The intakes 25 and operating mechanism therefor are ,shown in detail ,in Figures 5 to 12. Each section 12 `has a lateral extension 25a which slopes downwardly into the chu-te and has an inner closure :30 pivoted thereon at 31 and an outer hopper-shaped closure 32 pivoted thereon at 33 which, when shut, is flush with the wall 24. The. operating mechanism 'for' ' closures 32 and 30 includes a cam'linkmem'ber '36 connected to a lpedal lever37 `at 36,`the lever 37 being pivoted on a vertical channel member .39 and rbeing operable upwardly as well as downwardly by provision rof a second pedal i:lever 41 pivoted kat 42 `and having a slotted end 43engaging a/pin 44 on `lever 37. Ped-al levers '3.7 and 4l *proj-ect outwardly beneath the intakes, preferably in a recess 45,* so`that l'they will not obstruct the corridor on which fthe intakes open.
The .cam link member 36 is designed to open fand close the outerand inner closures 5in the Vdesired sequence and also 'to lock the inner vclosure shut when the outer closure lis being opened. 'To this end 4the li-'nk member '36 is formed with a cam slot 46 in which is operable a pin 47 secured on arm 34 and is also formed with a yslot 48 in which projects a pin 49 on'farm 35. Into slot 48 there projects a guide lflan-ge "50 formed on la v-me-mbe-r 50 "secured on link 36.

Referring again to Figure 9 the portion 46a'of slot 46 is designed to permit-downward movement of link 36 `permi-tting it 'to swing so that closure 32' will vbe swung Ashut 'by 'engagement of the'side edgeof 4slot 48 with pin 494 to close the outer closure and thus bring with pin 49 which prevents link V36 from. fsw-inging to vthe left (Figure 11).
As best shown in Figure 12, the portion 46C Iofcam slot l46 is designed to permit closure 30 to swing shut by action of gravity when pin I47 rides over -to the right end of cam slot portion 46h, this action being such as to swing 'link {d6-'slightly tothe left so that pin 49 passes over top and in back of flange 50 Iand permits movement `of link 36 upwardly to itsneutral position jshown'in Figure 9 without any effect on either fof the closures.
, In the operation of "the intake, the right pedal 41 is depressed to move cam l-inkr36 upwardly, opening the outer closure 32 and locking the inner closure 30 shut; the refuse is deposited in hopper 32; the left pedal 37 is then depressed, first closing closure 32 which action is assisted by spring-35EL or other suitable means wh-ich'lholids :this closure shut; then open-ing closure '30, which permits the waste to fall into the chute; and finally .permitting thev latter .to vclose by gravity.
It will appear from the foregoing that the dou-'ble intake prevents odors, gases or flame from passing outof the intake 'when refuse is fdeposited'in the chute. Moreover, if combustion should take place in the chute, fusing of link 28 results in creating a draft in the chute, tending it'o draw air inwardly at the intakes, the latter, because of the double construction, preventing leakage of any considera'blel wir into the chute in this manner, and thus Iproviding for .the creation yof a strong draft at the Vbottom of Vthe .'chute, whereby the heat and fumes willbe effectively dissipated. In addition, the automatic sprinkler '26 will be operated toquench the burning refuse.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted x'to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What vis claimed isi:
1. A waste disposal chute including double closure intakes, and means for operating the closure including an arm connected to each closure and a single elementfor actuating the arms yso that one of the closures is shut while the other is open, said elementhaving. cam' slots therein and a pin on each arm projecting into each cam slot, each cam slot having a portion for opening each closure and one cam slot having a portion for permitting the member to move to open the other closure.` Y V A Waste disposalchute including dounormally shut, and means for operating the closures including an arm connected to each closure and a single element for actuating the arms so that one of the closures is shut while the other is open.

A waste disposal chute having double closure intakes, including, in combination, an outer pivoted closure and an inner pivoted closure, each of said closures being yieldingly urged to shut positions, and common means foroperating the closures so that one or the other is always shut, said means including a movable cam member, cams on the member for operating each closure, an arm connected to each closure having means engaging its operating cam, each of said cams having a portion for permitting movement of the member during operation of a closure by the other cam, one of said cam portions being adapted to lock one closure during operation of the other, and a double-acting foot pedal lever arrangement for moving said member.
4. A waste disposal chute having double closure intakes, including, in combination, an outer pivoted closure and an inner pivoted closure, each of said closures being yieldingly urged to shut positions, and common means for operating the closures so that one or the other is always shut, said means including a movable cam member, cams on the member for operating each closure, and an arm connected to each closure having means engaging its operating cam, each of said cams having a portion for permitting movement of the member during operation of a closure by the other cam, one of said cam portions being adapted to lock one closure during operation of the other. l
5. A waste disposal chute having double closure intakes, including, in combination, an outer pivoted closure and an inner pivoted closure, each of said closures being yieldingly urged to shut positions, and common means for operating theclosures so that one or the other is always shut, said means including a movable cam member, cams on the member for operating each closure, and an arm connected to each closure having means engaging its operating cam, each of said cams having a portion for permitting movement of the member during operation of a closure by the other cam.
6. A waste disposal chute having double closure intakes, including, in combination, an outer pivoted closure and an inner pivoted closure, each of said closures Vbeing yieldingly urged to shut positions, and common means for operating the closures so that one or the other is always shut, said means including a movable cam member, cams on the member for operating each closure, and an arm connected to each closure having means engaging its operating cam.
