Description

1929- s. G. WILLIAMS ET AL FEED THOUGH Filed July 2, 1927 INV ///'am.9 f/merl. flask ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL G. WILLIAMS AND ELMEB L. RUSK, OF WINDSOR, MISSOURI FEED 'IROUGI-I Application filed July 2,
Our invention relates to feed troughs and its object is to reduce the number of parts and cost of manufacture of a trough of this character, and at the same time provide a trough,
, particularly for fowls, from which the fowls 5 cannot scatter the feed, and isadjustable to use for diiferent sizes of fowls.
In accomplishing these objects we have provided improved details of structure, the
preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
' Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a feed trough embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of an end member and an associated portion of the channel member, shown dis-related.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the trough on the line 33, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4; is a longitudinal section.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates two supports or end members,
an end member com risin a vertical bod portion 2 ofsubstantially triangular shape having a base or footing flange 3 and inturned side flanges 41, the side flanges being provided with openings 5 and the footing or base flange with an opening 6', for securing to the two end members a channel or trough member 7 The channel member comprises a tubular body :0 portion 9 having a longitudinal portion cut away to provide the opening 10, and having portions 11 of the edges of the opening inturned, constituting stiffening and guard flanges. The flanges are not pressed to the body of the chanel member, but are spaced therefrom. Edge portions not so turned constitute ears 12 having openings 13 to register with the openingsfi of the side flanges 1 of the end members, for securing the channel mem- 10 her to the end members. Openings 14 in the ends of the channel member are also provided, to align with the openings 16 in the base flanges, rivets 15 securing the trough to the supporting end members. 15 The end members are also provided with vertically aligned openings 16 for receiving 1 and supporting in vertically adjustable rela tion with the trough, a bar 17, having the bent head end 18, and the retaining nut 19.
The base flanges are also provided with 1927. Serial No. 203,190.
openings 20 for receiving nails or screws for edges prevent the young fowls from dragging feed particles from the trough with their beaks, and also provides a suitably smooth edge for avoiding injury to the necks of the fowls. The adjustable rod prevents access to i the trough by fowls larger than the class to which the rod is adjusted, prevents the fowls from getting into the trough, confining the heads of fowls feeding, and also serves as a 7 handle.
It is noted that a substantial trough is thus provided, consisting of four members or parts, that six rivets suffice to secure the channel with the supports, that the provision of supporting ears is accomplished by the means used to produce the guard flanges of the channel member, and that the adjustable bar added to the trough assembly co-operates with the trough flanges to prevent scattering of feed. 30
WVhat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Ina feeding device of the class described, end supports having inwardly directed flanges, and an arcuate trough member havs5 ing an elongated feed opening, intermediate portions of the edges of the trough member bordering said "opening being inturned to provide a check rail, end portions of the edges of the trough member constituting ears, said so ears being engaged with selected flanges of the end supports for retention of the trough member thereby.
2. In a feeding device of the class described, transverse end supports having inwardly directed, triangularly related base and side flanges, a trough member having an elongated feed opening, portions of the longitudinal edges of the trough member bordering said opening being inturned, unturned por- 1 tions of the edges of the trough member constituting upwardly extending ears, the bottom of the trough being engaged With said base flanges, and means engaging said ears to the side flanges of the end supports.
3. In a feed trough, triangular end supports having inbent flanges, a cylindrical trough having a longitudinal vertical open ing, inwardly directed flanges on the edges of the trough adjacent said openin and extending intermediately of the en s of the trough, end portions of the longitudinal edges of the trough being upstanding to provide attaching ears, means attaching the trough to the end supports including said upstandin ears, and a longitudinal uard bar supporte by the end supports equidistantly from said flanges.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
