Description
UNITED STATES JAooBJ. MAEKEL,
PATENT OFFICE.
oF NANKIN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,413, dated February 15, 1876; application filed January 21, 1876.
To all whom ttf may concern Be it known that I, J. J. MARKEL, of Nankin, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets, of' which the following is a full, clear, and exact descripv tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' -a whipsocket with my device attached. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the locking device exposed.
My invention relates to that class ot' whipsockets used on carriages and other vehicles;
, provided with the spring-catch B, as shown in Fig. 2. 0n the lower extreme of the socket is secured the locking-chamber C, which is provided with a slot and key-hole, D, in its outer wall. A groove, d, is provided on the inner side of the cha-inher, in which slides the bolt E, which passes from the lockingcham ber into the socket, and beneath the loose or lower end of the spring-catch B. This bolt is provided with the stud e, which lits into the slot c, and has a knob, b, upon its outer end, with shoulders extending over the sides of the slot. The
bolt E is provided with ratchet-teeth m on one side, into which ts a pivoted spring-pawl, F, as represented in Fig. 3. 5
The operation of my device is as follows: The bolt E being in its lower position, the handle of the whip is passed into the socket, and end descends below the lower or loose end of the catch B. Then, by sliding up the `bolt E, by means of the knob b, the spring-catch is forced against the handle ofthe whip, and secures it in position. To release the whip from the socket, the spring-pawl F is raised out ot' the ratchet-teeth m by means of a key, which,
pushes against the short arm n of the lever, when the bolt E can be withdrawn from its position beneath or behind the spring-catch B, allowing the catch to spring away from the handle of the Whip, and permit its withdrawal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I Y rlhe socket A, provided with the slotted locking-chamber U, in. combination with the spring-catch B, located entirely Within the socket, the serrated bolt E, passing up into the socket, and provided with the knob b and springfpawl F, all constructed to operate sub, stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JACOB J. MARKEL. Witnesses:
JAMES ALBEn'soN, A. CARY ALBERsoN.
