Description

STEAM-KETTLE.
P'at ented Feb-29; 1876.
. WASHWGTON, D
PATENT CFFICE.
STILLMAN W. OHAMBERLIN, OF MONTAGUE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN STEAM-KETTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,194, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STILLMAN W. CHAM- BERLIN, of Montague, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Steam- Kettles, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improve ments in steam-kettles its object being to provide for the discharge of the escaping steam into the fire, and regulate said discharge, and also to provide a convenient means of filling said kettle without removing the cover or allowing ot' theescape of steam; and my invention consists of a kettle of ordinary construction, provided with an annular inclined ledge near the bottom, and having two tubes on theoutside, one communicating with the interior of the boiler near the top, and terminating under the inclined ledge, the other communicating with the boiler, and provided with a removable screw-cap at the top, as hereinafter more fully described and shown.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a per spective view of my apparatus, and Fig. 2 a
boiler, extending downward, and through the annular ledge D, terminating under the same, in such manner as to communloate w1th the stove or furnace when the boiler is in place thereon. The upper part of said tube communicates with i the interior of the boiler through an aperture, 6, in its walls. The letter F represents a valve of any suitable material, arranged to slidewithin the tube E, so
as to cover or uncover the aperture 6, as may be required, said valve being secured to a valve-rod, Gr, passing through a stuffing-box in the top of the tube E, and terminating in a suitable handle for operating the valve. H represents a tube provided with a screw-cap or other device for closing it at its upper end, its lower end communicating with the interior of the boiler below the pertorated false bottom. This pipe serves for the introduction of water in quantities as may be desired, and, as its lower end terminates below the surface of the liquid in the boiler, it prevents the escape of steam during the operation of filling.
The kettle, as thus constructed, will be found peculiarly advantageous for heating a perfov rated steaming vessel or colander, placed on top of the same, as the steam will pass off quickly before it has time to condense, and the substances being cooked, will not be saturated and injured by the water of condensation.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the boiler A, of the tube E,communicating with the interior of the boiler below the ledge D, and provided with a valve, F, for regulating the escape of steam, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
STILLMAN WALLACE CHAMBERLIN.
