This invention relates to pumps of the force and suction type.
It is an object of my inventionto provide an extremely simple but highly eiiicient pump which is especially designed for pumping water containing considerable foreign material, such as mud, gravel and refuse.
Y It is a further object to provide a pump which will withstand extremly heavy wear and which is so constructed that the pumping chamber and .valvechambers may be quickly and easily opened for the purpose of replacing or repairing parts and for examining the same.
Another object is toprovide a force and suction pump which will permit relatively large pieces of foreign material to be easily lpumped through the valve chambers without impedance and without damage toany of the parts. i .i

As illustrated in the drawings, my improved pump comprises a substantially straight three-piece base or body, which may be of oblong cross section, said body comprising a central chamber 6 having parallel and inclined ends 6a and 6b respectively, an intake chamber 7 vand an outlet chamber 8. intake chamber 7 has an inclined inner end Vadapted to register with'the adjacent end of chamber 6 and has a substantially rectangular opening 7 a at said end, and a flange definingsaid opening constituting a seat for the intake valve. The upper portionof intake chamber 7 has a depending inclined shoulder 7b and the bottoni of said chamber is slightly inclined to lcause the water and material to drop slightly when entering chamber 6 from the intake chamber. valve is interposed between the opposing ends of chamber 6 and intake chamber 7, said flap valveA as4 illustrated in Fig. 5, `comprising Va rectangular body 9 of flexible material, such as leatherrhaving-a central rectangular flap 9a cut therein, said flap being of slightly greater area than the seat about intake passage 7u. Flap Y9 preferably has vattached thereto a suitable weight 10 which may be of rectangular form, and which may be securedy to said I flap by any suitable means, such as nutted bolt l1, a small pinor rivet 12 also being preferably employed' to prevent weight l0 from turning. Vertical bolts 13y extend through said bolt holes engaging the recessed portions of the valve body 9 and threadedly engaging the bottom portion of the intake chamber 7, thereby clamping chamber 7 tightly against the adjacent end of chamber 6 with the valve interposed therebetween and with the flap valve 92% normally covering the Vseat about .the passage 7a. The outer end of intake passage 7 may be provided with a plurality of bosses .76', anyone of which may be drilled or apertured and threaded to receive an intake conduit 14E. The opposite or outlet end of chamber 6 is provided with a substantially rectangular slightly restricted outlet opening 6d substantially similar in shape and construction to the outlet opening 7 of valve chamber 7 and a second valve body 9 having the iap valve 9 formed therein, identical with the flap valve first described is interposed between said outlet end of chamber 6 and the adjacent end of outlet chamber 8. Outlet chamber 8 is provided with laterally extending bulges or ears 8et having the vertical bolt holes therethrough aligned with the semi-cylindrical recesses 9b of the outlet flap valve and vertical bolts 13 extend through said bolt holes and threadedly engage the slightly thickened portion of the base of chamber 6 at their inner ends, thereby clamping out-let chamber 8 to the outlet end of chamber 6 with the discharge flap valve 9 disposed for ope-ration against the rectangular seat or flange about the passage 6d. Outlet chamber 8, vlike intake chamber 7, may have a plurality of bosses 8C disposed at its outer sides and any one of said bosses may be drilled or apertured and threaded to receive a suitable outlet conduit 15.
The top of chamber 6 is provided with an upstanding boss 16 which is threaded to form a vertical passage 16a communicating centrally with the top of the central chamber 6 and the boss 16 is further drilled or apertured at its upper end to leave a shoulder or seat 16b about passage 16a and a pump cylinder 17 has externally threaded engagement at its inner and lower end with boss 16. A gasket 18. is preferably interposed between the lower extremity of pumpv cylinder 17 and seat 16h. A piston 19 is slidably mounted within pump cylinder 17 carrying twoor more cup leathers 19, which snugly t within said cylinder. A piston rod 20 is connected' at its lower 'and inner end with piston 19 and works through a bearing in a suitable cap member 21, which Y may be threadedly secured to the upper end of cylinder 17.
It will be noticed that the bottom of the chamber 6 is slightly inclined so that the water and material passing through the pump in the drection of the arrows will drop slightly as it enters the outlet passa-ge 8 from s chamber 6 and also that the edge of the leather bodies 9 of the valve immediately adjacent the free edge of the flaps are rounded or beveled in order that ledges will not be formed to collect material.
The. operation-*of my improved pump may be briefly described' as follows :n
T he plunger or piston`1'9' is reciprocatedby any suitable meansor pump jack and upon the upward stroke-a strong suction will be prodiuced in chamber 6 forcing the outlet valve Hapl 9a against its flange or seat about outlet passage 6d and simultaneously causing the intake flap valve 9a' to bef opened and liquid to pass into the chamber 6. Upon the downward stroke of piston 19 pressure is placed upon the liquid in chamber 6 immediately causing the diagonal intake flap valve 9a to be forced against its seat in closed position and forcing the liquid through the outlet flap valve 9a into outlet chamber 8 and out of the pump. The weights 10 on the flap valves give additional rigidity to the portion of the flap constituting the closure and make the valves quickly responsive to the action of the piston. Pump cylinder 17 being vertically disposed above the chamber 6 prevents any foreign material from entering the pump cylinder -and contacting the plunger or cup leathers.
It will be seen thatl liquid containing large portions offoreign material, suoli as rubbish, gravel or mud will readily pass through the pump without impedance, the Hap valves when open permitting an unobstructive passage, and the bottom surface` .of the intake chamber and pumping chamber 6 beng inclined slightly toward the delivery end of the pump,I thereby permitting the liquid and material to drop slightly when entering the suction chambers and also facilitating the simplicty of the seats for the two valves. No ledges or impediments exist in my structure andv it is impossible for sand or rubbish entering the pump to damage the flap valves or to gain access into the pumping cylinder.
lt will readily be seen that to inspect the three chambers of the pump ory to replace 0r repair the flap valves, it is only necessary to remove the bolts 13 which clamp the sections together and which clamp the valve bodies between two abutting sections. The structure is exceedingly simple, but will withstand heavy usage and will not be. effected by the presence of alkali, acid and mineral in the liquid. l Y
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have-invented a highly eiicient force pump especially adapted to be used in pumping liquid containing impuritiesV and foreign material. I
The edges of the flap val-ve bodies 9, it will be seen, constitute an eicient gasketv sealing the joints betweenthe pumping chamber 6 and the intake and outlet chmbers.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made inthe form, details, arrangement and, proportions of" the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A. pump especially adapted for pumping liquid containing foreign material, comprising a horizontal pumping chamber having a substantially straight longitudinal passage therethrough, the bottom of said passage being flat and unobstructed, said passage having an intake port atoneend thereof disposed slightly above the vbottom of said passage4 and having an outlet port at the opposite; endl having its lower edge disposed Hush with the bottom of said passage, a pumping cylinder communicating laterally with the upper and intermediate portion of said pumping chamber, a reciprocating plunger in said cylinder, a flap valve at the intake end of said pumping chamber having its lower edge free for movement into said passage, and a flap valve at the outlet end of said chamber having its lower edge free for movement outwardly of said passage.
2. A pump especially adapted for pumping liquid containing foreign material, comprising a horizontal pumping chamber having a substantially straight longitudinal passage therethrough, the bottom of said passage being substantially flat and unobstructed, said passage having an intake port at one end thereof disposed slightly above the bottom of said passage and having an outlet port at the opposite end the lower edge of which is disposed flush with the bottom of said passage, a pumping cylinder communicating laterally with the upper and intermediate portion of said pumping chamber, a reciprocating plunger in said cylinder, means for limiting the stroke of said plunger to prevent its proj ection into said pumping chamber, an intake chamber secured to the intake end ofvsaid pumping chamber, an inclined flap valvey interposed between said intake chamber and said pumpingchamber and having its lower edge free for movement into said passage, an outlet chamber secured to the opposite end of said pumping chamber having a bottom disposed slightly below the level of the lower edge of said outlet port and an inclined flap valve disposed between said pumping chamf ber and said outlet chamber and having its lower edge free for movement into said outlet chamber.
