
Further objects of theinvention are to provide a lock-nut of the type stated which is simple in its construction and arrangement, inexpensiveto manufacture, positive in its operation, and generally superior in point of durability and efficiency.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, theinvention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention hereinafter disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing 1 repre sents a hexagon nut having a screw thread connection with an associated bolt 2. I
- The bottom or seating end of the nut 1 is formed with a groove l, which extendstangentially, from the diametric center of the bore of the nut 1 to the periphery of the latter. The inner wall 5, of the groove 4, is not disposed parallel to the outer groove wall 6, with the exception of the outer end portion 7 thereof. The inner groove wall 5 is mainly disposed at an angle with'respect to the outer groove wall 6, whereby; the groove 4 gradually increases in width from its inner end to adjacent to the outer end thereof, and provides a seat 8 for engaging the outer end 9, ofa locking bar 10, to maintain the latter in the releasing or unlocking position.
The locking bar 10 is mounted in the groove 4 and is longitudinally shiftable in the latter. The bottom side of the locking bar 10 is .7 formed with a recess 11, which is disposed adjacent to the inner end thereof. vAn ear 12, preferably swaged from the bottom end of the nut 1, extends into the recess 11 and prevents the disengagement of the locking bar 10 from the groove 1in the nut 1.
A comparatively large pocket 13 is formed in the seating end of the nut 1. The inner end of the groove 4 opens into the pocket 13, and an opening 14 establishes communication between the bore of the nut 1 and the pocket 13.
The inner end of the locking bar 10 is provided with an enlarged head 3 formed with a curved end 15 and a gripping jaw 16. The head 3 is disposed in the pocket 13 and its gripping jaw 16 extends into the opening 14;.
A flat spring 17 is mounted in the pocket 13 and the fre end thereof engages the curved end 15 of the locking bar head 3. The normal action of the spring 17 tends to force the locking bar 10 outwardly in the groove 4 to the locking position.
The outer end 9 of the locking bar 10 is formed with a slot 18, which extends parallel to the axis of the nut 1 and which is provided to facilitate the engagement of a suitable implement when shifting the locking i bar 10 to effect the locking and releasing of the latter in the manner to be described.
When in the locking position, the outer end 9 of the locking bar '10 is disengaged from its seat 8, and the gripping jaw \16 projects. through the opening 14 and engages the threaded bolt 2, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
The nut 1 may be rotated on the bolt 2 in the direction to mount the same on the latter I when the locking bar is in the locking position, but it cannot be rotated in the reverse direction to effect its release. 7 When the nut 1 is in the locking position, as stated, any releasing movement thereof, will cause the gripengaging said locking bar to secure the latter in the releasing position, and means for -mamtaining said locking bar in-said groove.

Y Toirelease the nut 1 from the bolt 2, it is first necessary to pull the nut 1 a bit tighter, so as to disengage the gripping jaw 16 from any possible indenture formed in thebolt 2 during the locking operation.
The locking bar 10 is now shifted inwardly in the groove 4 to the position shown in Figure 2/ This inward movement will cause the gripping jaw 16 to clear the bolt 2, and further allow the locking bar end 9 to engage in the seat 8 of the groove wall 5, whereby the a locking bar 10 will be maintained in the released position. V
By engaging the locking bar seat 18 by any suitable implement, the locking bar 10 may be readily shifted to the releasing position.

The modified form of nut 19 illustrated in Figure 5, differs from the preferred form only in that the same is provided at its seating end with a peripheral flange 20 to provide .ample stock, particularly insmall sized,
nuts, to allow for the construction of the groove 4, and pocket 13 therein, in the manner and for the purpose set forth relatively to the preferred form.
