The present invention relates to an attachment for plows and has reference more p artic ularly to a shield for use upon plows employed in plowing young corn.

One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a shield that is secured on the plow beam, the shield being of such construction as to allow a certain amount of loose dirt to pass through openings formed in in the shield onto the ground around the young corn.

A further object is to provide a plow shield of the above mentioned character that can be readily and easily attached to a plow without l necessitating any alterations of the parts of the plow, the shield being, further, simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and, further, well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates generally my improved shield, the same comprising a substantially rectangular shaped plate 2 constructed of any suitable metal. This shield is secured in a vertical manner on a plow, and to this end, I provide the securing bracket 3 that is constructed of strap-iron. The bracket includes a vertical portion 4l that is rigidly attached to the intermediate portion of the plate 2 by any appropriate fastening means shown at 5. The horizontal portion 6 of the strap iron bracket 3 is twisted intermediate its ends as at 7 and the free end portion thereof is bent to form a clamp 8 that extends around the plow lit Serial No. 253,672.

beam orshank 9 and this clamp is securely held on the beam or shank by means of the bolt l0 which bolt cooperates with the clamp in the manner as clearly disclosed in Figure l.

The plate 2 is formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending openings or slots l1 of various lengths and these slots are preferably arranged in staggered relation on opposite sides of the central portion ofthe plate as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The slots are formed by the struck out lips l2 and these lips are disposed at an inclination whereby to provide a means for taching the loose or tine dirt as the plow moves along the row of corn and manifestly these outwardly struck lips 12 will catch the line dirt and will cause such dirt to sift through the longitudinal slots ll and fall onto the ground around the young corn.

A shield of the above mentioned character can be readily and easily installed on a plow without necessitating `any alterations of the parts of the plow with which the plow is to be associated, and furthermore the shield will at all times be positive and efficient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.

While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a plow shield, a metallic plate, an an* gular bracket therefor, the vert-ical arm of the bracket being secured transversely to the intermediate portion of the plate, said plate being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots of various lengths, the slots being arranged in staggered relation on opposite sides of the central portion of the plate, and inclined lips extending upwardly from the lower edges of the slots to catch the dirt and cause the same to sift through the respective slots.

2. In combination with the beam of a plow, a plow shield comprising a metallic plate arranged. vertically adjacent the plow beam, an angular attaching bracket having :its vertical portion secured transversely to the intermediate portion of the plate, the horizontal portion of the angular bracket being disposed Y around the plow beam and secured thereto,

said plate being formed With a series of longitudinally extending slots of various lengths, said slots being disposed in staggered relation With respect to each other and on opposite sides of the central portion of the plate, and inclined upwardly extending lips projecting from the lower edges of the slots to catch the dirt and cause the same to sift through the respective slots.
