Description

Jan. 7, 1930. R. l. VINCENT METHOD OF DECORATING WALLS- Filed Oct. 14, 1927 NVENTOR Rqber'i Vinden ATTORNEY 'WUNESSES taken approximately on the line 6 6 Patented Jan. 7,1930
UNITED STATES ROBERT I. VINCENT, GF BATAVIA, NEW YORK METHOD or DECORATING WALLS Application led October 14, 1927. Serial No. 226,187.
surface of wall-forming elements,`such as plaster board or wall board, prior to its erection, as contradistinguished from the practice of applying the wall board or plaster board to the framework and subsequently decorating the same by hand painting or wall paper applied thereto.
yThe invention furthermore comprehends a method of decorating walls which embodies the features of simplicity, economy and efficiency, in addition to obtaining effectual results in a more expeditious manner. p
With the above recited and other objects in view, the following description and accompanying drawings set forth one embodiment of the invention and the appended claims define the actual scope thereof.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wall forming element with an uncolored liquid film applied thereto and illustrating the first ste of the method;
ig. 2 is a face view of the same with a multi-colored liquid film applied thereto while the first film iswet and intermixed to produce numerous color shades, illustrating the second step of the method;
Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a plastic coating applied over the intermixedflms and illustrating the third step of the method;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken there- Jilarough approximately on the line 4-4 of ig. 5 is a face view of the finishedem-` bossed decorative surface, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view therethrouglfi eferring to the drawings by characters of reference, the method constituting the present invention broadly consists in decorating the a surface of a wall or wall-forming elements, such as plaster board or wall board, 10 by first applying an uncolored liquid film l1, such as water, to the surface in any desired manner, such as by brushes, flowing, spraying, or otherwise, ness on said surface, as illustrated in Fig. 1. A c olored design or pattern or a multi-colored liquid film 12 such as aniline dyes is subsequently applied thereover while the first film is wet or before the same dries sothat the films intermix or blend into each other to produce numerous shades of color, as illustrated in Fig. 2. v
The method further comprehends the application of a plastic coating 13 such as a mixture of plaster of Paris, water and glue (the glue serving as a binder or adhesive) over the intermixed films, the plastic coating being applied to the desired thickness in any suitable manner, while the design or film 12 is damp. As a further step the method contemplates semi-hard form or' prior to the actual hardening or setting of the same, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, it being understood that the plastic coating over the wet intermixed lms absorbs the colors and shades therethrough and causes their penetration through f so as to leave a liquid film or wetembossing of the plastic coating while in a the plastic coating. Due to the fact that the 80 colors, shades or other ornamentation penetrates and extends completely through the plastic surface, the same cannot be destroyed'.
The embossing of the plastic coating may" be accomplished in any desirable manner, such as by hand, by embossing rollers or by any other suitable mechanical means.
ile preferably the decoration is accom-1 plished prior to the application of the wall-'1*' forming sections to the port, there is no intention of being restricted thereto as it is obvious that the process may be framework or sup'- 90 I accomplished after the wall is erected.
What is claimed is:
l 1. A method of decorating walls consisting in applying a multi-colored liquid filmthereto, and then applying an absorbent plastic coating thereover to cause the colors to be ab;` sorbed and extended throughout the thick-"` ness of said plastic coating.
2. A method of decorating walls consisting in applying a multi-colored liquid film thereto, and then applying anu absorbent plastic coating thereover to cause the colors to be 5 absorbed and extended throughoutithe thickness of said plastic coating and finally embossing the plastic coating before the same has set. i
3. A method of decorating walls consisting in applying an uncolored liquid lm to the Wall surface, then applying a multi-colored liquid film thereto, then applying an absorbent plastic coating thereover to cause the colors to extend therethrough, and finally embossing the plastic coating before the same has set.
4. A method of decorating walls consisting in applying an uncolored liquid ilm to the wall surface, then applying a multi-colored liquid ilm thereto While the first ihn is Wet to cause the films to intermix, whereby to produce numerous shades of color, then applying a plastic coating thereover of a nature to absorb the intermixed multi-colored and multi-shaded lms, and iinally embossing the plastic coating before the same has set.
Signed at Batavia, in the countyof Genesee and tate of New York, this 10th dayjof October A. D. 1927.
