My invention relates to a new and useful lighter and it relates more particularly to the type of lighter comprising a liquid fuel reservoir, a wick projecting therefrom, a flint type of igniter, and means for extinguishing the flame of the wick when not in use.
My invention relates more particularly, however, to certain novel features of construction residing in the igniter and extinguisher parts of the lighter, whereby a greater utility of construction is obtainable.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same have beenfound in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists canbe variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described. 7

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a fuel reservoir 1 comprising side walls 2-, top wall 3 and bottom 4, and having a removable closure 5 in the bottom thereof for the insertion of fuel.
A tubular wick nozzle 6 extends through the top of the reservoir, communicating therewith, and supports the free end 7 of a wick.
A bracket member 8 extends through the top of the reservoir and is fixedly secured therein. The upper part of the bracket is bifurcated so as to provide the two pivot flanges or plates 9, while the lower portion of the bracket 8 is provided with a vertical bore 10, within which a plunger 11 is disposed, urged upwardly by a spring 12.
In the preferred embodiment of my in vention, illustrated in Figures 1 to 7 inelusive, a tubular flint holder 13 is extended through the two pivot plates 9 and is jour nalled therein, as shown particularly in Figures 5 and 6. The flint holder 13 carries an arm 14: intermediate of the two pivot plates 9, and is fixedly secured to the tubular flint carrying member, by means of the pin, screw or other fastening means 15, common to said arm and said tubular flint carrying member 13.
An extinguishermember 16 extends through the free end of the arm 14, as shown particularly in Figures 5 and 6 and substantially parallel to the flint-carrying member 13.
The operative end of the flint-carrying member 13 is provided with a terminal housing 17 for containing the abrasive wheel or member 18, while the extinguisher member 16 carries a. similar terminal housing member or extinguisher cap 19 in iuxtaposition and in spaced relation to the abrasive hous ing 17 its The abrasive wheel 18, as well as the somewhat larger operating or thumb wheel 20, fixedly secured thereto, is fixedly mount-ed upon a loose pivot 21 journalled at one end in the terminal wall 22 of the abrasive housing 17 and j-ournalled at its other end in the wall of the extinguisher cap housing 19. The thumb wheel 20 is disposed between the abrasive housing 17 and the extinguisher cap 19, as shown particularly in Figure 5, with the periphery thereof projecting a suitable distance beyond the external surfaces of either of said housings, thereby to give ready access to the same.
The pivoted end of the arm 14 is provided with right angular, terminal walls 23 and 24, against which the end of the spring pressed plunger '11 is adapted to abut. By
this means, the arm 14 will be yieldably retained in either the horizontal position shown in Figures 3, 6 and 7, or in the vertical position shown in Figure 4.
When the arm is in the horizontal position shown in Figures 3, 6 and 7, the extinguisher cap housing 19 is superimposed upon the wick 7 and the wick nozzle 6, thereby so enclosing the wick as to extinguish the flame thereof. In this position likewise, the abrasive wheel 18 as well as the thumb wheel 20, is in a generally vertical and inoperative position.
Upon turningthe arm 14 into the vertical position shown in Figure 4, the extinguisher member 16 and extinguisher cap 19 are raised into a vertical position thereby exposing the wick 7, and the abrasive wheel 18 and thumb Whee 2 re t th same time urned at an angle of and into a. horizontal and opera tive position, with the periphery of the abra, sive wheel in operative alignment with the wick 7'.
The flint 25 is constantly pressed into con.- taet with the abrasive wheel 18, by means of a spring 26 which is contained within the tubular body 13 and which is confined be, tween the flint 25 and a, screw 27 detachably and adj ustably threaded into the tubular member 13, and provided with a knurled thumb piece 28. The extinguisher member 16 may be bored out or made hollow either throughout its entire length or throughout a portion of its length, as at 29, thereby to serve as a storage compartment for a spare piece of flint 8,0, which may be retained therein by a screw-threaded plug 31 threaded into the end of the compartment 29',
It will be observed that in the novel construction hereinab-ove described and shown in F igures 1 to 7 inclusive of the drawings, the flint holder 13 functionsfirst, as a pivot for the rm 14 as Well a he exti guisher member 16 and also for the entire igniting or stri i g m chani m; then a so se e as the h using fo th spring pressed flint nd as a housing for the abrasive Wheel.
The extinguisher member 16, on the other hand, serves first, to extinguish the wick, then to act as a support for one end of the abrasive wheel pivot 21 and then to act as a storage compartment for spare pieces of flint.
In Figure 8, I have illustrated a modified construction embodying my invention, in which the tubular flint holder 32 is fixedly mounted in the two pivot plates 9 and whereby the arm 14 is swivelled freely about the stationary tubular member 32. In this modified construction the abrasive wheel housing 33 is positioned with its axis in a vertical direction and with the pivot 34 supported wholly at its upper end 35, and in a rigid manner.
The abrasive wheel 18 and the thumb wheel 20 are loosely mounted upon the stationary pivot 34 and are retained thereon by a lock nut 36. In this modified construction, therefore, the striking mechanism remains sta tionary and only the extinguisher member 16 and the extinguisher cap or housing 19 are movable, and their operative and inoperative I positions are likewise controlled by the spring plunger 11.
In Figure 9 I have illustrated a still further modified construction, similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive in every respect, except that the abrasive wheel 18 and the thumb Wheel 20 are here loosely mounted upon a stationary or fixed pivot 37 which is carried rigidly in the abrasive wheel housing 17 and supported at its other end in the wall of the extinguishercap 1-9,
I11 Figures 10 to '12 inclusive, I have illustrated a still further modified construction, in which the flint holder 38 and the extinguisher member 39 are positioned parallel to each other in their inoperative position, but are supported entirely independent of each other. 7
In this modified construction the flint holder and striking mechanism is of the same construction as that shown in Figure 8, that is, stationary, with the abrasive wheel and thumb wheel 18 and 20 respectively, carried by a stationary pivot supported at its upper end and having a lock nut at its lower end,
The extinguisher member 39, on the other hand, is carried by a pivot bracket 40, also having a spring pressed plunger 41 therein and a spring 42. In order to afford greater bearing surface for the reduced diameter portion of the thumb wheel 20, without unduly extending the thumb wheel and housing downwardly or without decreasing the outer gripping periphery of the thumb wheel, I may provide an annular bearing journal 46 in the thumb wheel 20 and may provide a corresponding 'downwardly projecting bearing or supporting flange 47 upon the abrasive wheel housing 33, thereby increasing the bearing surface of the thumb wheel, as shown particularly in Figure 13.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof. and I therefore desire the present embodiments to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference beinghad to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lighter of the character stated, a fuel reservoir, a pivot bracket carried on top of the reservoir, having its upper end bifurcated so as to form a pair of pivot plates, an elongated tubular flint holder extending through said pivot plates and journalled therein, an arm carried upon and fixedly se- I cured to said flint holder, an extinguisher bar rigidly carried by the free end of said arm, substantially parallel to said flint holder, a pivot extending between the juxtaposed ends of said flint holder and said extinguisher bar and having its two ends supported thereby, an abrasive wheel and a thumb wheel carried by said pivot and a spring pressed flint Within said flint holder in operative contact with said abrasive wheel.
2. A lighter of the character stated, comprising a fuel reservoir, a pivot bracket proj ecting upwardly from the top of said reservoir having its upper end bifurcated thereby to form a pair of pivot plates, a tubular flint holder extending through said pivot plates longitudinally of the top of the reservoir and journalled in said pivot plates, an arm fixedly carried by said tubular flint holder intermediate of said pivot plates, an extinguisher bar carried by the free end of said arm substantially parallel to said flint holder, a wick nozzle having a wick extending therethrough carried by the top of said reservoir, an extinguisher cap carried by said extinguisher bar in operative alingnment with said wick, an abrasive wheel housing carried by the end of the flint holder in juxtaposition to the extinguisher cap, a pivot extending between the extinguisher cap and abrasive wheel housing and having its two ends supported thereby, an

A lighter of the character stated, comprising a fuel reservoir, a pivot bracket projecting upwardly from the top of said reservoir having its upper end bifurcated thereby to form a pair of pivot plates, a tubular flint holder extending through said pivot plates longitudinally of the top of the reservoir and journalled in said pivot plates, an arm fixedly carried by said tubular flint holder intermediate of said pivot plates, an extinguisher bar carried by the free end of said arm substantially parallel to said flint holder, a wick nozzle having a wick extending therethrough carried by the top of said reservoir, an extinguisher cap carried by said extinguisher bar in operative alignment with said wick, an abrasive wheel housing carried by the end of the flint holder in juxtaposition to the extinguisher cap, a pivot extending between the extinguisher cap and abrasive wheel housing and having its two ends supported thereby, an abrasive wheel within said abrasive housing carried by said pivot, a thumb wheel intermediate said abrasive wheel housing and said extinguisher cap also carried by said pivot and operatively connected with said abrasive wheel, a spring pressed flint disposed within said flint holder in contact with said abrasive wheel, and a spring pressed plunger within said pivot bracket bearing against the pivoted end of said arm, thereby to retain the arm either in the operative or inoperative positions thereof at a right angle to each other.
5. In a device of the character stated, a pivot bracket, a horizontal tubular flint holder journalled in said bracket, an abrasive Wheel housing carried at one end of said tubular flint holder and a pivot mounted co-v axially in said housing.

In a device of the character stated, a pivot bracket, a tubular flint holder jour-v nalled in said pivot bracket, an abrasive housing carried in one end of said tubular flint holder, an arm pivotally supported by said tubular flint holder, an extinguisher bar carried by said arm, and a pivot pin axially disposed within said abrasive Wheel housing having its ends supported in said housing and in said bar, respectively.
7. In a device of the character stated, a
a thumb wheel rotatably carried byv said pivot pin exteriorly of said housing and operatively connected With said abraslve heel;
said thumb Wheel having a reduced diameter pivot bracket, a horizontal tubular flintholder carried thereby, an abrasive Wheel housing carried at one end of said tubular flint holder, a pivot pin carried by said abrasive Wheel housing and disposed co-axially with respect thereto, an abrasive wheel rotatably carried by said pivot pin Within said housing, and a thumb Wheel rotatably carried by said pivot pin exterior-1y of said housing and op'eratively connected with said abrasive Wheel. In a device of the character stated, -a pivot bracket, a horizontal tubular flint holder carried thereby, an abrasive wheel housing carried at one end of said tubular flint holder, a pivot pin carried by said abrasive Wheel housing and disposed co-axially with respect thereto, an abrasive heel rotatably carried by said pivot pin Within said housing, and a thumb wheel rotatably carried by said pivot pin exteriorly of said housing and operatively connected with said abrasive Wheel said thumb Wheel-having a reduced diameter portion projecting into said housing and journalled therein.

In a device of the character stated, a pivot bracket, a horizontal tubular flint holder carried thereby, an abrasive Wheel house ing carried at one end of said tubular flint holder, a pivot pin carried by said abrasive Wheel housing and disposed co-axially with respect thereto, an abrasive Wheel rotatably carried by said pivot pin Within said housing, a thumbwheel rotatably carried by said pivot pin .exteriorly ofsaid housing and operatively connected with said abrasive heel, an extinguisher ar-m pivotally mounted upon said flint holder, and an extinguisher bar carried by the free end of said arm substantially parallel to said flint holder. r
