My invention relates to spiders and more partlcularly to spiders for handling or grip ping tubes, casings, rods, and the like; and the object is to provide gripping devices which are simple in construction and opera tion and which are strong and durable. One of the advantages of this invention that numerous parts heretofore used for such purposes are eliminated and an operating device is provided which has very few parts as compared with other devices for such purposes. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the spider.

Fig. 4 is a vertical section, showing the slips disengaged, and showing a variation in the base of the body.

Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several-views.
The improved spider has a body or bowl 1 in Which the slips 2 operate. A cone-shaped lid 3 is provided for carrying the slips 2. The lid 3 has an extension in the form of a cylindrical sleeve 4, serving, when the slips are disengaged, as a band for the slips. See Fig. 4. The slips 2 are loosely connected to the lid 3 by means of T-bolts 5, which are screwed partly into the upper ends of-the slips. The lid 3 has slots 6 to permit adjustment of the slips 2. The bolts 5 slide freely in the slots 6 and are prevented from leaving the lid by the heads on the bolts 5. The slips 2 are thus suspended and held in place only by the lid 3 and the bolts 5. The lid has laterally projecting lugs 7 into which guide bolts 8 are screwed. The guide bolts 8 are made to move vertically by bearings 9 which are formed on the body 1. The lid 3 is moved vertically by a lever or yoke 10 which is pivotally connected to the part 4 of the lid by bosses 11 into which are screwed bolts 12, the bolts 12 and the bosses 11 forming the means by which the lid is moved vertically. The yoke 10 is provided with a fulcrum extension 13. A movable fulcrum 14 ispivotally connected to the extension 13 and pivotally connected to a lu 15 which is integral with the body 1. The yo ke 10 is provided with a handle 16 for elevating the lid when the slips are to be released. The yoke 10, the lid and slips are held in the elevated position by a swinging .dog 17 which is pivotally connected to the handle 16. The dog 17 is locked in the elevated position by a bracket or keeper 18 which is bolted to the bearing 9. A chain 19 is attached to the bearing 9 and pivotally connected to the dog 17. The object of the chain is to swing the dog 17 inwardly in going to the elevated position to cause the dog to engage the keeper 18. When the slips are to be used for a gripping operation, the
dog 17 is released manually. The slips 2 will drop by gravity and engage therod 20 or other object to be engaged. A weight 21 is suspended from the fulcrum extension 13 to counteract to some extent the weight of the yoke 10 and the slips. The fall of the slips 2 might be sometimes too sudden and severe. The weight 21 would modify the descent of the slips. The weight 21 will cooperate to some extent in holding the slips elevated. The Weight 21 may be varied to meet the requirements of different constructions or arrangements.
The body 1 is provided with a flared base 22 for connection with a casing head'23. The base 22 is supported on a shoulder 24 and a cushioning element 25 is interposed between the shoulder 24 and the base 22. The base 22 is secured in the casing head by screws 26 which have a wedging effect when screwed in against the base.
A variation in the base is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The base 27 is triangular in form and is provided with hooks 28. The base is set on the casing head and secured thereto by any suitable securing means, as by chains 7 or cables.
What I claim, is,
1. A tubing spider comprising sli s, a body having a funnel-shaped opening t erethrough for engaging and wedging said slips against a pull rod, a cone-shaped lid therefor having an opening therethrough for a pull rod and having slots in the inclined portion thereof, and T-bolts projected through said slots for engaging said slips within said body and having the heads thereof resting and slidable on the outside of said lid.

body having a funnel-shaped opening t erethrough for engaging and wed ing said through for engaging and wedging said slips against a pull rod, a lid for said body having an opening therethrough for a pull rod and provided with laterally projecting lugs, means loosely connected with said lid for adjusting said slips in said body, guide bearings formed on diagonally opposite sides of said body and guide rods screwed into said lugs and movable in said bearings.
4. A tubing spider comprising slips, a body having a funnel-shaped opening therethrough for engaging and wedgmg said slips against a pull rod, a lid for said body having an opening therethrough for a pull rod, means loosely connected with said lid and with said slips for adjusting the slips in said body, bosses formed on diagonally opposite sides of said lid, and a lever yoke pivotally connected to said bosses and fulcrumed on said body for operating said lid.
5. A tubing spider comprising slips, a body having a funnel-shaped opening therethrough for engaging and wedging said slips against a pull rod, a lid for said body having an opening therethrough for a pull rod, means loosely connected with said lid and rigidly connected to said slips for adjusting said slips in said body, bosses formed 01: opposite sides of said lid, a lever yoke pivotally connected to said bosses and fulcrumed on said body for elevating and lowering said lid, and means operatively connected to said yoke and to said body for locking said lid in the elevated position. v
