This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools adapted for use in the removing of sealing compound about the cell boxes of storage batteries.
Another object of the invention comprehends a heating element for the tool to facilitate melting of the sealing compound, whereby the cells, and especially the tops therefor, will notbe injured in the removing thereof.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of tool points of different shapes to which the heat is conveyed.
With the above and other objects in View,
the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved type of tool partly broken away to illustrate the construction thereof.
Figure 2 is a detail view taken through the connection of the heating element and tool point.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the typeof tool point disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing. Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view takenon line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figures 5, 7 and 9 are elevations of other forms and shapes of tool points, whereas Figures 6, 8 and 10 are elevations of Figures 5, 7 and 9 taken at right-angles thereto.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a barrel or tube having connection at one end with a handle member 11. A dual electric cord 12, having connection at its out ermost end with a plug 13, is adapted for con- ..nection at its opposite end with the handle member 11.
A heating coil 14, mounted within the tube 10, is eccentrically disposed within the tube 10 and insulated therefrom by lava or as: bestos, such as indicatedat 15. The space provided by the particular disposition of the heating coil 14 within the tube 10 permits the less abrupt in the formation of the point than .spective cells will not become burned,
return end 16 of the heating coil to be passed rearwardly within the tube 10 for connection with its component conducting wire housed within the cord 12 to complete the circuit. The outermost end of the tube 10 is exteriorly threaded, as at 17, for reception within the socket 18 of a tool head 19. The outer surface of the tool head 19 about the socket 18 is knurled, as at 20, to facilitate eaie in the application of the tool upon the tu e.
The form or type of tool, as disclosed in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, are curved, as indicated at 21, and which terminate to provide penetrating extremities 22. The
tool heads 23 and 24, as disclosed in Figures 5 and 9 of the drawing, are provided with oppositely tapered side wall portions to provide extremities similar to that of screw driver points. However, the tool head 24 is the tool head 23, whereby a longer point is provided.
Asmanifest from the illustration in Figures? and 8 of the drawing, the tool head 25 is curved, as at 26, and which terminates to provide a relatively flat point 27.
Itis'to be noted that the different forms of points may be eifectively employed in the removing of the battery sealing compound from different angles.
The invention will obviate the employment of blow torches and battery steamers, whereby the corners and cell partitions for the re- Warped, discolored, or otherwise damaged.
The invention is suceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A heating and cutting tool-comprising a handle member having a tube, a resistance coil arranged eccentrically with relation to the longitudinal axes of the handle and tube, a return wire for the coil passed through that portion of the handle and tube opposed to that of and without the coil, an insulating packing filling those portions of the handle and tube unfilled by and separating the coil and return Wire, and a tool head carried upon the outer end of the tube and in communication With the coil.
