Description

T. F. HARRISON. TRANSFER-SHEETS Fon COPYING.
Patented Feb. 8,1876. 1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
THOMAS F. HARRISON, OF NEW YORK, N. vY.
|MPRovl-;MENT 1N TRANSFER-SHEETS FOR COPYING.Y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,282, dated February 8, '11876; application filed December 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HARRISON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Devices for Transferring Maps Drawings, Svc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the being transferred by free hand to a corresponding space upon paper printed with lines, forming spaces similar to those on the map. This was open to t-he objectionof being very expensive, and of soiling the map by constant handling in the process of the transfer.
The object of myinvention is to provide a means :for transferring maps, engravings, drawings, Src., whereby they may be reproduced of the original size, or symmetrically enlarged' or reduced, v,without marking the map, drawing, &c., or' soiling the same; and it conslsts in the improved device hereinafter fully descrlbed and claimed.
A represents a sheet of material, either gelatine, mica,or other similar transparent iiexlble substance, upon which are placed lines v B, crossing or intersecting lines C, forming a `series of spaces.
These spaces maybe rect; angular, as shown, or of any polygonal form. D represents a sheet of paper or other material, to which the map-7 drawing, &c., is to be transferred; also provided-with lines E, which cross or intersect lines F, forming a series of 7 spaces similar to, but one-half the sire of,
those formed by `the `lines B and C in Fig. 1. In the, drawing, I have shown my invention in use for transferring a map. The sheet A is placed over the map and held in position by the hand, or otherwise. A particular square, as that marked G, is then selected from which to begin. All that portion'of the map embraced within the square is transferred :by free-hand drawing to the corresponding square Mon the sheet in Fig. 2, the objects and lines, Sto., within ,the square'Gjb'eing :made to occupy a corre- 'spending positionin square M.
When all the objects, lines, 85e., in square Gr have been transferred to square M, a second square is taken in Fig. l, the transfer being effected in the same manner to the corresponding square in Fig. 2. This operation is continued until the whole map is transferred. v
I have shown vthe spaces in Fig. 2 onehalf'the size of those in Fig. l, which causes a reduction of the map one-half in the transfer. rIhese spaces may, however, be of the same size as those'in Fig. l when it is desired to reproducethe map, drawing, duc., of the same size as the original, or they may be increased or diminished to rsuch a size as toincrease or diminish the size of the original in the trans.-
fer to any desired degree. The same mode of operation is employed in the transfer of engravings, drawings, (Src.
,The advantages possessed by my device are, that it can be used in connection with any atlas without the special printing of the lines, forming the spaces directly upon the maps, as above referred to. I't can be used for the transfer of drawings, engravings, te. In its use the map, drawing, 85o., is prevented from being soiled by the contact of the hands or person with it in the process ofthe transfer, and a cheap and useful article is produced for children or persons desiring to transfer maps, drawings, &c.
I am aware that inl transferring pictures fibrous and textile material made translucent'ha's been'beforc employed, and such I do not claim; but
Havingv thus described my invention and the merits it possesses, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
Asa new. article of manufacture, a plate or sheet,- A, of gelatine or similar transparent iiexible material, provided with lines B and C, crossingor intersecting each other and forming spaces, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof' I have signed my name to this specification inV the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOS.` F. HARRISON.
' Witnesses I y E. B. RoLLINs, M. L. P. YALE.
