I The invention relates to means for preventing the flooding ofbasements, cellars and analogous low places having connection with a sewerage system when there is an abnormal rise of water, or increase in the pressure from heavy rain, or a thaw in winter when the ground is covered with snow and ice.
The invention consists of a check adapted to be located in the length of the soil pipecon- '10 necting with the sewer and comprising a frame, or casing,"and a'fioat controlled valve which automatically closes upon an abnormal rise of water to prevent back flow and a flooding of the premises.
While the drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and changes in the minor de I in tails of construction maybe resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing 1 from the spirit thereof.
For a full understandingof the invention and'the merits thereof, reference is to be 2 had to the, following description and the drawing hereto attached, in which Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal sectional view illustrative of an embodiment of theinvention. l I H Figure 2 is a transverse.sectional'view .on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. 7 Z
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional viewon theline 3'3 of Figure 2. I J Figure 4 is a sectional view similar to Figure '1 illustrating a modification and the addition of adj unctive parts whereby to vent the attachment and to draw off water from v the house end of the sewer and'discharg'e the same into the sewer end whenthe valve is closed by an'abnormal rise ofwater. Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 4. v Figure 6- is-an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 66 of Figure 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawingby likereference characters. V7
Thenumeral 1 denotes the usual soil pipe which connects the premises to be drained with the sewer. In accordance with the present invention the check is located in; the length of the pipe 1 and comprises a frame creasing and afloat controlled valve. When the check is constructed 'to be installed in sewers in service the frame or casing is constructed substantially as shown to be clamped again'sta side'of the pipe 1, but when constructed to be applied to new sewers the frame or casing will be of such formation as to be set into the length of the soil pipe without necessitating thebreaking away or removalof the side portion of the pipe for the installation of'thecheck." I
V In the present instance the frame or casing comprises a body 2*and a cover 3 which is bolted or otherwise secured to the body to close the top thereof and admit of ready access thereto for any desired purpose. The
bottom of the body 2 is open to admit of communication being established between the sewer pipe 1 and the interior "of the frame or casing. Thelbottom edge of opposite end walls of the frame is depressed or curved to conform to the curvature of the sewer pipe 1 to fit the same closely. The bottom edge of the side walls of the frame is'bevelled for a like purpose, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2 of the drawing.
' Flanges 4 project outwardly from the end walls of the frame or casing and curve transversely to conform to the curvature of the pipe 1.. Cement 5 or other suitable material is interposed between the flanges 4 and the adjacent side of the pipe 1 to insure the formation of a tightjoint. Lugs 6 project laterally from the sides of the frame or casin and receive thev threaded ends of straps F which extend beneath the pipe and have nuts 8 threaded upon the projecting ends to clamp the frame to the top side'of the pipe'l.
A gate valve 9 is snugly fitted against the inner sidev of an end wall of the frame or casing and its'lowerf portion is curved to conform to the inner diameter of'the sewer pipe '1. GuideslO applied tothe innerside of the end wall engage verticaledge portions of the gate valve 9 andhold it in place and give direction thereto in its vertical movements.
A lever 11 pivotally mounted intermediate its normal conditions tending to create a backflow in the sewer and the flooding of the premises, the float 13 rises and the gate valve.
9 is lowered, thereby cutting off the fiowto the sewer and preventingback flow and a consequent flooding.
Lugs 1.4 1 project inwardly from the side walls of theframe orcasing and are formed with vertical openings to receive the guide members ofa substantiallyUYsh-aped hanger 15 upon which the lever .11 is pivotally mounted. Clampscrews16threaded into the lugs 14 secure theIU-shaped hanger 15 int-he required adjusted position. To install the form of check shown in the accompanying drawing in an existing sewer it is necessary to remove aportionfrom thetop side of the pipe 1 to accommodate the frame-creasing and the valve 9 and-float 13. When the device isproperly positioneditis-made secure by means of the straps 7, .lnstallationland adjustment of thegparts may be facilitated'by removing the cover' 3. After the parts have been;properly-adjusted andthe frame or casing made s'ecureithe cover .3-isireplaced. Ad-- justment'v-of the hanger 15 facilitates posi tioni ng of-the valveand floatto secure satisfactory results,
The numeral 17 dcnotes'a centrifugal pump which isarrangedxtoidraw water from the hou'seend of thesewer anddischarge .itlinto the sewer-end beyond the valve 9. Asuc tion pipe 18 isconnected with thecasing of the pump 17 :and a disch-arge p-ipe 19 connects the outlet of the pump 17 with the frame or casing 2 of the attachment. i-Ashortpipe or nipple '20 is fitted in an opening Lformed in-a sideofthelframe orcasingQ. "Thedischarge pipe 19 is connected to the nipple or pipe-20. V
A headQlisiformed at oneendofthe pipe cr;nipple:20and engages the inner side of the frame-or 'casing2. Arnut-l2'2 threaded upon the projecting end of the nipple or, pipe 20- serves to clamp :a wall of the casingf2 be tween it and the head-:21; as shown mostelearlyin Figure 6of thedrawings. Tlhe face of the head: 21 is-incl'ined. and .providesa seat for a valve 23 which-is \pivotedr at its upper end to tho head .21. 3Theiface0f theheadQl forming the .seat foiwthe valvel2'3 is inclined to insure a positive closing of the valve. A packing 24. is interposedbetweem the head 1 andthe wallofthecasingor frame 2 to insure .aclose joint and prevent anyleak,
1 Abrackete25 supports thepump 1 7 and is secured to the flange 4 at one end of the frame or casing 2. An upright 26 is secured at its lower end to the frame or casing 2 and receives an electric motor 27 which is connected by means of a shaft 28 to the rotor of the pump 17. The circuit supplying current to the motor 27 isadapted .tohe closedby means of a switch-29 which is operable tbymeans of the float 13 when the water rises in the sewer to a point to effect a closing of the valve 9. A vent 30is provided in the top or cover 3 and consists of a body having a passage formed therein, the lower end of the passage opening through aside of the body and adaptt ed to be closed when the said body is elevated to thelimit of itsupward movement.v .Acrod 31:forms connectingmeans between-the vent 30'and the movable member of the: switch- 29. An upright-32 attached "to'the top or'cover 3 supports theswitch 29.
WVhen thereis'an abnorm-alrise of water in the sewer and the'valve.91-is'closedthe premises are prevented from fioodinglbyreof water disc'harging into the house-end of the sewer:by means'of-the pump -17 which draws water from the house end of the sewer and discharges the same into theendportionrconnected with the sewereand beyond the valve 9. WVhen the water riseszthe float -13'also risesand liftingthe vent 30-,elosesthe switch 29 whereby'th'e motor.27lisenergized andlthe pump 17 operated. Thevent 30 provides an escape for air --when the water :risesiinxthe sewer. When the wateris at-itshighest vpoint thevalve 9 is closed .andithe-pump .17 operates to .drawthe water from-thehouseiside and discharge it into the sewersidesof the soil pipe therebypreventing flooding of the premises fromroo'f water/and other discharge into the sewer. Whenthe water subsides the float 13 descends and'permits of the ventlowering and'the circuitto the motorbeingcautomatically broken. The pump therefore "is automatic inaction, both in the. starting: and stopping. a
:Having thus described the invention, 1 claim 1. Aisewer cheek comprising a frame having oppositely disposed :flanges .to overlap the-sewergpipe and receive and confine ancementing material, zmeans 'ifor :securing the frame to'ithe sewer, and a float opelra'ted valve "mechanism within 5 the frame for 'preventing flooding.
' 2. A-sewer check comprising a fram'e, lugs projecting inwardly upon opposite sidewalls thereof, a substantially UQ'shaped hanger attachably connectedfwith -said lugs, a floatiop erated lever'mounted'upon the hanger, and agate v v havingeonneetionwith thesa d lever to be automatically Qperated'thereby.
