CdMBINED ARM REST AND PROP Filed March 29, 1928 1 I I /%A 11 II I Ilx I INVENTOR I Ari/var Z'fial'lfy.
ATTORNEY BY 1 a D:
Patented Nov. 19, 1929 ARTHUR F. BAILLY, OF YARDVILLE, NEW JERSEY COMBINED ARM REST AND PROP Application filed March 29, 1928. Serial No. 265,608.
This invention relates to a device which may be used as an armrest and/or a prop, and which may serve advantageously on a combination folding chair and cot with one of the adjustable sections thereof.
One or the objects of the present invention is to provide a practical and eliicient device of the indicated character which may be readily adjusted for the intended purpose.
Another and more specific object of the present invention, is the provision of a device of the indicated character, consisting of retaining means which serves in conjunction with a part to constitute an arm rest, said 5 means also serving to hold said part of it difterent positions of adjustment when used as an arm rest, and said means also serving to hold said part in a position to serve as a prop for proping or supporting an adjustable section of a combined chair and cot, in which said section serves as a seat back as well as a cot section.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the particular combination, construction and functions of the parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a combination chair and cot with the device of the present invention applied to one of the adjustable sections thereof employed as an arm rest.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the device employed as a prop tor the adjustable section. V
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating certain fea tures of the retaining means of the device.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken on the line 49 1- 1 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In practice two similar devices will be employed in conjunction with an adjustable section or part of a combination folding chair and cot, and closely analogous articles. The combination chair and cot shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing has been fully described and illustrated in United $tates Patent No. W 11, 30352 12, me. The said combi nation chair and cot includes a service section 10 which is adjustable to different positions, and held in such position by suitable means provided for that purpose. The said section 10 serves as a seat back and head rest, and also as a cot section on which a person may repose.
One device of the present invention is connected with the section 10 at each side thereof, connection being made with the side rail 11. The device includes a rigid element or part 12, and retaining means which releasably holds the part 12 in different positions of adjustment or angular positions with respect to the rail 11. The said retaining means includes a plate 13 which is attached to the rail 11 by suitable fastening elements such as the screws 14. The plate 13 has connected therewith a stud or arbor 15, a hole 16, a hole 17, and a plurality of holes 18. All of the holes 16, 17 and 18 are arranged concentrically with respect to the axis of the arbor 15. An elongated plate 19 is secured to the part 12 by suitable fastening elements such as the screws 20. The arbor 15 extends through a hole in the plate 19, there being a recess 21 in the part 12 to accommodate the projecting end of the arbor 15 which has formed thereon or connected therewith a head 22. The head 22 is connected or formed on the arbor 15 after it has been extended through the hole in the plate 19. The plate 19 carries a stud 23 which is so positioned as to be received in either one of the holes 16, 17 and 18. It will now be understood that the part 12 is mounted for turning movement on the arbor 15 and also for sliding movement with respect thereto.
In order to adjust the part 12 to different positions it is only necessary to slide the part 12 on the arbor 15, which will bring the stud 23 out of the plane of the plate 13. The stud 23 may then be entered into either one of the holes 16, 17 and 18. When the stud 23 is entered in the hole 16 the part 12 will be disposed parallel to the rail 11 as indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 3. When it is desired to use the part 12 as an arm rest the stud 23is entered into one of the holes 18.
than hole 18 is so that the part 12 when used as an arm rest may assume difierent angular positions with respect to the rail 11. When the section 10 of the combination chair and cot is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, the said section may be propped in this position by entering the stud 23 into the hole17:
I claim:
The combination in a chair, of a seat'back,
a plate fixedly secured to the; seat back,
arbor extending laterally from said plate, said plate having holes therein arranged con centrically with respect to said arbor, an arm rest mounted on said arbor forrocking' and silding movement, a stud on said arm rest, said armrest being movable to different angular positions by reason of the fact that it may be rocked on the arbor, and said stud being receivable in either one of said holes by reason of the fact that the arm rest may be slid on said arbor; said stud when received in one of said holes serving to prevent rocl ing movement of the arm rest.
Signed at city of Trenton in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, this. Qath day ofM'arcli, 1928.
